We love to celebrate the successes of all our team members and this time we are proud to include Donna, our wonderful cleaner, and her horse, Jemoon Musicman.

Against all odds, Donna has not only recovered from breast cancer but also a recent car accident and has gone on to win the British Dressage Novice 23 at Port Royal on a score of 66.25% AND won Dressage to Music (Tina turner - Simply the Best!) on a score of 70.55%. It was their first time out competing in 5 months so they have done so well to achieve this and Donna is hoping to qualify for this year’s Pet Plan Summer Semis.

It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions for Malton Equine client, Bella Sowray and the Laskill Grange team recently.

Our followers may remember the little filly foal, Hettie, born a few weeks ago. Sadly, soon after Hettie was born, she lost her Dam, Rosie, to colic which was very sudden and upsetting for everyone involved.

Thankfully, Julie Camacho Racing were able to loan Bella a foster mare, they have bonded successfully and Hettie continues to thrive.

Bella then had 2 horses placed at Witton Castle Point-to-Point. A win for Imperial Imp and 2nd for Manwell.

This really encapsulates the highs and lows of breeding and racing and the great team effort involved in caring for the horses.

At Malton Equine, we offer comprehensive investigations and treatments to address various causes of lameness and poor performance. Whether the lameness is obvious or subtly affecting your horse’s performance, our experienced veterinary team is dedicated to identifying the root cause.
Our approach to lameness investigations begins with discussing your horse’s history to gather crucial information about your horse’s condition. Then a detailed clinical examination and gait assessment are conducted, including careful observation, palpation, and manipulation of the musculoskeletal system to pinpoint areas of concern.
Gait assessment is an important aspect of lameness evaluation, encompassing observation of your horse at walk and trot in-hand, as well as lunging on both hard and soft surfaces. In some instances, we may recommend observing your horse’s gait while being ridden, as certain lameness issues become more apparent under saddle.
During our investigations, we may use more advanced techniques, such as nerve blocks, ultrasonography or radiographs.
Once we have a diagnosis, our team develops a treatment plan and this may involve medication, farriery adjustments, controlled exercise or, in some cases, surgical intervention. Collaborating closely with physiotherapists and chiropractors, we adopt a holistic approach to facilitate your horse’s recovery and ongoing management.
At Malton Equine, we are committed to delivering expert care, ensuring the optimal performance of your equine companion.

Rather than worming on a fixed schedule, we recommend a targeted approach based on Worm Egg Count results. A WEC assesses your horse's worm burden and helps determine if and when worming is necessary. We treat horses with a high worm burden while sparing those with low counts to prevent unnecessary medication and reduce the risk of resistance.

There are a few other strategies you can implement at home to help reduce the spread of parasites…

Rotate between different classes of wormers to target a variety of parasites and minimise the development of resistance. We can advise on the best rotation schedule for your horse.
Implement good pasture management practices to reduce the risk of parasite transmission. This includes regular poo picking, rotational grazing, and avoiding overstocking.
When introducing new horses, quarantine them until you have their WEC results and have wormed, if necessary. This will reduce the risk of parasite transmission between horses.
Keep an eye out for signs of parasitic infection, such as poor coat condition, weight loss, or changes in behaviour. Give us a call if you have any concerns.

Remember, effective parasite control is essential for your horse's health and well-being. Feel free to chat to us about a tailored worming strategy for your horse or pony - 01653 507311

If you’re expecting a new arrival soon then there are several important things to look out for in the first few hours of a newborn foal’s life to ensure a happy, healthy start.

🐴 Check if the foal is breathing normally and moving around. The foal should exhibit strong and steady breathing and should be able to stand and move around within the first few hours of birth.

🐴 Make sure the foal is able to nurse from the mare. Nursing within the first few hours is crucial for the foal to receive essential colostrum, which provides important antibodies and nutrients for the foal's immune system.

🐴 Check the umbilical cord stump for signs of bleeding or infection. The stump should be clean and dry. If there is excessive bleeding or signs of infection, give us a call.

🐴 The foal should pass meconium (the first faecal matter) within the first few hours of birth. If the foal does not pass meconium or shows signs of straining, contact us straight away.

🐴 Monitor the foal's body temperature and heart rate.
The typical temperature range should be between 37.2 to 38.3ºC
A normal heart rate for a newborn foal is typically between 80-100 beats per minute.

🐴 Allow the foal to bond with its mother and observe their interactions. A strong bond between the foal and the mare is important for the foal's emotional well-being.

🐴 Keep an eye on the foal's overall health and behaviour. Look out for any signs of distress, weakness, or abnormal behaviour and if you have any concerns at all please don’t hesitate to give us a call.
