We love Thomas! He’s so kind and caring and use such positive reinforcement with your dog, rather than the intimidating correction techniques other trainers use. Thomas is a natural and easily builds trust with your pup. He gives you so much confidence by showing you how to instil good behaviour, obedience, and calmness. In general, though, Thomas is such a bubbly character, and he comes to your home to fit in with your schedule and you feel safe in his presence. 10/10 would recommend!

🐍 Its Adder season 🐍

So let’s talk facts about adders and what you should and shouldn’t do if your dog was to be bitten by an adder

Facts:

Adders are often seen early spring/summer time. They enjoy basking in sunny spots, often in heathland, woodland and moors.

Adders will only bite in self defence, and are otherwise not aggressive. They only use their venom as last resort.

Adders protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981; it is an offence to harm, injure or kill them.

They have a black/brown zigzag pattern down their back, so easily distinguished from a grass snake which is mostly brown with a yellow band of colour around its neck.

Here are a few tips that could help you in an emergency, should your pet be faced with an adder bite.

How to spot an adder bite on your pet:

The most common places to be bitten are lower limbs and the face. Quite often your pet may react and swell significantly, fairly quickly in the area it was bitten due to the allergic reaction to the venom.

You may also notice:

🔶Bleeding, oozing

🔶Visible wounds

🔶Howling and nervousness

🔶Bruising

🔶Lameness

🔶(If bitten on the face) they may start to have trouble breathing

Symptoms vary and they can be more severe.

If your pet has been bitten by an adder >

🔹Do:

Ring the vets immediately and get your dog down to the closest vets as soon as possible. (Drive to a vets, rather than walk the dog there)

Carry your dog if possible to prevent the venom circulating around the body quicker.

Keeping your dog as calm as possible can also help prevent the venom spreading as quickly.

(If access to water) bathe the area with cold water to prevent swelling

🔹Do not:

Apply pressure/bandage material or a tourniquet to the wound

Try any first aid yourself. This may cause more harm than good

Dogs who have suffered an adder bite require immediate treatment, and are usually given pain relief, intravenous fluids to support their circulation and tissue perfusion, medicines to reduce the body's reaction to the venom such as antihistamines, and other medicines as required. In some cases an antivenom is given.

Please call your local practice if you have seen that your dog has been bitten or you suspect that your dog might’ve. If you are not near your local vet at all however, it is sensible to seek emergency care at the most local practice to you at that time.

Looks like we will finally get some hotter weather but with that it may not be suitable to walk dogs either midday or at all.

If I do think any changes are required, I'll usually message the day before if I think any house sitting or earlier walks will be required.

What to do when hit by a sudden downpour? Hide in a perfect whole juat tge right size, leaving the rest of the party getting wet.

He wasn't happy that I took him out, but we did go and find a more suitable hiding spot for a little bit. 😀

Finally, the sun was shining this week and we had a lot of happy dogs. With lots of climbing and meeting calm dog meets and plenty of dog on dog play.

We had a nice Saturday morning work today. Not only do I get to see so many dogs but also other animals too.

I'm not sure what type of water animal this one is, but he looked very happy. :)

I'm pleased to say that after a lot of hard work from the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Sweetbriar Marshes is now open to people and dogs, yet another area to walk next to the Marriott's ways.

Where there's a lot of marshes , hedges and trees. Please note that this is also shared with cows who help to keep the area from over growing.

We have been asked to keep on the path and dogs on the lead.

I think the best entrance is from Sloughbottom Park, but I know they are planning on adding a car park.

Tom is a proverbial dog whisperer par excellence. I cannot recommend him highly enough. My Yorkie puppy, Tommy (both April 29, 2023), was very co-operative during Tom's sessions, while I learnt a great deal about dogs I didn't previously know! This has all been invaluable in understanding Tommy's behaviour, which has made training him a pleasure.

We received absolute top one to one practical training from Tom at our house, focusing on calming control and disengagement to prevent excessive barking. Very informative, positive, and loads of fun for both our dog Skye and us! Would highly recommend Tom to anyone.

Yay. The snowdrops are appearing, and daffodils are soon to come.

I'm even fortunate to be walking this afternoon in a t-shirt.

Please note that both plants are poisonous to dogs when digested but it isn't something dogs tend to do.
