Do you know how to spot blue-green algae?

Exposure to blue-green algae can cause long-term health problems in pets and can even be fatal. By drinking from or swimming in contaminated water, pets are at a high risk of becoming seriously ill.

Over the summer, our vets see a lot of dogs who have issues because of grass seeds. It is important to contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has an injury caused by a grass seed.

If walking your dog in long grass or woodland areas, we recommend checking your dog over and brushing away any grass seeds after the walk is done. Pay particular attention to paws, ears, eyes, and armpits.

Do you have questions about neutering your cat? It's something we strongly advise as it has many benefits for them and helps to tackle the number of stray cats in the UK.

Female cats will benefit from reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy, certain health conditions and even certain types of cancer. For male cats, neutering reduces their urge to fight other males, lessening the chance of certain diseases, and it also means they are less likely to mark their territory around your home.

Male rabbit. Quite a large bunny and blue/grey in colour. He was found in the grounds of a local Potters Bar school. If anyone recognises the bunny please call us so we can reunite him with his owners.

It’s important to keep your pet hydrated all year round as it delivers lots of benefits to your pets health, but especially during the warmer months. Cats and dogs both sweat through their paw pads, so as they’ll do this more now it’s hot, they will need to be provided with more fresh water. 💧

Honey had her routine heart scan this week. This scan is to keep a check on her mitral value disease.
The mitral valve is one of four valves in the heart. When working correctly this valve should help blood to flow the correct way. Sometimes when mitral value disease occurs the valve is not functioning properly and some of the blood is slipping back into the left ventricle heart chamber. We like to keep a close watch on patients with heart conditions so we can spot any changes quickly.

Our vets work very closely with the amazing cardiologists at Virtual Veterinary Specialists (VVS) via video link to check heart function and give the best care.

We had a little hedgehog 🦔💗 handed in to us recently. Unfortunately she was caught up in some netting which resulted in her leg being swollen and injured. So our lovely vets performed a leg amputation. Her wound is healing so well and she is moving around with no trouble. ⭐️😁 Well done ‘Jessica’ 🥰

Brave and handsome Milo finished his first course of vaccines this week. 🎉

Puppies are recommended to have three vaccines. The first is at 8 weeks then four weeks later at 12 weeks for the second. The third vaccine is at 16 weeks and this insures full protection from a range of diseases including parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis and leptospirosis.

Each time we give a vaccine at 8,12 and 16 weeks the natural antibodies received from mum will start to reduce in the puppy’s body. The vaccines boost the antibodies again to form protection for the dog. 💗

💚 Head nurse Dita recently gave back to the community and headed out to a primary school. She showed some of the children what it would be like to be a vet or vet nurse. She taught the students how use surgical tools, bandage legs, and dress in surgical gowns. It was a fun day and the children loved it. 🥰
Hopefully she inspired the next generation of vets or nurses. 💚

⚠️ microchipping for cats is being made compulsory from the 10th June 2024.

🩷 Mushu here is microchipped and his details are all up to date. Which means if he goes missing he can be returned home quickly and without stress.

🐱 Not sure if your cat has a microchip we can scan them in practice to find out.

Bones came in for his first puppy check and was given a clean bill of health by vet Vicky.

It’s always a good idea to bring puppies into the vets. We can give them lots of fuss, a few treats and help them to feel comfortable for when they visit in future.

Pets can develop skin allergies at any age, so it's important to make sure you know the signs and symptoms. Dogs may start scratching excessively, whereas cats may start licking their belly, back, or behind their legs more than usual.

The most common skin allergy is called atopic dermatitis, and although it's a lifelong condition, it can be controlled and managed, meaning your pet can lead a normal and healthy life. Treatments may include medication, supplements, or even newer monoclonal antibody treatments.

The law is changing - from 10 June 2024, cats in England must be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they’re 20 weeks old. The penalty for not microchipping your cat could be a £500 fine. A microchipped cat has a much higher chance of being reunited - please microchip your cat. Dogs can pick up kennel cough multiple times throughout their lives, but in most cases, they can recover in a few weeks.

During this time, you should encourage your dog to rest and avoid collar and lead activity as it could put more strain on their respiratory system. You should talk to your vet if your dog’s cough persists, or if you notice any changes in behaviour such as a reduced appetite or less energy.

Is your rabbit protected against Myxomatosis? This highly infectious viral disease has a very high mortality rate and can leave your rabbit prone to other infections.

The best way to protect your rabbit is to vaccinate them, especially as there is no cure if your rabbit becomes infected. There's also ways to reduce the risk of your rabbit catching the virus.

Pets can develop allergies to certain plants, pollen, and insects. If you notice any hay-fever like symptoms, such as itchy, watery eyes or sneezing, contact your vet for advice. They can help you identify the causes and ease your pet’s symptoms.

How cute is little Lola? 🐰
She came in for her first health check and vaccination yesterday. She was an absolute superstar and such a good girl for the duration of her visit!

We love bunnies and enjoy seeing them in the practice.

Making sure your rabbit has the right diet will not only keep them healthy and full of the nutrients they need, but can also improve their dental health and regulate their digestive system.

Hay and grass should make up around 80% of your rabbit's diet, this can be fresh or dried grass, but they should have unlimited access to it. They can have a small amount of vegetables each day, around 15% of their diet. Rabbit-safe vegetables include broccoli, carrots, courgette and green beans.

The lovely Rocco came in last week for his neutering. Here he is after his op receiving lots of love and fuss! We think he was smiling for us 😁 Our nursing team spend a lot of time with patients as they wake up - making sure they are comfortable and reassured, as well as ensuring they recover fully from their procedure 🥰

We love bunnies here at Potters Bar! 🐰 Did you know, that one of the biggest problems bunnies face is gut stasis? It is particularly important to try and prevent this after an operation, so we always ensure that they get lots of nursing care and encouragement to eat on recovery. Little Mimo here came in for his castration last week. Here he is tucking into his meal with one of our nurses afterwards ❤️
