👩🏻‍⚕️Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month! 👩🏼‍⚕️

This month is to celebrate all things veterinary nurse!

Nurses can often be overlooked and under appreciated, despite being a crucial part of the veterinary team.

If you didn't already know, we do many things!

From reception duties, triaging emergencies, admitting and discharging patients, venepuncture and IV catheterisation, monitoring anaesthesia, performing diagnostic tests, preparing medication and nursing clinics.

We can even perform minor surgery under Schedule 3 legislation! ✂️

Some nurses are practice managers, senior or head nurses or specialists.

Some go into educating the next generation of nurses and some go in to charity work or research.

We have a wide range of skills and make the days run smoothly!

🐏🐑The magnificent five 😲🙌

This North of England Mule, owned by one of our farmers, produced these five beautiful lambs!

Quintuplets are very rare in sheep. Commonly they have between 1 and 3 lambs!

So this is a real treat to see 😍

⚠️🐱 Mandatory Microchipping! 🐱⚠️

From June 10th this year it will be a legal requirement that all cats must be microchipped!

Cats must be chipped by the time they reach 20 weeks old.

Microchipping can be done in a consultation with the vet or nurse and can usually be done in a 15minute appointment.

If you are unsure if your cat is already chipped we can scan them at the practice.

Already microchipped cats details need to be up to date with current address and telephone numbers.

Stray cat 🐈‍⬛
We’ve had a male neutered black cat handed into the practice. He is chipped but it is not registered. Found in the Danes Crest area of Northallerton

Both mum and calf are doing well 😍❤️

This is a beautiful red heifer that got into a dangerous situation when it's mother's uterus twisted.

Our vet Hilary untwisted the uterus and delivered the calf safely. 🐄

Both are now happy and healthy 😊❤️

Let's talk testicles! 😁

Cryptorchid castrations 🤔

What is Cryptorchidism?
This is the medical term that refers to the failure of one or both testicles to descend into the sc***um.
The testicles usually descend by two months of age, some may occur later but usually no later than 6 months.

The testicle is usually retained in the abdomen or in the inguinal canal.
It is common for one testicle to be retained, and this is called unilateral cryptorchidism.

A complication of cryptorchidism can be spermatic cord torsion (twisting onto itself). This can cause sudden and severe abdominal pain and need emergency removal.

More frequently, a retained testicle will become cancerous, which is why we recommend neutering as soon as is possible.

Surgery for retained testicles is more complex than normal castrations and there may be multiple incision sites, depending on the location.

🤓 Common myths about Fleas! 🤓

❌ Indoor pets cannot get fleas

✅You can bring fleas into your home on your clothing, or via other people and animal visitors.

❌Houses with no carpet cannot become infested with fleas

✅Flea eggs, larvae and pupae can live in the cracks between hardwood, laminate and tile flooring or along baseboards.

❌If you see fleas (or ticks) on your pet, the flea product isn't working

✅Flea products kill fleas in hours, not minutes. You may see 'live' fleas for up to 24 hours after they have ingested the product. These may also be recently hatched fleas that still need to ingest it.

❌Treating only the pet that you have seen fleas on is enough

✅All pets in the household will need treating to effective deal with the infestation. Houses should also be treated with a flea spray.

If you are worried about fleas, ticks or any other parasites, speak to a member of the team today.

Vet Vicky's Labrador Callie has today been scanned in pup. It is 23 days from ovulation. In the video you can see the black circles of fluid, with the developing foetuses within. Did you know dogs are pregnant for 63 days from ovulation? The only way to find out when ovulation occurs is via a blood sample to measure the progesterone levels. Doing this helps to pinpoint the best time for mating.

Something to make you itch 😬 … Chorioptes Bovis mites found on heifer with itchy skin. They are surface mites of the skin, often found on horses and cattle, but also affect goats, sheep and rabbits. Common during the autumn and winter in housed animals, usually on the hind legs but also on the neck, head and tail head. It usually only causes mild hair loss but can cause irritation. Diagnosis is by examination under a microscope of skin scrapings because they cannot be seen by the naked eye. Treatment is then prescribed by a Veterinary Surgeon.

Veterinary surgeon Vicky recently had a well deserved holiday to France. Of course she couldn’t help herself and went to see some cows. These are vosgienne cows that come off the hills to return to the grazing nearer the farms for the winter.

This lamb was already trying to suckle after being born minutes. The yellow fluid on the lambs is called Meconium. Meconium is the earliest stool of a lamb resulting from defecation. Unlike later faeces, meconium is composed of materials ingested during the time the infant spends in the uterus: intestinal epithelial cells, lanugo, mucus, amniotic fluid, bile and water. It is produced when the lamb is stressed during the lambing process.

Perks of your owner being a Farm Vet. You receive the horn after a dehorning procedure. Horns are generally considered a safe treat but there are risks which include broken teeth or cuts if the horn splinters. Maybe one to avoid for heavy chewers. Also try to buy thick horns and always monitor when they have access to them.

Did you know once pregnant, female pigs, commonly called sows, carry a litter of around 10 piglets for approximately 114 days before giving birth?

Happy cat = Happy staff 🐱 Teddy was hospitalised a couple of weeks ago. He had an infection causing a high temperature and he was very lethargic, presenting collapsed. Blood tests revealed a nasty infection. He had intravenous fluids and antibiotics and responded very well. Video from when he was starting to feel a bit better and enjoyed a fuss.

We wanted to share this wonderful demonstration by Veterinary Surgeon Bea, on how to tablet your cat safely at home. - Press the tablet against the corner of the mouth - Introduce the tablet into the mouth with your thumb - Close the mouth and blow on it
