Getting to know you…..

Hello lovely followers ☺️ for those who don’t know me, I’m Hayley 👋🏻 the founder of Equine Evolutions. I started my business a few years ago with the sole purpose of making horses feel better, get stronger and be at less risk of injury and pain. I am passionate about force free training, having spent the majority of my teenage and adult life believing I had to be ‘in charge’ or ‘the boss’ of the horse. I have changed, grown and accepted I was wrong and now it’s time to do better. I want to educate and spread this new found knowledge. To make life better for horses.

I want to know what you have learnt, what you once thought was good practice but now realise it is not.
Or, maybe you are open to changing your mindset and learning what this new information is all about?

Share your stories and experiences, let’s be open and honest so we can all grow together to make life better for the beloved horse ❤️

Tip of the iceberg, but it’s a start. Horses cannot learn or process anything when in flight mode. Ignoring early efforts to communicate will result in trigger stacking and this is when the horse literally cannot cope anymore. Usually described by humans as ‘coming out of the blue’ or ‘suddenly exploded for no reason’. There are always signs, and we must learn to read them.

The way horses respond to trauma and the lasting impact of a bad experience in early life have been highlighted by experts

I had the pleasure of meeting this wonderful human at the National Equine Show. Mental Health is so important to us all. Follow The EquiPsych - The Equestrian Rider Psychologist for more info 😊

🗨 I once had a black dog, his name was Depression🗨

This is going to be a hard one, but here goes..

➡️I'm finally back after a weekend at The National Equine Show in Birmingham and just I'm getting around to decompress after a long weekend (and even longer winter).

🧠A topic I really wanted to speak with you about is mental health and how it affects us all in one way or another.

➡️I wasn't really aware of mental health and its impact until my early 20s when I went through Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This was whereby I experienced some trauma that was related to early childhood and it was here that i became familiar with The Black Dog, also known as Depression.

🧠Growing up was hard in a dysfunctional family, and I had no idea I suffered from depression for a significant amount of my life, I always thought it was the go to by "just geting over it" and to "man up". It was only in my mid-20s that something wasn't right. To feel so blue and so low for such an amount of time didn't feel right, even when everything started to go well.

I began to look at the symptoms:

➡️loss of motivation
➡️Increased Irritability
➡️Hopelessness
➡️Guilty Ridden
➡️ Anxiety
➡️ Lack of Enjoyment

🧠These signs, I had since childhood, but I thought this was normal to have.

➡️Growing up I always felt I couldn't ever "be" or "do" enough to be proud, I always wanted to strive for better and I saw this as a motivation rather than an internal struggle. What I didn't realise is that I saw myself as a loner, comparing myself to others and having an imposter within me at every step of the way, despite playing high level sport and being part of teams. It just never felt right.

🧠This is what piqued my interest in Psychology for A Level and University, as they say "to find yourself," and I did, or so I thought at that time.

➡️Over the years I've strived to work hard, hitting my personal milestones, to help as many people as I could in their mental health or sport and to enjoy life where I could, but it always felt there was a hole that could never be filled.

🧠The last year to now has been anything but that.. I found my work life balance was drastically misaligned, I was getting irritable at the slightest petty thing, I wasn't enjoying my horses (this is highly unlike me), I was constantly comparing myself to others and I felt I was "never good enough".

➡️So I worked even harder, on myself, my psychology, my NHS job, my career and CPD to "get ahead". This completely took it's toll on me over the last 12 months and very recently, I experienced extreme burnout. I became physically sick and this brought out the Black Dog once again.

🧠At the time of writing this, does it make me feel like a failure? Yes, however that is the irrational part of my mind telling me so because this behaviour kept me safe when I was younger.

✅️Do I truly believe I'm a failure? HELL NO!

✅️Do I think I need to readdress my balance? Most definitely!

🧠What I wanted to get across to you is that even a Psychologist, someone trained to support you at each turn, can struggle with their own mental health too at times, and that is okay.

➡️I am proud of the people I've worked with and their successes. I'm proud to be a huge part of organisations enhancing thwir riders, i'm proud to have taken that step up in Covid and supprt the publics mental health when many slipped through the net and I'm proud of my own achievements in Sport Psychology.

🧠Sometimes you need go hit the bottom of the barrel to realise...

‼️PSA‼️

How have we got to where we are?

In what reality is it normal for horses to throw themselves around, buck and rear, stop and spin, bite and kick? When did this become something to be ‘proud’ of?

Please please please, take note that if your horse starts doing any of the behaviours listed above, or even if they have done it as long as you’ve owned them, there is an issue, somewhere with something! I know that sounds quite daunting and broad, and pinpointing what the issue is can seem an impossible mission.

However, it is worth accepting that mission, for the peace of mind and treating whatever you find. For your horses sake, open your mind and investigate. Learn all you can along the way. Make whatever changes are necessary. Take into account that what we sometimes see as ‘excitement’ or ‘willingness’, is actually the opposite, anxiety and pain.

A horse that rushes into or out of a fence CAN be in pain or stressed to the point they want to get it over with as quickly as possible. This is particularly apparent if other pain/stress indicators are present, such as ears back, open mouths, bucking/disunited, landing on incorrect lead, throwing head up. I cannot stress enough about how badly we interpret equine behaviours. Their desperate attempts to communicate with us are so easily explained away as deliberate, sassy, lazy, spicy, opinionated or mareish. Why can’t we face the truth? Why can’t we accept that we get things wrong sometimes? Why can’t we put our egos to one side and consider that we might not be doing the right thing? I could go on, and on but I’ll leave it there today!

For those that recognise that any of the above behaviours are an indication of pain/stress/anxiety, I applaud and appreciate you 🙌🏻😊 Thank you 🙏🏻
