Last week we saw Louie a 20year old Amazon parrot, Louie visited for a nail trim.

Growing up to 18 inches in length from the beak to the ends of the tailfeathers, the Amazon parrot is one of the larger bird species commonly kept as pets.Like other large parrots, Amazons need a variety of toys that they can throw, chew, climb, and swing on. They are very intelligent birds that quickly become bored if left to their own devices, so they are recommended for owners who love to play and are looking for a pet with which they can spend a lot of time interacting and socialising.

Evie visited us recently due to recurring lip fold pyoderma.

Skin fold dermatitis is a dermatologic condition specific to dogs and cats who are prone to infections in the folds in the skin (“wrinkles”). They are usual more common in the pronounced facial and tail folds, in particular, though any deep skin fold anywhere in the body can yield skin fold dermatitis.

Surgical treatment is recommended when there is often recurrence. The skin folds/pockets are surgically removed, opening up the area and allowing proper ventilation of the skin and a reduction in the likelihood of recurring bacterial infection.

Evie is making a good recovery.

Biff the mischievous kitten managed to fracture his distal tibial growth plate. As Biff is only a kitten and still growing it was decided that a cross pin fixation would be the best option, this is when two pins are placed through the fracture to hold the bones in place whilst they knit back together. As Biff is very energetic his leg was also placed in a cast to offer additional stability, these will be removed in a few weeks time. Biff is on strict cage rest until further X-rays are taken.
