Are you worried your fury friend might be struggling with arthritis?

Zoetis (the company that makes solensia and librela) are currently running a promotion which means you get your first month free!*

Arthritis is a condition that leads to pain and progressive degeneration of the joint. Signs can be as subtle as limping or slowing down on walks. If you are concerned please speak to one of our vets!

The promotion is running for the whole month of September💙

*Vet consultation will still be chargeable but the injection will be free of charge

Our lovely vet Kristi is ditching us to go adventuring in Oz. As much as I would like to keep her locked in our beer cellar forever (yes, there are still kegs in there), apparently this is frowned upon and I'm not allowed. So we are looking for another vet to join our growing gang.

Buzz (our lovely louise's little mischief) needed a double TPLO surgery! An amazing team called Surgeon On Site come into practice to do our TPLO surgery's so let's take a look at how Buzz's surgery day went and how his current recovery is going💙

Prior to the operation:
Buzz wasn't given any breakfast the morning of his operation due to him needing a general anaesthetic. He had access to water up to 2 hours prior to coming in to the practice, and was taken for a short walk to go to the toilet.

He was then settled in to a kennel while he waited for the surgeon to call him in. During this time he got lots and lots of cuddles from all our staff.

On to the operation:
Buzz had a double TPLO surgery which is needed when a pet has ruptures a cruciate ligament (or in his case, both of them!). The surgery to fix this is done by a specialised team called Surgeon on Site

HOME TIME!
Buzz went home the same day as the surgery, and he was very excited for lots more cuddles. He is on strict strict rest in the house for 6 weeks and isn't allowed unsupervised for these 6 weeks. It's going to be a long process for both Buzz and his family, but his mum's said he is getting on very well! He will gradually be able to increase his exercise under the supervision of his amazing vet mum, and surgeon on site. He'll have x-rays in a few weeks time to see how he is healing and we're all keeping our fingers crossed for the all clear🤞🏻

With the weather not being able to make up its mind, here are our top tips for keeping cool if we have any more hot days☀️

🪭 Keep the house cool with fans, pop a bowl of ice water in front of the fan to help circulate cool air. It's also good to keep blinds/curtains closed to keep the heat out.

🐾 Walk your dogs at the coolest part of the day. Provide mental stimulation in the hottest times rather than physical

🍦Make pet friendly frozen treats, ie dog friendly ice lollies or frozen licky mats.

❄️ Try a cooling mat, some pets love them and some won't go anywhere near them but it's worth a try!

💧Always provide cool, clean water

Senior Pets: How can we help💙

It's difficult watching our lovely pets get older. Maybe you've noticed they're seeming a bit more stiff when standing up or they've slowed down on their walks. Maybe you've seen an increase in them licking certain areas, which can sometimes signal pain. But did you know there's a number of things you can do to help them?

There's so many options from prescribing pain relief to anti inflammatories, or even monthly injections to help with arthritis. Supplements such as Nutramed are designed for ageing pets.

If you're worried about your senior pet getting that little bit slower please book an appointment with one of our lovely vets to see how we can help💙

To all our Love Street Family, far and wide, I want to say a heartfelt thankyou to you all for all the support, lovely cards and messages after the loss of my mum a few weeks ago. My mum Mary was an inspirational, strong woman who was our biggest supporter and a familiar face at the practice helping me to paint the walls and put up the signage! She was the OG independent woman who instilled in me the strength to push through adversity and I'm so proud that she was able to see our wee community practice grow and thrive over the last 8 years.

Family extends far and wide and I would like to say a special thankyou to my Love Street family of bad ass, strong women who have supported me and stepped in to maintain the practice in my absence. I'll be back from next week and look forward to seeing you all. Once I'm back and settled in, we will re-open our client registrations from the 1st of August.

Sending lots of love and light to you all. Kerry

Kennel Cough Vaccine, what you need to know!

Kennel cough is pretty badly named, dogs can catch kennel cough from pretty much anywhere. This includes dog daycares or even just walking your normal route. It's essentially caught from other dogs, so can be caught from anywhere with other dogs.

