We are extremely sad to announce the passing of Volunteer Bailiff and Blithfield stalwart John Meddings.
John had fished at Blithfield for many, many years with his father-in-law, his numerous friends and with his Godson Simon Sharratt and Simon's son Harry who John doted on. He was a man who was passionate about fly fishing and about Blithfield - he would always be willing to lend a helping hand or offer a word of advice. We send our deepest sympathies and most sincere condolences to John's wife Mary and to all of his family and many friends. John's funeral is on Thursday 2nd May at 10.30am at Fradley Crematorium and thereafter at the Foresters Arms, Yoxall.
We will miss him.

After months of having to keep quiet whilst research was carried out we can finally reveal some of the most exciting news about Blithfield for many years.

During a routine fishing trip last year an anomaly was picked up on a sonar fish finder attached to one of our boats. Further exploration into this anomaly revealed a large wreck near to the underwater cave on the North Lake. After extensive examination of local records the wreck was found to be that of the Lady Proofsail, a River Blythe fishing smack which sank in the Great Storm of 1923 and washed downstream. She lay covered in mud and silt until the recent influx of water is thought to have revealed her whereabouts.
Head Bailiff Ron Herbert, a qualified diving instructor, volunteered to dive down to the sunken vessel and then made subsequent dives with a photographer to verify the find.

The Lady Proofsail will remain in situ as she now provides a protective β€˜reef’ for the rare, freshwater Stiletto Eel and her exact location will remain a secret. #

When out walking your dogs in the countryside, please make sure you stick to the Countryside Code. Especially when walking through fields where sheep and other livestock run free to avoid attacks during lambing season. πŸ‘

Everyone at Blithfield Reservoir is deeply saddened today to hear the news that Ifor Jones has passed away. We know that many anglers will have known Ifor from their visits to Draycote, Thornton or Eyebrook or from seeing him at various events around the country. A great advocate for our sport, he will be missed by many and we send our sincere condolences to his wife, family and very many friends. Rest well Ifor. οΏΌ

This Friday & Saturday there will be an exhibition at Blithfield Sailing Club to mark the 70th Anniversary of the opening of Blithfield Reservoir. Although there will be no public access across the Dam (to Exhibition visitors) anglers can cross as usual to reach the Boat House. There will be a traffic cone placed at the start of the Dam which anglers will need to move to one side to allow their vehicle through and then back again before continuing across the Dam. Anglers are very welcome to visit the Exhibition within the Sailing Club if they would like to. 🐟
