Having been involved with horses and ponies my whole life, as a hobby and for work, has given me a great amount of experience not only within the industry itself but being exposed to the varying temperaments that horses and ponies present to us. Racing, my main passion, has led me all over the country, even across the pond working with top Thoroughbreds. I have worked for a variety of trainers inc

luding Ben Pauling, Sophie Leech, Jimmy Frost, Adrian Wintle, Paddy and Leslie Young over in Pennsylvania. Previous and alongside this I completed an Honours Degree in Equine Management at The Royal Agricultural College exposing me to the various aspects of the equine industry. Dentistry has always been an interest of mine and after spending time with Keith Evans, I was fortunate enough to secure a 3 year apprenticeship with. Starting off in Idaho in America where I gained a very sound platform of knowledge and practical skills to build upon which I now have having qualified with the British Association of Equine Dental Technicians in 2019. Over the last 5 years I have continued to build a client base all over the south west and even further a field. I continue to work along side Keith treating horses and ponies that compete in a variety of disciplines from driving to top eventers...
Being a member of the BAEDT ensures that my work is of the highest standard with regular CPD days and updates as well as having work assessed by examiners. Ian Hargreaves Equine Dentistry is proud to be sponsoring 3 local event riders as well as Home Farm shows which throughout the summer organise a variety of different classes from showing to showjumping..

Had my first visit to Chard Equestrian last week to do a dental demo/talk, thanks to my client Gina Sampson for organising, always love trying to raise more awareness of all things teeth!👌🏼🐴🦷

Today all of the ponies had their annual visit from the dentist 🦷

We had the fab Ian Hargreaves Equine Dentistry visit to give the ponies their annual check-up! 😀

Straight back to it 🦷🐴 working with Tor Equine Veterinary Practice today, an informative write up and kind words from Richard, always nice to have a good team of vets in the area, who as EDT’s we can always count on. Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and happy new year!

Richard had the pleasure of working with Ian Hargreaves BAEDT today on a very special horse. Dennis actually belonged to Ian many years ago during which time he had to have cheek tooth 307 (second tooth on the lower left hand side) extracted.
Dennis is now owned by the ever doting Hannah but Ian still checks his mouth every 6 months. Over time Ian had monitored a very slow mesial drift (migration) of the teeth which had caused the original extraction site to partially close.
Unfortunately this was starting to form a valve diastema (where the gap is narrower at the top than the bottom) which was causing food to get trapped between the teeth.
Once Dennis had been sedated Ian picked and flushed the food material from the site before Richard carefully widened the diastema using a special burr.
This process might sound counterintuitive but what it does is to allow any food that enters the diastema to come away more easily. Food that gets trapped starts to rot and causes inflammation in the gums and the ligaments that hold the teeth in place. Fortunately for Dennis, Ian’s vigilance and prompt referral to Richard meant that this painful outcome has been avoided.
We’re really lucky to have EDT’s as professional as Ian working in the area and it’s always a pleasure to work with them.

Make sure you have your horse’s teeth checked at least once a year, preferably twice. Prevention of problems is always easier and cheaper than than cure.

It’s been a busy 12 months, a trip to Wales, Dental conference in Doncaster, riding schools, livery yards, private yards and everything in between! 🐴🦷 On the wind down to Christmas now ready to enjoy some family time and much needed rest! 🎄🎄🎄 Thankyou to everyone that’s let me treat their horse/pony in the last year and I look forward to seeing you again in 2023! 🥰🐴🐴

🐎💥💥💥…BIT PINCHING…💥💥💥🐎

With bits and bitting already a minefield within the equine world especially with the amount of them out there.. I’m definitely no expert when it comes to what bit to use but i can see whether the bit used is causing soft tissue trauma. This is something I see a lot of on a daily basis. As seen in the picture below two pinch marks.. combine this with a sensitive horse/pony can cause discomfort in contact.

So this is where, on the hinge part of the bit, soft tissue can get caught/trapped and when pressure is taken on the reins causes pinching. As seen in these pictures most of the bits have space around the hinge part. The solution.. bit guards.. however I always recommend the Acavallo ones as these eliminate the chances of pinching.
All of this would be picked up in a simple routine visit 😊
