Our third, and sadly final update on Ragetti. We regret to inform you that sadly Ragetti has not survived his ordeal and treatment, despite fighting hard against the odds. His initial recovery to his enucleation procedure went as well as could be expected, and we were happy with his state for the first 24 hours. Sadly, over the next couple of days, he slowly deteriorated. He became unable to control his own temperature and he refused to eat. A feeding tube was placed to provide assisted feeding, but even with this his glucose levels would not maintain, and his energy levels kept dropping. He no longer became respondent to our strokes and cuddles, whereas before he was always seeking out attention in the form of face rubs. The decision was made by a collective of our vets who felt that he was now suffering, and the odds of recovery were impossible. He was helped to sleep by ourselves, having known love and care and affection for the last week of his life. The removed eye came back as a highly malignant cancer, with a chance of having already infiltrated further into his body. This means that he had been left in this condition for quite some time by whoever had been caring for him/abandoned him. We are very grateful to the person who found him for bringing him in for treatment, to the RSPCA Southend branch for funding his treatment and giving him the only shot he had at life. To all the members of the public who have donated to his appeal or to the RSPCA Southend Just Giving page, you also have our gratitude. These donations ensure the animals of Southend and the surrounding areas who either have been abandoned by their owner or have no owner to call their own get the treatment they need and hopefully find a new home of their own.

Sadly Ragetti’s case did not have the outcome we were all hoping for. However, his case has proved to ourselves and the RSPCA that there are many caring people out there willing to offer the funds and homes needed to save more lives in the future. An update on our stray:
Ragetti (named after the one eyed pirate in POTC), has had his enucleation surgery today. He is still in recovery, and we imagine this will take quite a bit longer than usual due to his poor state. It is fantastic that he has survived the surgery and the initial recovery stage, and for now we will be taking it day by day with him. He is not out of the woods yet sadly. He so far has eaten since waking up and has returned to normal temperature but is very subdued in himself. His operation went well, but unfortunately the eye does look cancerous. It has been sent to our laboratory to confirm. Our other concerns are with a hard lump on his neck (tests came back as inflammation but we cannot guarantee there isn’t cancer there too), his emaciated state and the fact he is also severely anaemic. All of these issues are going to make his recovery harder and longer but please be reassured we are taking good care of him. All of his treatment has been funded by our amazing Southend RSPCA branch (who are seperate from the headquarters and do not receive funding from them) so absolutely every penny donated towards his bill helps them out.
Many people offered to help out with his care, with some also offering a loving home on recovery. The RSPCA will be advertising him when he is fit to be homed so please keep watching out for him.

Neutered male, senior at found Hillside Road, Eastwood. He has quite a bad eye injury and we need any owner to come forward ASAP please. He has no collar or microchip so any owner will need to provide proof of ownership. Please call us on 01702 322222 if he is yours or have any information about him.

Edited to add - there has been a lot of concern for this little chap which is lovely. We would like to reassure everyone that he is under the care of the RSPCA and receiving appropriate treatment. His case is unfortunately not black and white, although the eye is the obvious concern, there are a multitude of issues with this boy that need addressing which are not obvious from the picture. Further testing has been done and we are awaiting results before any plans are made. For now he is comfortable on medications and receiving lots of love and food.
It’s been extremely disappointing to read through the negative messages directed towards us this morning assuming the worst of us. Our team will try and not let it affect us too much. We love animals and will try our hardest to help all that walk through the door. However the positive spin on that is that so many people are willing to find help and offer a home, which we know the RSPCA will be greatly appreciative of. All charities are currently struggling for funding and rescue space and so every little bit of help offered will help provide more treatment to save lives in the future.

National Hairball Awareness Day
Today is National Hairball Awareness Day! Many of our feline friends will bring up a cat hairball (fur ball) at some stage in their lives.
The odd hairball is to be expected, especially during moulting season in long-furred felines. However, hairballs can sometimes indicate an underlying issue and are something we should be paying attention to.
