Pet Insurance - is your pet protected?

It's a sobering thought that in a typical year, roughly 1 in 3 pets will require veterinary treatment, so unexpected veterinary bills can unfortunately occur at any time.

Recent advances in veterinary medicine and surgery have meant that treatments that were unimaginable just a few years ago are now a reality; diagnostic procedures such as MRI and CT scans are increasingly routine, and surgical procedures such as cataract removals, spinal surgery and hip replacement are fairly commonplace.

In addition, a range of medical conditions such as skin disease and arthritis can also be very costly to treat.

On a daily basis we see the heart wrenching decisions some of our clients face regarding the treatment of their pets, but with appropriate pet insurance, we can hopefully ensure that any treatment decisions are made on the basis of need rather than cost. So, don't take any chances - make sure you get your pet insured today!

Please get in touch if you have any insurance issues -

Kennel Cough - Should my dog be vaccinated?

With the onset of warmer spring weather, it's time for pets to get out and about more - a time when they could be at risk of picking up kennel cough. This is a highly infectious cough that affects dogs, rapidly causing symptoms of severe coughing and breathlessness as well as high temperatures, sore throats and loss of appetite.

In the worst cases (such as in young or elderly dogs) it can cause severe and prolonged disease and may even be associated with death. Even in young healthy dogs it can cause weeks of coughing and malaise. This distressing condition is caused by a mixture of viruses and a bacterium - Bordetella bronchiseptica.

Luckily a vaccine is given by intra-nasal drops. We recommend that dogs are vaccinated against kennel cough before going into kennels (where dogs are kept close by one another and can rapidly transmit this infection) or at an time when the disease is rife.

Do I have to Microchip my Cat?

THE ANSWER IS YES

A new legislation was introduced on 13 March 2023 in England whereby all cat owners must get their pets microchipped by 10 June 2024.

The new rules mean cats must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks and their contact details stored and kept up to date in a pet microchipping database

Owners who do not get their cat microchipped will be given 21 days to have one implanted.

You could face a FINE of up to £500 if you do not adhere to these new rules.

To check if your cat has a microchip number or to book an implant appointment please call:

Stamford - 01780 764 333
Peterborough - 01733 230 000

All microchip numbers are stored on a microchip database, so, if your cat does go missing and they are handed in to the surgery we can easily match the microchip to the database.

BVA Eye Testing

What is BVA Eye Testing?

BVA Eye Testing is a physical eye examination carried out by an expert veterinary ophthalmologist to identify inherited and non-inherited eye conditions in dogs.

What happens at a BVA Eye Test Appointment?

Upon arrival at the surgery a member of the Clear Ridge nursing team will apply eye drops to dilate the pupil, these drops take between 20-30 minutes to work. A full eye examination will follow and any findings relayed to the owner.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Don't forget to bring your The Kennel Club UK registration documents when attending the appointment.

In addition to the BVA Eye Test a Gonioscopy can be booked at the same time as the eye test. Gonioscopy is an examination of the drainage angle within the eye, using a specially designed contact lens. Occlusion or partial occlusion of the drainage angle can lead to increase of pressure within the eye (Glaucoma).

Referral Eye Service

Clear Ridge Vets has a long-standing Referral Service for eye cases. Robert treats Ophthalmology cases across several species:

- from emergencies to eyelid problems
- ulcers to cataracts
- vision matters to neurological eye syndromes

Robert gained his certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology in 1989 and then succeeded in gaining a position on the British Veterinary Association - BVA Eye Panelist for hereditary disease by examination.

Spring Garden Perils for Pets

It's lovely to be out and about in the garden in the spring, but beware of unwittingly introducing hazards for your pets, as some of the plants and products we commonly use in our garden can be very toxic to animals.

Slug Pellets commonly contain the chemical metaldehyde and are generally blue or green in colour. Metaldehyde is very toxic to pets and since many dogs will eat almost anything, slug pellets should only be used with great care, keeping pets away from areas where they are used and stored.

Cocoa Shell Mulch is also to be avoided if you have a dog. Many gardeners apply a thick layer of mulch to their flower beds in the spring and summer months. A little known, but potentially lethal hazard is the use of cocoa shell mulch. Dogs are attracted to these shells by their smell, but they contain theobromine which is very poisonous to dogs. As a result, it is safer to use an alternative such as tree bark.

Spring bulbs are another seasonal hazard and can be fatal if dug up and eaten by your pets. Tulips and daffodils are toxic to dogs and cats: although all parts of the plant are toxic it is the bulbs that actually contain the most toxins. Lilies are also very toxic to cats and pose a hazard in the garden, and as cut flowers.

As a general rule, when adding anything to your garden, ALWAYS read the label carefully regarding the hazards to pets.

Fit not fat - fighting the flab!

The winter months are often a time of inactivity for many pets, when it is all too easy to put on a few extra pounds. Whilst it may be too late to make any New Year resolutions, perhaps now is the time to have a critical look at your pet. Is he or she carrying a bit of extra weight? Do they have a saggy tummy? Can you feel the ribs or do you just feel flesh? All of these can be signs that your pet is overweight.

Carrying extra weight places extra demands on virtually all the organs of the body. Excess weight can lead to or worsen many medical conditions including: and to name just a few.

Given the potential health problems association with excess weight - it is important to address it, and it is here that we can help. If you feel your pet is getting a little portly we are happy to weigh him or her and advise you on their ideal weight. We will also examine your pet to check for any medical conditions(such as an under-active thyroid gland that may result in weight gain.

To achieve weight loss pets need a combination of a specially formulated calorie controlled diet (often down to around 2/3 thirds their previous calorie intake) and more exercise. The good news is that as your pet loses weight the benefits of increased healthiness and vitality are usually seen quite quickly.

Please contact us for advice about your pet's ideal weight, diet and exercise regime - we are here to help!

Parasite Control - Do you know what Parasites are lurking?

Your pet could be at risk every day from internal parasites and external parasites; the risks could be lurking in the park or in your own garden. It is important to know the risks as soon as your pet starts to explore the outside world.

1. Internal Parasites - known as Endoparasites, live inside an animal. They live, feed and breed inside a pet's internal organs. They are contracted by ingesting poo and other organisms (including fleas, slugs, snails, mice) and the health problems and disease risk they pose can even be fatal.

Internal Parasites include Roundworm, Tapeworm, Lungworm, Hookworm, Heartworm, Fox Lungworm and Whipworm.

2. External Parasites - known as Ectoparasites live on the outside of an animal. These parasites will fly, jump or crawl onto a pet. The biting can cause irritation and discomfort and could lead to a major health problem if not treated.

External Parasite include Fleas, Ticks, Ear Mites, Mange Mites and Biting Lice.

Advice on parasite control and preventative measures can be discussed with our team. We can advise on a parasite control plan and help reduce your pet's parasite risk.

Important update from Nene Park following recent environmental visits. Please remain vigilant.

Water pollution update!
The Environment Agency have been continuing to investigate and test the water in the Goldie Lane area of the Park. We haven't yet had confirmation of what the pollutant is or the source, but the good news is that it hasn't spread any further into the river or lakes. The other encouraging news is that there don't seem to be any long term effects on invertebrates or river plant life.
Contractors have been busy over the weekend removing the large number of dead fish from the area. Fingers crossed this was an isolated incident.
The red circle on the picture below shows where the polluted area is in relation to the rest of the Park.
Please continue to take care when near water. Thank you!
