Along with recall and leave, I think having your dog waiting by a door and not leaving until being told, is up there with the really important behaviours. Making sure your dog knows that an open door isn’t an open invitation to go could one day save their life, especially if you live in a busy built up area. My yellow boy demonstrating it perfectly 🫶🏼.
What’s the one thing to remember in dog training?
That no one is perfect.
When you’re on your training journey, it can be so easy to compare yourself to others and other people you see on your walk with their seamlessly ‘perfect’ dog.
But remember, everyone starts somewhere and starting is better than not starting at all.
Happy Sunday 🫶🏼

Being able to understand and read your dog’s subtle body language signals is vital in dog ownership.
Unfortunately dogs can’t talk to us (but imagine if they could?!) so it’s down to us to be able to look out for them and notice when they’re in an uncomfortable situation and advocate for them.
In this video, Fletch notices a dog in the distance (his trigger) and you can see the subtle changes in his body language once he’s spotted it. The dog in question was a fair distance away from us but even so, Fletch had noticed it and started to focus on it.
Body language is covered in my puppy course because I believe it’s imperative owners understand the signals of an unhappy dog and know when to remove them from that situation.

The main focus of our Adolescent Classes is just that, focus. Being able to focus around other dogs which is the biggest distraction for dogs this age.
With the added help of Bailey, the adolescent class dogs were able to build on their static behaviours like sit and still respond to their owners amazingly.
If you think your dog needs a little bit of help working on their focus, get in touch to book your space on the next class in January.

A little snippet of some of the behaviours taught in our puppy class. We cover all behaviours from recall to ‘touch’, mental enrichment and settle behaviours.
Our classes are made to build a puppy’s confidence but also handler confidence. It’s amazing how much the owners learn and take on and how much their confidence grows knowing they are doing right by their dog.
Our next set of classes are starting soon and there’s a few spaces left.

Millie is 9 today 💗My heart and soul dog 💫 Keep being the happy and funny little girl you are and greeting me with tea towels forever 🥹
Everyone should be as chilled as Spencer is in this video on a Sunday 😴
One thing in the puppy classes we cover is being handled. This means getting the puppies used to being handled and touched in places like their feet, looking in their ears and their mouth etc.
The importance behind it is preparing them for vet visits and groomers. However there is an even more important reason behind it. Whilst doing this type of training and desensitisation, it’s a good opportunity for owners to check their dogs for any unusual lumps and bumps they may have.

This is your Sunday reminder as we go into a new week with new goals, new targets, to not stress over your dogs training. Training takes time and A LOT of it. There is no quick fix, no easy solution, no piece of equipment that will give you an ‘instant’ fix. You have to dedicate yourself to it. I’m starting to see results and improvement with Fletch and that has come after weeks and months of working with him. There’s still areas he needs to improve on and he’s by no means finished with his training. But it is such a good feeling to finally see your hard work pay off. Keep going, your future self will thank you🫶🏼
Playing games with your dog is an important part of training. It helps build on your relationship with your dog and their engagement with you. But breed specific games are even more important.
Labradors are bred to retrieve items, mainly birds, so incorporating these games into Fletch’s life are good for him to express these natural behaviours.
Working on retrieve training is something I want to try and really work on with Fletch because I can see he enjoys doing this so much and seeing him use his nose, use his eyes to find the item and bring it back to me, is fun for me to watch too.
Letting our dogs express their natural behaviours and giving them breed specific outlets is such an important part of dog ownership. It can decrease unwanted behaviours and overall create a calmer and happier dog.

Casper, the very lively, the very energetic and also slightly nervous German Shepherd.
His owner was struggling with his reactivity towards cars, bikes, people and dogs. German Shepherds are known for their reactivity towards vehicles due to their genetics of wanting to herd moving objects (hence the name ‘herd’). So it was all about teaching Casper that vehicles are ok and nothing to worry about.
We also worked on his calm behaviours in general and over the course of the 4 sessions, I could see such an improvement in him by the last due to his owners time and dedication.
Some dogs just need a little time to adjust to things and it’s important to remember, that that’s absolutely ok🫶🏼

Dogs of all shapes and sizes are welcome in our classes🐾
Here’s Jam, our smallest pup to date 🥰
A slow Sunday stroll this morning🌿🌞
In weather like this, it’s important to remember that dogs don’t need their usual walks. A quick sniff and enough to do their toilet business and their fine. Or even not walking them at all and switching it up with some mental enrichment games or training.
Whatever you decide to do, make sure your dogs are kept cool.

Our Adolescent Classes focus on the key behaviours all dogs need to know but also the most common owners struggle with through this period in their dogs life.
The adolescent classes are all about teaching your dog to work around other dogs and distractions. During this phase of a dogs life, the world around them becomes 10x more exciting making it a little more difficult to focus.
If you feel like your dogs training has gone backwards and you need a little boost, book onto our next course.

Sitting by the river watching the world go by with Bailey🌿
Doing this for just 15 mins a day with your dog can vastly improve their reactivity and general calmness outdoors.
In the rush of and (sometimes) stress of training your dog, don’t forget to enjoy the little moments with them.
Sitting by the river enjoying the sunset with Millie is one of my favourite little moments 🫶🏼

A few weeks ago (I’ve been rubbish with updating social media!) I had the pleasure of 4x 1-1’s with Maki and her owners.
They’re new dogs owners and wanted to get off on the right foot so we covered all the essentials when it comes to setting your dog up for success.
This is our last session where we started on Maki’s socialisation and just generally getting her used to the hustle and bustle of towns and the noises that come with them.
Seeing how dedicated and committed Maki’s owners are, I know that she will grow into the happy and confident dog she can be.
