Antibiotic resistance is a global health issue, and we need your help to keep antibiotics working.
That is why we at St Peterโs Vets are taking part in the Antibiotic Amnesty 2023. Throughout November 2023 we are asking pet owners to return any unused or leftover antibiotic medications to us for safe disposal.
Please drop off any unused medications to your practice. You can hand them in to a vet, nurse or the reception team. This medication might be left-over from a recent prescription, antibiotics that you didnโt need or out-of-date medication.

Who remembers Alfie? The young toy poodle that was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia.
After his consultation with The Moores Orthopaedic Clinic Alfie went for an assessment at The Canine Fitness Centre with Leanne.
Alfie has been going weekly to see Leanne for combined physiotherapy and hydrotherapy sessions. This is to help improve his hip range of movement, hindlimb loading and muscle mass.
He has been having laser therapy and pulsed electromagnetic field therapy to ease off any compensatory niggles and to help promote joint health. After his treatment, he goes into the pool which he was a little unsure of at first, but now loves. Swimming is complimenting his land based exercises which he completes at home to improve muscle mass and joint range of motion.
Since coming to the centre he has improved his muscle mass by 2cm in his left hindlimb and gone from 9% weight bearing on the stance analyser to 18% (he should be 20%).
Alfie will continue his weekly sessions a little longer to see if he can get more improvement and support him as needed. The overall plan is to try and avoid the need for surgery (Total Hip Replacement) which at present is not needed as he is responding well to the physiotherapy and hydrotherapy.

Last week we posted about taking your dog for a scent walk, and we wanted to further highlight the power of a dogs nose! For dogs, smell is the most powerful of their senses, and their olfactory system is much more developed and complex than ours.
Depending on the breed of dog, their sense of smell is anywhere between 10,000-100,000 times better than ours, this is because they have up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their nose, compared to a mere 6 million in ours!
Next time your dog starts having a sniff on a walk, let them, and stop to have a think about all of the information they are gathering and processing.
