Do you have a thermometer for your horse? Just like checking the smoke detectors in your home, it's a good idea to check your thermometer every now and again to ensure it's working correctly and doesn't need new batteries, as you never know when you might need it.

Strangles is contagious and can infect horses, ponies and donkeys, regardless of age, health or breed. Symptoms will often include a high temperature, loss of appetite and low energy, leading to a lowered head/neck and difficulty breathing. If your horse, or another horse in your yard, is displaying these symptoms, keep it isolated and contact your vet right away. It is *very* important to stop the infection from spreading.

Today marks the start of Strangles Awareness Week. Stangles is the most commonly diagnosed infectious disease in horses. The bacteria Streptococcus Equi attacks the upper respiratory system, sometimes causing the lymph nodes to become so swollen that the horse struggles to breathe, giving it the name “Strangles”.

Reigate Vets offers PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy for treatment of joints, soft tissue injury and bursae. This involves taking a blood sample and processing it to increase the platelets/growth factors, which in turn boosts your horse’s natural ability to heal itself. The PRP therapy equipment is mobile, meaning Carlos can treat your horse in situ.

We’ve had unprecedented rainfall lately, don’t forget to dry your horse’s feet if necessary to prevent mud fever and skin irritation. Horses left on wet ground for long periods of time will have their white line softened and therefore foot abscesses are more common. 🌧🌧

Now that it’s winter and your horse is spending less time in the fields, it’s a good time to check their stable for any rotting wood and deteriorating plastic (exposing sharp edges or screws) and any other potential hazards which could cause your horse harm or injury.

In a horse's mouth are 3 saliva glands which help them chew their food and start the digestive process. The type of feed will affect how many jaw sweeps are necessary for mastication - an average horse might make 60,000 jaw sweeps a day while grazing! To learn more about preventing problems with your horse's teeth, check out the British Horse Society's "Dental Awareness Week" or book an appointment with Reigate Vets

Did you know that the average 500kg horse will take 40 minutes to eat 1kg of hay using 3,400 jaw sweeps? Horses masticate with a long jaw sweep when they eat fibrous feeds, such as hay, which is why horses continually out on pasture rarely develop sharp edges on their teeth.

Today marks the start of Dental Awareness Week with the British Horse Society - it's all about making owners aware of the subtle indicators for dental issues in horses, such as always chewing on the same side and gum inflammation. They stress the importance of having a vet check your horse's dental health every 6 - 12 months. Send a message to the team at Reigate Vets to book an appointment.

Bonfire night is here and, while it can be a time of celebration for humans, it's often a time of distress for animals. This is your friendly reminder to take precautions where possible to minimise the impact of fireworks on your horses, dogs and other pets. Sticking to your normal routine can help your horse feel less stressed, playing music can mask the loud bangs and leaving lights on can reduce the effects of flashing lights. Have a great night!
