Happy everyone. Here's just a few drawings from the portfolio.
I've been so fortunate to be asked to draw so many loved members of a family. It's always a real honour, a pleasure and a privilege.

Latest from the drawing side of life, introducing Daisy and Darcey, two working Cocker Spaniels.
Unfortunately, Daisy and Darcey are no longer with us, commissioned as two unique and personal drawings to create a long and lasting memory of beautiful and much loved family members.
I've drawn multiple dogs before, but never as two separate pictures. Drawn as always with Faber-Castell polychromos on Clairefontaine pastelmat.

First horse drawing of the year, the gorgeous ‘Lally’. Lally is the first horse I’ve ever drawn that has been on the television. Lally appeared in the BBC costume drama ‘The Paradise’ which was on our screens in 2012.
A beautiful horse with amazing colouring and the only horse I’ve drawn with a crown, swirl called a whorl in the fur on her neck.
Lally was well received by the client.
“Perfect Steve, the colour is spot on and you've even put in her little swirls that are unique to her, very happy”
It’s always such a great pleasure to be asked to draw much loved family pets, and its always brilliant when you see the response of the client at the reveal.

First drawing of 2024, Lola the beautiful black Labrador, a much loved and adored member of the family, commissioned as a suprise birthday present. I absolutely love her stance and expression.
Collected today by the client and it's always so rewarding to see the emotional response a drawing achieves.
Created as always with Faber-Castell polychromos on Clairefontaine anthracite pastel mat, with pan pastel for the neutral grey background. An amazing dog to draw and a brilliant challenge to capture the iridescent qualities of her black fur.

A look back at the horses I’ve drawn over the past few years, the first being the aptly named “Steve” back in April of 2019.
Each and every drawing has been a valued part of the process in the evolution of where I am now as an artist. I’ve developed new skills, explored new materials, new techniques and uncovered new colour combinations to expand and push the boundaries of my drawing. So I'm looking forward to seeing what 2024 brings.

Drawing two…. Is there anything better than drawing two horses?
Drawing three…… last commission of 2023 and what a way to close a great year.

Introducing, from left to right, Tino a warm blood thoroughbred, Blue and Fritz; both of whom are competition ponies, now retired and spending their retirement as much loved family pets. The drawing was a Christmas gift for the client’s mum who has spent most of her life around horses.
I probably spent a couple of hours initially trying to work out a composition that would celebrate each horse whilst also bringing harmony and cohesion to the drawing. It was a challenge to get three images from different angles and lighting conditions to sit together in unison. All three images were provided by the client.
Created as always with Faber Castell Polychromos on Claire Fontane pastel mat, with Pan Pastel for the neutral background.

Merry Christmas everyone, and here's the first of the Christmas commissions, curls, curls and more curls. Introducing 'Whiskey' the gorgeous Cocker Spaniel, I'm not quite sure of the breed but I think he's an American Cocker Spaniel.
Described as lively, energetic and a very bouncy one year old.
Trying to capture the texture and depth in his fur was a real challenge, but well worth all the effort and I enjoyed every minute of it, and who doesn't love drawing a Cocker Spaniel.
Created as always with Faber Castell Polychromos coloured pencils on Clairefontaine Pastel mat, with Pan Pastel for the neutral background. Image supplied by the client.

Introducing Tia the Staffordshire Terrier, who is sadly no longer with us. I had the pleasure of drawing her last November along with her daughter Bella.
It's always an honour to be commissioned to create a fitting and lasting memorial to a much loved family member.
Created as always on Clairefontaine pastelmat with FaberCastell polychromos and Pan Pastel.

Sneaky look at the next drawing, still a very long way to go.
Just adding the base colours and some finer details to the eye, I'll then start to build up the colour and texture layer by layer.
As always, drawn use FaberCastell polychromos on Clairefontaine pastelmat.

Second of the reveals, introducing Milly the Sprocker Spaniel, curls, curls and more curls. Such a beautiful looking dog and who doesn't like the challenge of drawing adorable Spaniel ears.
Drawn as always with FaberCastell polychromos pencils on Clairefontaine pastelmat, and pan pastels for the background fill.

First of the two reveals, Lebowski the beautiful 23 year old, who's stable name is 'Rotter'.
Originally from Australia, he was bred to be a polo pony but was apparently so naughty that nobody could make anything of him. The recipient of the portrait was working on the same ranch and decided to bring him to the UK at three years old with the aim of trying him as an event horse.
He retired from being an international event horse three years ago, quite an amazing character.
Created as always with FaberCastell polychromos on Clairefontaine anthracite pastelmat.

Cheeky little sneak preview of the next commission, hopefully I'll be able to have a big reveal soon.
It's always surprising to see colours appear as the light changes throughout the day.
Draw as always with the amazing FaberCastell polychromos coloured pencils on the equally amazing Clairefontaine pastelmat.

An emotional reveal yesterday of Max the Domestic Shorthair Cat.
A much loved family pet who sadly passed some time ago. It's always a special feeling and so rewarding when a portrait creates such an emotional response, it means 'I got it right' and that Max will be forever remembered.
