🐕‍🦺 Caring for a blind dog presents unique challenges, but with a few adjustments, you can make their life safer and more interesting.

Remember, your dog’s blindness is a challenge that you can help them overcome. Dogs perceive the world primarily through their nose, then their eyes, and finally their ears—unlike us humans who rely mostly on our eyes.

Our pets are sensitive to our feelings and emotions. By staying positive and calm, we can create a harmonious environment that they will respond to. 🥰

Did you know? Glaucoma is an eye disease where the pressure increases inside the eye, because the fluid produced inside the eye cannot escape.

This pressure causes pain and blindness. Glaucoma also occurs in humans and other animals but it is generally worse in dogs. It is one of the most common causes of blindness in dogs. Some common symptoms of glaucoma in dogs include redness in the eye, cloudiness in the cornea, dilated pupils, and increased tear production. Caring for a dog with glaucoma involves several important considerations:

👉 Veterinary care: Seek help immediately if you suspect glaucoma.
👉 Medication: Follow your vet’s prescriptions to manage the condition.
👉 Monitoring: Regular check-ups are crucial to track and adjust treatment.
👉 Comfort: Keep your dog's environment calm and stress-free.
👉 Diet and Exercise: Maintain a healthy routine for overall well-being.
👉 Supportive care: Show your dog love and companionship to help them feel secure and cared for during this challenging time.

🤔 Did you know? Entropion is a condition that affects the eyelids of animals, causing them discomfort and potential eye damage.

Instead of lying flat against the eye surface, the edge of the lid rolls over, contacting the sensitive eye surface with the hairs of the skin. If left untreated, this can lead to irritation, redness, and even ulcers.

Entropion is commonly found in breeds like Bulldogs, Shar Peis, and Pugs, as well as cats. If your pet shows signs of discomfort, frequent eye rubbing, or recurring infections, it requires veterinary attention.

Did you know that abnormal eyelashes can cause discomfort and irritation? Canine ocular disease is often linked to the presence of these pesky lashes that rub against their delicate eyes. This condition can affect one or both eyes and is commonly seen in the early stages of a pup's life. Although cats are less commonly affected, it's essential to be aware of the signs.

Keep an eye out for these symptoms:

👁‍🗨 Increased blinking rate (blepharospasm)

👁‍🗨 Rubbing or holding the eye closed

👁‍🗨 General irritation and discomfort

👁‍🗨 Increased tear production (epiphora)

👁‍🗨 Red eyes (conjunctival hyperaemia)

👁‍🗨 Corneal ulcers

🐶 Meet Ellie, a beloved ageing rescue dog who faced the threat of going blind until she received the precious gift of sight through a complex eye surgery here at Eye Vet.

Ellie, the nine-year-old Leonberger, began having issues about 18 months ago when her owner noticed changes in her eyes' appearance and a gradual reduction in vision.

Led by our veterinary ophthalmologist, Iona Mathieson, the surgery restored Ellie's vision, bringing immense joy to her and her loving family.

Ellie’s owners are delighted both her eyes are now comfortable and visual. We're thrilled to know she’s playing with puppy Kashi, and it sounds like they are having a wonderful time together!

🚴‍♀️ Join us in supporting Kayleigh Dougherty, one of our amazing Registered Veterinary Nurses, as she gears up for a remarkable challenge for a cause close to her heart!

Kayleigh is temporarily swapping her theatre scrubs for cycling gear to participate in the sponsored charity event 'Ride It' for Crohn's & Colitis UK throughout this month.

Last year, she conquered 100km, exploring various pub destinations and coastal paths. This time, she's taking on cafes, churches, and the stunning coastal borders of Wales, overcoming last year's flood defence obstacles.

But Kayleigh's journey isn't just about the miles; it's about raising awareness and funds for Crohn’s and Colitis UK. With her partner's struggle and diagnosis journey as inspiration, Kayleigh aims to shed light on the challenges faced by more than 500,000 individuals in the UK living with these lifelong diseases.

