Really interesting article. In South Africa Vets and Physios are already aligned. This is not only better for the patients, it gives owners piece of mind and gives proper oversight and regulation to the industry. Sadly in the UK virtually anyone can call themselves an animal physio, which puts animals at risk and drains owner resources...

Allowing dedicated veterinary physiotherapists to execute equine rehabilitation plans could be a more efficient use of veterinarians’ time and skill sets.

A little while ago we decided to create a joint supplement that was both better and cheaper then the likes of Yumove. Judging by the repeat orders and the positive feedback we constantly receive, it looks like we got it right!. If you'd like a FREE sample for your dog feel free to reach out. Slightly nervous about posting this, as no doubt it will offend some therapists. But a very recent experience has prompted me to write about professional qualifications (or lack of in some cases) within the industry, and the ramifications of therapists giving advice when they dont have the appropriate level of expertise...

How to find a suitably qualified canine physio

31/05/2024

So this week I've been pee'd on by a Cane Corso, had a Frenchie trying to hump me at every opportunity, was licked in the eyball by a Staffie, nipped at by a Jack Russell and to top it off received a full on headbutt from a very excited Labradoodle 😐 But still the best job in the world 😀

These are the types of results that make all the study and training worthwhile 🙂 Meet Sugar (owner calls her shug-shugs). She's a rescue, who has always had the issue on her right forelimb which can't be surgically repaired, so has always been reliant on the other three legs. Just over 6 weeks ago she suffered some form of spinal incident which meant she lost the use of her hindlimbs and subsequently wasnt eating or drinking. At the vet visit the owner was effectively told "if she hasnt improved by the morning bring her back and we will put her to sleep" I'm not going to say which vet - but needless to say the lack of compassion and indifference was completely unprofessional - they didnt even offer to do any tests or x-rays. Owner was completely distraught, but called me to see if I felt I could help. The video is from my last visit, after 5 weeks of careful rehab and a lot of commitment from the owner, she is back on her feet and you would never have known she was injured. She's a really sweet girl who just needed someone to beleive in her. As for the vet practise - shame on you

One of the difficulties we constantly encounter as physio's is how to help an active dog who has to have exercise restricted for a period of time. One of my amazing owners put this giant snuffle box together for hers. Lots of mental stimulation finding small treats which she absolutely loves, without the musculoskeletal strain of going for a long walk!

The next research article from my PhD - some really interesting data on injury starting to emerge (Message me for the full paper)

Abstract The risk of injury to canine flyball competitors has been noted as similar to that reported for canine agility, affecting approximately one third of competitors throughout their careers. To date, no studies have examined whether elements such as consistently turning in one direction during....

Had the opportunity to get back in the treadmill for this amazing boy at Pet Therapy Rooms. A young Mastiff who already weighs 45kg (and will probably end up being about 80kg) who suffered a spinal incident a few months ago. Owners have worked incredibly hard with all of his rehab and its really starting to pay off.

An amazing 2 days of data collection with teams from the British Flyball Association as part of my PhD research into canine biomechanics and injury risk. Over 200 videos collected using a 3D system and pressure matting allowing us to analyse a huge amount of variables include joint angulation, impact pressures and limb torque. Its a genuine pleasure to be able to work with these incredible dogs and owners.

The Benefits of Canine Massage Therapy

Most of us know how relaxing a massage can be, particularly to relieve aches and pains caused by tense or over-worked muscles. Massage is one of the oldest known techniques for healing.

The benefits are just as applicable to the well-being of your dog!
Massage therapy can improve blood flow, reduce muscle spasms, and increase flexibility. It can also reduce swelling after surgery, help with osteoarthritis or mobility issues, improve athletic performance, and help manage chronic pain.

It is worth noting that dogs don’t have to be injured to benefit from massage. It can help maintain and improve the quality of life and mobility in older dogs and keep sporting dogs at the top of their game. It can even help dogs with anxiety and nervous behaviour.

Find an Animal Sports Therapy and Massage specialist accredited by the Animal Health Professional’s Register so you can be sure they adhere to the highest standards - www.ahpr.org.uk/the-register
