A dog's paws are one of a limited amount of ways a dog expels their excess body heat. By walking them during the hottest parts of the days, especially on concrete or asphalt you run the risk of causing heat related health issues including heatstroke and in worst cases burnt pads.

Be vigilant and be careful. 🐕❤️🐕

Say hello to Coby, the 16 month old cocker spaniel! ❤️ This little cutie has been running rings around his owner for the last few months, pulling heavily on the lead, resource guarding and jumping up non-stop.

We covered a fair amount in our first 2 hour session working on the leash pulling and jumping up as this was the biggest concern for the owner. Due to Coby being allowed to get away with this behaviour for so long, progress was slow to begin with. However towards the end of our session we saw a noticeable change in his behaviour. He's not perfect yet but we could see him starting to make the decision to be the good boy he is! 🐕🐕❤️❤️

I had the pleasure of meeting her and the owner today to discuss training ideas and come up with a planned training schedule. We had a long chat and we have made a few decisions. As part of my training package she will receive a full written training plan asap customised to Ruby. 🤗

Belgian Malinois - So often you'll hear trainers and dog care professionals say via social media that these dogs are some of the worst as a domestic pet for families as they're hard to tame and hard to train.

I couldn't disagree more. Like all breeds it's about understanding their needs and what you can provide for them. All breeds need different homes and even within breeds you can find outliers such as an erratic English Bulldog or a lazy Border Collie.

The Belgian Malinois is a highly active breed that has been bred to work. Therefore anyone looking to adopt one should have an active lifestyle that can include a dog. Hiking, running and even some more sedated extreme sports are great for these dogs. They're highly trainable and loyal to a fault. Don't allow your view of this breed or any other to be tarnished without doing your own research into what each beautiful breed needs.

What does 'Socialising your dog' really mean?

The big mistake many owners make is assuming it means letting your dog off the lead and letting it run wild with other like minded dogs. Although this can be fun for them and it's enjoyable to watch, this is not socialising but instead playing.

To socialise a dog means to train your dog through calm interactions with both people and other dogs. This means meeting other dog walkers with a calm and controlled approach to a point where neither party reacts unpredictably. It's a good practice to get into and should be at the forefront of every owner's mind from day one of owning a dog.

Owners who make the mistake of thinking play is the same as socialisation will find their dogs will bounce on the lead more often than not when another dog comes into view. This could discourage other owners from allowing their dog near yours making it all the more difficult to properly socialise your dog.

Say hello to Lyca, a beautiful 11 month old Malinois! 😍 The owners were charged an extortionate £150.00 by a previous trainer to then be taught nothing during a 2 hour session. They took it upon themselves to research and train by themselves with amazing success.

They requested my help with reactivity towards strangers and other dogs. She is such a good girl and so well trained already that with a few weeks of training following advice given she will become the perfect companion. ❤️

Say a very big hello to Pickle! A beautiful black miniature Schnauzer who has a real grudge against household appliances such as hoovers & ironing boards. The lovely owners were amazing and Pickle made some great headway in our hour long session.

Hopefully with some passive training and some keen training from the owners, Pickle won't feel the need to wrestle for much longer. 😁

I went on a group walk with one of my clients yesterday in order to gauge how and why some of the dogs were so reactive. Asta (my dog) came along for the walk and I'm so proud of him for being a great little assistant as he helped manage the other dogs stress levels brilliantly.

I'm looking forward to my continuing work alongside the owners of the 4 dogs in the picture. 😍

Meet Jack, the 8 month old Yorkshire terrier! 😍 Due to unforeseen circumstances his lovely owners had to stop attending puppy classes and unfortunately this has caused Jack to become very nervous and slightly reactive.

I'm currently working on a custom plan that will work around his owners specific needs and with a bit of effort, care and attention, we can turn Jacks frown upside down. 🤗

For all those of you that have got beautiful dogs bred for winter, remember to stay aware of the temperature & how much your pups have had to drink that day.

Good rules to follow when walking any dog in this heat are as follows:

- Try to avoid the hottest part of the day (12 - 2pm) ⏰

- If you can't avoid the heat, try to find plenty of shade and bring along some drinking water. 🥣

- Be aware of the ground temperature, especially tarmac & concrete. Dogs expel heat through their paws so it's no good having the ground hotter than they are! 🌡️

- Where possible help your dog by brushing out their winter coat ready for summer. It may even be wise to visit a groomer and have their fur trimmed. ✂️

- If your dog does happen to overheat, DON'T feed them ice as this could be life threatening. Instead find somewhere shaded and cool to let them rest and get them hydrated. In worst cases visit a vet immediately. 🧊⛔

- Finally, know when to call it a day. Some dogs and breeds do better than others in warm weather. If your dog is panting heavily or becoming sluggish it's time to go home. 🏡

We all love our dogs and want the best for them, stay vigilant and aware of how your dog is coping this summer. 🌞

When adopting a dog from a shelter and the breed is not very clear to you or the shelter, you may find a wild mix of breeds in their heritage. Although DNA tests are proven not to be totally accurate for dogs for various reasons they can provide some insight into what you may be working with.

Many breeds have been bred for specific purposes in mind so have a natural instinct to behave in certain ways. So try to keep this in mind when adopting as you may find you're biting off more than you can chew.

Below are some examples provided to me by one of my clients who has DNA tested 3 out of her 4 dogs and the heritage they have is a strong mix of differing natural instincts & behaviours.

Say hello to these lovely two beautiful dogs! I was invited to come and work with their owners due to serious concerns about their highly reactive behaviour. They are not a fan of guests and can be very snappy out on walks.

I spent a couple of hours with these two and learnt all about them and studied their behaviour and have created a bespoke training plan for the owners to follow. I first demonstrated the power of my techniques to them and how and when to employ them for the best results with great success.

It was a very productive morning and I'm very much looking forward to seeing their progress next week in our next session. ❤️