Currently, Kayleigh has raised £82 towards her target of £150.00. Let's rally behind her and help her reach her goal! Every donation takes us one pedal closer to finding a cure.

👁️‍🗨️ For National Save Your Vision Month, today we're talking about how you can keep an eye out for cataracts in your pet.

Did you know? In dogs, cataracts are common. Although it might be difficult to identify the specific cause, cataracts that develop in eyes that do not show signs of other ocular diseases are assumed to be inherited.

There are many different causes of cataracts:

🔵 Injuries to the eye
🔵 Inflammation within the eye
🔵 Diseases of the body, such as diabetes mellitus

👁️ This Awareness Month, we want to share a heartwarming journey of resilience and hope and shed light on a pet hazard at home!

It all started when owner Amy Pinkster accidentally dropped a Yankee Candle jar, injuring her precious Pug, Winnie. 😢

Amy feared the worst when she noticed that one of the shards had seriously damaged Winnie's left eye. Panicked, she rushed her to a local vet, who referred her to our hospital.

Iona Mathieson, Advanced Practitioner in Veterinary Ophthalmology Director, took charge of the emergency case and performed a full surgical repair on Winnie's eye.

The team closely monitored Winnie's recovery and breathed a sigh of relief when they realised she still had full vision in her left eye. 🙌

👁️ It's awareness month!

Today, we're shining a spotlight on a topic that often gets overlooked: routine eye exams for our pets.

While regular visits to the vet are essential for vaccinations and overall health check-ups, let's not forget about the importance of caring for their precious eyesight.

Just like us, pets can experience a range of eye problems, from infections to cataracts and beyond. That's why routine eye exams conducted by a trained veterinary ophthalmologist are so important. Not only do they help maintain good eye health, but they also play a big role in early detection and prevention of various eye conditions.

Keep an eye out for signs that may indicate vision problems in your pet, such as cloudiness, excessive tearing, or changes in behaviour. If you notice anything concerning, please reach out to your vet.

🐾 Happy National Walk Your Dog Day! 🐾

Today, we celebrate the joy of walking our dogs, but let's not forget about our visually impaired canine companions. Here are some tips for walking a visually impaired dog:

1️⃣ Use Verbal Cues: Communicate with your dog using clear and consistent verbal cues. They rely heavily on your voice and guidance.

2️⃣ Short Leash and Gentle Guidance: Keep your dog on a short leash to maintain control and provide gentle guidance. This helps them navigate their surroundings better.

3️⃣ Obstacle Awareness: Be mindful of potential obstacles such as curbs, steps, and uneven terrain. Alert your dog and guide them accordingly.

4️⃣ Scent and Sound: Visually impaired dogs often rely on their sense of smell and hearing. Let them explore and sniff their surroundings while staying vigilant for potential hazards.

5️⃣ Patience and Encouragement: Walk at a comfortable pace and offer reassuring words to keep your dog calm and confident during the walk.

Remember, walking with a visually impaired dog requires patience and understanding. Show them love and support, and enjoy the special bond you share with your dog.

21/02/2024

Lens luxation is a serious and painful condition that requires prompt intervention. Our team of highly skilled veterinary ophthalmologists utilises specialised equipment and techniques to ensure the best possible outcome,

Depending on the severity and underlying cause of the luxation, our treatment approach may include:

💉 Surgical Removal: Under general anaesthesia, our experts delicately remove the luxated lens through a precise incision at the edge of the cornea. Highly specialised microsurgical instruments and an operating microscope ensure optimal precision.

💧 Preventative Measures: In cases where lens luxation is hereditary, we may recommend the removal of the lens in the unaffected eye to prevent future complications. Alternatively, we may prescribe eye drops that constrict the pupil to help prevent the lens from luxating.

💊 Medical Management: For less severe cases or when surgery is not possible, we provide pain relief and anti-glaucoma treatment to minimise further damage to the eye. This includes medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs and eye drops.

After treatment, we provide comprehensive post-operative care and regular re-examinations to ensure the best possible recovery. Our team is dedicated to preserving a pet's vision and overall eye health.
