‼️CLIENT INFORMATION‼️

Rugby Polo Club has a single, isolated case of confirmed Strangles (Strep. equi) at Onley Grounds Equestrian Complex. The affected horse and all confirmed in contact horses are now isolated off the premises and are under veterinary supervision; further equines on site are being housed in paddocks away from the show centre and facilities.

With our effective biosecurity measures in place and the clinic being independent of Rugby Polo Club, we are confident that this poses no additional risk to clients and their horses visiting Towcester Equine Vets @ Onley.

If you would like more information on Strangles, please visit our website and have a look at the Strangles factsheet.

The stigma associated with Strangles in horses can make the diagnosis of this disease stressful & confusing for horse and yard owners alike. To help provide essential facts, the equine vets at Towcester and Onley have created this quick overview article.

🌟April Patient of the month🌟

Pearl was initially seen by our Onley ambulatory team for colic. He was diagnosed on re**al examination with a pelvic flexure impaction (large colon blockage) which is a common cause of low grade colic signs. He seemed to respond to treatment well, which involved a few repeat visits to put fluids into his stomach to soften the blockage (nasogastric intubation).

Sadly, he then represented a week later and was seen by our vet Gemma, who referred him to our Paulerspury clinic where further tests were taken. These included an abdominal scan of his tummy and a peritoneal tap where a sample of fluid is taken via a needle. Analysis of this fluid showed an increased white cell count (WCC) as well as a high total protein. He was therefore diagnosed with a peritonitis (inflammation of the peritoneum). He also spiked a temperature during his stay, which is a common clinical sign. Unfortunately this requires intensive treatment and usually the cause is not identified.

Pearl was an amazing inpatient and tolerated all of the treatment very well. This included injections of broad spectrum antibiotics and being starved, though he very much enjoyed his mashes once he was allowed to be refed!

He was discharged from the clinic a few days later with oral medications and has been looked after by his wonderful owners at home. Unfortunately, he coliced once more, where he was seen by vet Holly out of hours. His peritoneal fluid was analysed again and showed the WCC had actually reduced massively (from over 400 to 18!). The colic was treated as a separate issue and Pearl recovered really well. Since this, the WCC has further improved and Pearl has now been off medication for a couple of weeks and is doing really well.

Thank you so much to Pearls owners for letting us share his story 💙

𝑾𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒘𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝑨𝒔𝒉𝒍𝒆𝒚!

The team would like to wish Ashley all the best as he's sadly moving on from Towcester Equine Vets this month. Ashley has been one of our experienced veterinary surgeons based at the Onley clinic for the last 6 years. He will be missed by our team and many clients but we wish him every success in the next chapter of his career in beautiful Guernsey. I'm sure he will keep in touch and visit us in the near future...

Good luck Ashley & thank you from all your Towcester Vets family!
