Two Horfield Tortoise have come in today with metabolic bone disease both have under shot jaw.
One has real bad long nails. And one has softshell

Reptiles are regularly portrayed in a negative light by the media which we need to do our best to change, Quite a few reptiles make excellent pets for committed and responsible keepers and pose less of a threat when compared to the more common domestic pets

If someone asks me, “What if your snake bites you?!?!” I reply with “What if your dog bites you?” and show them these photos.

Not impressed with this one ( don’t worry guys it’s not one of our animals we have adopted out thank God). I would like to remind people the infections Terrapins have on other reptiles and nature And people themselves. A sulcata is definitely not meant to be in or around a pond the things you see on the Internet sometimes just shock you

Update on the bearded dragon that came in on the 22nd of June 2024 with a very bad eye infection looking loads better £220 later and he’s nearly there!

Licking and kissing or not washing your hands after touching reptiles/ enclosures can cause infections. Remember always wash your hands ! Before touching another animal enclosure to stop the. Bad bacteria moving from one area to another.

A 50-year-old Red-eared slider came in yesterday 5/8/2024 unable to swim due to the last owner only keeping her in very shallow water.

The setup she was in:
4ft tank with no filter and no uv. Did have basking light and a heater and the water level was less than 1ft deep.

How long had it lived like this? Over 20 years. without a filter and 30years without correct water level.. In 50years its never had a uv light (only when in the garden here a there)

(The lady got her 50years ago from france when it was the size of a 50 pence piece)

You may think this good but it’s not what’s best for the animal.

Terrapins should have a uv and heated water and basking light and the minimum water level of 2ft to allow the animal to swim and build leg strength. This will help stop the animal getting overweight.

Owner’s comments : (the lady who brought her into the rescue)
If you can’t take her or if you feel you can’t cope, we will take her back home and wait until I move to Australia and have her put to sleep before I go. (This is not going to happen!!)

Our care plan:
1) We put the animal in a training tank to help the poor girl learn to swim we have got to start basically at the beginning.
2) Once she learns we will slowly deepen the water (slow process)
3) Once we are happy, we will introduce the animal into our big pond. (Where she will be with others)
Owner left sad but happy.

This morning 6/8/2024 The same lady came back asking if we could give her the animal back.
Knowing the story about lack of care given and the fact the animal is non-native we told the lady unfortunately we can’t give her back on is it’s not in the 'best interests' of the animal. And we can’t do that due to our licence.

Outcome
I understand giving up an animal is hard. But the welfare of all animals is our main aim, so the animal has been saved from been put to sleep and not going back to a setup unfit for the animal
Again, the lady left sad but understood this time the care we can offer is far better than she could do.
She left crying but did say thank you for all you do.

We have been asked to help raise money for Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. So we have agreed to Help The Gleaners Inn by taking some of our animals to their harry potter Themed family fun day.
