It's tomato season!

🍅🍅🍅

Our tomatoes are finally coming in strong and available at our Saturday market (10am - 1pm). The freshest tomatoes you'll have in Oxford, they require a lot of care and work keeping them pruned to promote growth and prevent disease. Our regular volunteers learn this skilled task and make a huge difference keeping the growth under control.

We've got chilli peppers, sweetcorn, salad leaves, courgette, cucumbers, marrow, eggs, and sunflowers available tomorrow too - see you there!

Our new rain water storage tank farm taking shape!

Huge thanks to our volunteers last Saturday for clearing and leveling this plot. We'll have 15 tanks here, increasing our water storage by 7 and reducing our reliance on mains water to grow tasty, local veg!

If you're interested in volunteering with us we hold open sessions every Friday and Saturday from 10am until 1pm, where you can pop down and join in. For more information and to see what other volunteering opportunities we have: https://www.oxfordcityfarm.org.uk/volunteer

Once a week we run Cooking On A Budget; a small nurturing group learning to cook from scratch, spending time with each other and taking the food home to enjoy with their families.

Last week the participants made their own bread rolls from scratch and then put together these delicious looking hot dogs! Yum 😋

What is a city farm?

City farms are urban oases, bringing agriculture into the heart of our cities. From rooftop gardens to repurposed lots, these farms are transforming urban landscapes, one seed at a time. In the UK we have over 50 city farms!

Oxford City Farm is nestled away behind the Isis Care Home on Cornwallis Street (access to the farm is through their car park) on the site of a former school. The long tarmac strip running through our farm is testament to that and it serves as a great cycling track for children!

A farm in the heart of a city enables a connection with nature and food that urban dwellers may not otherwise have access to and which is so incredibly important.

If you haven't visited we're open every Friday and Saturday from 10am - 1pm and entrance is FREE, we'd love to see you!

Volunteering is a vital part of Oxford City Farm, not only do we run our open to all community gardening sessions on a Friday and Saturday (10am - 1pm weekly) but we also animal care volunteers, goat milking volunteers, cafe volunteers, school group volunteers, Little Wellies volunteers... the list goes on!

Not only do the volunteers help us but volunteering can make a big difference to the lives of those who volunteer here. One mum told us "My son, who is profoundly disabled, gets a chance to be with the animals which he loves and to be a part of something."

If you're interested in volunteering with us in any capacity you can learn a little more here: https://www.oxfordcityfarm.org.uk/volunteer or pop by one Friday or Saturday (between 10am-1pm) and have a chat with Ciddy, our volunteer coordinator.

So many of you ask us on Saturdays who it is that bakes our delicious cakes so we thought we'd give her a proper introduction - meet Sophia, our Kitchen Lead!

"Hello, I am Sophia and I am the Kitchen Lead at Oxford City Farm.

I've taught cooking for over 20 years, and there is nothing I like better than being in a room of people, from all walks of life, cooking together, then sharing their creations.

Food can be a cheerer, a leveler, a connector and a healer. If it is made with vegetables and fruit picked yards from the kitchen, as it frequently is here, it can also be extraordinarily delicious!"

Sophia runs various cooking activities throughout the week including a weekly session with the FarmAbility co-farmers as well as occasional workshops such as fermentation or pickling and she makes the delicious chutneys, jams and pickles we have for sale at our Saturday farm stall 😋.

We make a LOT of organic waste here on the farm, especially in the summer. But we need it to feed our compost!

We have to feed the soil to grow happy and healthy veg, which we do by adding lots of well rotted compost.

We make this by collecting all of the plant and animal scraps from around the farm as well as adding scraps from the Isis Care home and coffee grounds from Missing Bean Coffee (whose coffee we also sell on Saturdays!).

They all sound delicious, which one would you try first?!

It's courgette season!

Did you know that a courgette contains more potassium than a banana? They're also a great source of vitamins C, A and B6.

The name courgette comes from the French courge meaning gourd or marrow, and the name zucchini derives from the Italian meaning little marrow.

We've got plenty of courgettes and marrows for sale at our produce stall tomorrow! Every Saturday from 10am - 1pm the farm is open for visitors and we have our delicious freshly harvested veggies for sale along with eggs from our flock. Don't forget your shopping bags!

Our farm site is tucked away behind the Isis Care Home (The Orders of St John Care Trust) on Cornwallis Road and they are supplying us with their leftover veg scraps and food waste to feed our compost piles!

We love being able to build relationships within our community as well as being able to reuse what otherwise may well go to waste ♻

Huge thanks to for the donation of this amazing filter coffee machine! We'll be selling Missing Bean filter coffee at our Saturday market from now on! 🙏🏻☕

Missing Bean is also bringing their used coffee grounds to the farm. This reduces their waste and provides an amazing source of nitrogen to our compost which the bacteria and fungus will help us convert into tasty and healthy veg 😁

Coming up on last call for tomato plants, only 50p or whatever donation feels appropriate. We're also happy to donate to any community groups, schools, or individuals that would not otherwise have the opportunity, no questions asked.

End of July we'll be putting them into the compost to return them to the soil from whence they came!

You might think this is a lot of cardboard but it's really nothing at all when it comes to using it for no-dig growing! Your used cardboard (without shiny plastic coatings) helps us increase our vegetable growing space by letting us use the card card as a w**d suppressant, then applying thick compost on top tonolant immediately.
Please let your friends and businesses know they can drop off their cardboard with us and it will have a big impact! We'd also welcome anyone with a larger vehicle that would like to go around to local businesses that are happy to send on their cardboard 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🌱🌱🌱

Calling all cardboard! Do you know anyone with big pieces of used cardboard at home or work? We are happy to receive all cardboard (except the kind with the shiny plastic coating) here at the farm!
Cardboard is very useful as part of our no-dig approach to building new beds for growing vegetables. It acts as a w**d suppressant but breaks down easily with compost or wood chip on top. We need A LOT so please spread the word. You can drop it off Fridays and Saturdays during our open sessions or be in touch to arrange drop off another time. Thanks so much!