The vaccine is a live vaccine. This means some dogs can display symptoms of kennel cough after having the vaccination. It also means it might not be suitable if the dog will be around someone who is immunocompromised. If you have any concerns please have a chat with one of our vets

Coming up to holiday season, most kennels will normally want a leeway period of around 2-3 weeks before the dog boards with them. Always check with the kennels what their policy is.

It doesn't stop your dog getting kennel cough but it does lessen the symptoms if they were to get infected. Very similar to the human flu vaccine.

Please call us on 0141 889 3010 to get booked in💙

We've seen an increase in ticks at the moment, so what do you do if you find a tick on your pet🪳

If you can safely remove the tick yourself, please feel free to do so using a tick twister/remover. Ensure that you remove all the tick and the head doesn't remain. If you don't feel confident doing this because call the surgery and one of our nurses can help.

If you remove the tick yourself be aware they can be quite difficult to kill. You can squash them in a sealed bag. Alternatively, put it in a covered cup with spirit/alcohol

Ensure your pet is on prescription strength tick treatment, we personally use Simparica which will cause a tick to die and fall off within 48 hours of them attaching

The area that the tick has been removed from will likely be a little bit red but if you see any swelling or discharge please get in touch.

Lovely Oscar had been missing for just over a YEAR! The little monkey was luckily taken to a local vet's to be checked for a microchip and he was able to be reunited with his owner

Let's hope oscar doesn't decide to take another holiday but if he does, he has his trusty microchip💙

Mango had her laparoscopic spay last week. Let's take you through what an operation day would look like with Love Street vets💙

Prior to the operation:
Mango wasn't given any breakfast the morning of her spay (much to her disgust!) due to her having a general anaesthetic. She had access to water up to 2 hours prior to coming in to the practice, and was taken for a short walk to go to the toilet.

Mango had pre operative bloods which involved a little shaved patch on her neck where the bloods were taken from. These all came up clear so we got the go ahead for the spay.
She also has a shaved patch on her leg where we placed an IV line and a shaved belly

On to the operation:
Mango had a laparoscopic spay instead of a traditional midline spay. Laparoscopic spays are associated with a quicker healing process due to it being a smaller incision area. She's a very bouncy girl so this means the healing process will be much more relaxed.

After the operation:
She was monitored by our lovely team of nurses and entered the recovery process. She was placed in a secure kennel to monitor and given some gentle food when she'd woken up

Home time!
When our amazing team were happy with her recovery, it was time for her to head home. All neutering operations go home the same day they are admitted, so Mango headed home with her mum at 6pm. She went home with a little medical pet shirt to prevent her from getting to her surgical wound (we normally send home with a buster collar or a pet shirt) and some pain relief to start the next day.

Now it's time for rest:
Mango is on restricted exercise until she has been signed off by our team of nurses. This involves lead only walks, no playing with her golden retriever brother, and lots of mental stimulation instead of physical. She came back 2 days after her operation to see our lovely team and was given the all clear to go back to daily life 7 days after her spay

And lastly, i would like to thank the amazing team at Love Street Vets for looking after my little one💙

Due to recent tragic and sad events Kerry will be taking some time away from the practice.

As the clinical team will be reduced for a period of time, Kerry has taken the decision to pause new client registrations.
This will assist the team in continuing to provide quality services and treatment to our existing Love Street clients and patients.
Kerry is also very mindful of supporting her staff during her absence.

Your patience and understanding is very much appreciated and Kerry would like to thank all of our clients for their messages of support and condolences💙

Muzzles don't need to be scary!

Muzzles can be used for a number of different reasons, from stopping scavenging dogs eating all the things they shouldn't to bite control. But our perception of muzzles instantly makes a lot of people think the dog wearing it is bad, which isn't the case.

It can especially be scary for owners when we recommend muzzling their dogs in practice. However, we only do this for our safety and the dogs. A muzzle will not harm them, but it can protect our staff from a potential bite.

Please remember if we muzzle a dog, they are not a bad dog! They are very likely scared or nervous and we want to keep everyone safe🩵
