To say I'm pleased with how it's going would be an understatement π₯³
I got a rubbish camera angle but she's really driving into the behaviour, I added movement to test and encourage that drive, I want her to really push into it. Well done Nutmeg π₯³
When your dog is motivated teaching new behaviour is simple and really fun, it's getting that motivation that is crucial x

So full transparency, I have had a day. My 1 year old wouldn't nap at all today so was throughly miserable all day π₯² he's been hot, it's been tough. Nutmeg has been pretty much ignored all day, she went for a pack walk this morning but that's pretty much been it π€¦ββοΈ
I was not mentally in a place to do a training session for her dinner, which is fine. A simple scatter feed in the garden engages her brain, gets her using her nose and is low effort for me! It's really a win all round, I will always encourage a 10 min training session as the best for of enrichment but sometimes that ain't happening and that's okay β€οΈ

Front position pt2 π
Pleased with our second session, really focusing on her driving into my space, I am building a behaviour here so just make small progress each session, today I took the first steps towards fading the lure by removing the food π stay tuned for our progress....

Taking inspo from one of my fave accounts @halen_thesableshepherd and working on Nutmegs front position, I've always loved how close and clean Julia and Halens front position is so hoping to get the same with Nutmeg, I'm doing a little series so stay tuned for our progress πͺ

So bare with me here, there are better and worse ones but doggy day cares cause huge amounts of behavioural issues.
Generally they are put in the same boring field with loads of other dogs who they don't know, the environment is so unstimulating that all they have to do is play with each other, this places huge value in playing with other dogs, causes frustration when dogs don't want to play and means that when they do go for a proper walk in the countryside they are so overwhelmed by the environment that recall is compromised π€¦ββοΈ
You are so much better off finding a decent dog walker who will focus on training, exposure and fulfilment. Often they will walk your dogs in groups so they can still be social but focus more on being neutral to each other. They will strive to IMPROVE your dogs behaviour. Your dog doesn't need to be in a field playing with other dogs for 5 hours, they just don't.
I've seen and trained so many dogs now who quite frankly have been damaged by there experience at doggy day cares. Dogs are always sent by owners who think they are doing the right thing but it causes so many problems...
A local one to me even dresses dogs up at Halloween, is this really being done to make the dogs happy?

Working on Lolas off lead skills π
Off Lead skills is so much more than having recall, it's a multi layered skill, coming when called is important but so is checking in and coming back when something novel appears (think dogs, people, horses etc etc). When you are in the learning stages of this behaviour you need to find what your dog finds reinforcing and pay them when they do these behaviours. I'm obsessed with dogs having off lead freedom but it's not a skill that you should rush in teaching. Lay the proper foundations, stop your dog rehursing what you don't want (longline/flexi) and reinforce, reinforce, reinforce β€οΈ it's about progress not perfection...

Dogs and babies πΆπ€°πΆ
It's the absolute dream right? In lots if ways yes, it is a beautiful time IF and only if managed correctly. Before having my baby I didn't see the need for complete separation, I thought I could handle it through good obedience (place que) and training. Oh how wrong was I and the reason I was wrong wasnt because of my training needing improving it was because of my baby. Babies are relentless when they want something and what he wants was to grab, climb on, bite Nutmeg - I can assure you that it didn't happen. However, it was easy to see how situations can escalate into something nasty, even if it doesnt go this far its hella stressful. You can't have eyes in the back of your head. This step is necessary, and quite frankly more calm for everybody. Yes Nutmeg is a staffy, no she is not a nanny dog.
Separation is essential sometimes β€οΈ as always if you need help doing this drop me a message βοΈ

What should you look for in a dog walker?
Well it's a good question, imo you should be looking for someone who:
β’ Gets to know your dog personality and match with compatible dogs
β’ Focusing on improving your dog's behaviour especially recall and LLW walking around other dogs
β’ Goes to different enriching places for your dog to explore whilst behaving neutrally around other dogs
β’ Someone who understands dogs body language
I'm sure there's many points I've missed out but this is the crux of it, you want someone who is going to improve your dog's behaviour and match your values as an owner. I've seen too many dog walkers with out of control dogs, having no concern for the behaviour displayed amongst the pack they are walking π
I have currently got a few spaces throughout the week for walk and trains, if you'd like to see if this service is for you, please drop me a message ππ

What I've told every recall client to date, try talking to your dog less. If you are constantly talking to your dog they start to tune you out and focus on the environment whilst they can hear you in the background, and that's just it you BECOME the background.
Having clear ques and a cleat reward system is they way to improve your dog's recall π₯³
