Handsome Hounds, established in 1994, has been based here in Studley since 2007. As the owner and sole groomer I have
over 27 years grooming experience, up to date Canine First Aid training and have studied canine behaviour and psychology. I offer a friendly, caring one to one grooming service for small to medium sized breeds using positive re

inforcement methods only. Grooming methods, styling and frequency are tailored to the needs of each individual dog and owner, it really isn't 'one size fits all' with dog grooming. When it comes to styling I prioritise comfort for the dog and practically for their owner. The spacious grooming salon is bright, clean and open plan and above all is secure and safe for my canine clients. Please be aware that I generally have a 6-8 week wait for appointments with short notice cancellations sometimes available.

Summer is finally here, the weather is 🥵🥵🥵.... our air conditioned salon is cool 😎😎😎
but any dogs who may struggle in the heat (i.e. any health concerns, young puppies, the oldies, the breathing compromised/brachycephalic breeds or any dogs who may just struggle coming out in the heat please get in touch and if necessary we can reschedule at a cooler time.

This little live wire came for her 3rd puppy session today and took it all in her stride. Bella is a very pretty 4.5 month old working cocker and such a happy, confident little pup, I'm looking forward to seeing how she develops 🤩 She kept still for a total of 3 seconds...here they are 🤣

I just thought I'd do a little post to explain how my bookings and availability work.

A client just contacted me who I've not seen for over 6 months. They cancelled their appointments in December, January and then again in February and now 3 months on they need an appointment asap. For their breed and type of haircut the dog should've been coming on an 8 weekly schedule, which initially it was.
I always run my client list at full capacity with dogs attending on a regular schedule, that way I know when I am able to take on new dogs and also cover all the running costs of the business.
So basically, it's one out, one in, if I lose a client that's been on a 6 weekly schedule I know I can take another on a 6 weekly schedule. I do have a handful of people who don't like to pre-book for whatever reason and come on a more ad-hoc basis, I usually have to rely on cancelled slots in the diary to fit these in but the majority pre book and keep the dogs on a regular 4/6/8/etc weekly schedule.

Sometimes I'll know when I lose a regular client, people tend to let me know if they move house, the dogs pass away etc but sometimes people just disappear and I can't hold the gap they leave indefinitely.

Another issue is when clients who come every 6 weeks during the warmer months decide to leave it longer between grooms in the winter, which many people do, I understand, but I have to fill those spaces with new dogs, I still have the same overheads. The knock on effect of this is that I may not have the availability come summer when those clients want to go back to 6 weeks again.

That's all a very long winded way of saying dogs who need a regular grooming schedule ideally need to stick to it 😁
The frequency will depend on breed, coat length/style, any behaviour issues we are working on and how much grooming owners want to do at home.
As a side note, longer between grooms means more hair, more work/products/electric/water as coats need to be washed, dried and prepped before any trimming, hence more cost.

FLEAS!! FLEAS!! FLEAS!!

I just wanted to discuss those dreaded fleas.

Recently I received a message from a client whose dog was due with me the following day.. The dog had had fleas for several weeks and they were asking if they should cancel their dogs appointment. Now I don't like to accept dogs with fleas due to the risk cross contamination but I do think my methods of containing, catching and killing fleas is very good. I do charge an extra £15 for dogs arriving with fleas to cover the costs of the extra time and products and cleaning involved. With it being such short notice to cancel the appointment (less than 48h notice incurs a 50% charge) I gave my client the option of cancelling or the £15 flea fee. They chose to keep the appointment.
I popped the dog straight in the bath and slathered on neat shampoo (4/5 times the amount I would normally use) as this suffocates the flea giving me the chance to go through the coat with a flea comb before they have chance to jump off. Totally convinced I'd caught and killed every flea, not loads but enough, I rinsed and dried the dog. I found no more fleas and felt confident the dog was flea free. At the end of the day, mask and gloves donned, I spayed the salon with Indorex as a precaution.
A couple of hours later I arrive home, kettle on for my after work cuppa and I feel a tickle on the back of my neck, yes, you guessed it, a live flea!
So, going forward, if you know your dog has fleas please cancel your appointment with adequate notice as I will no longer accept dogs with fleas. If I discover fleas during a groom all the above steps will be taken and the flea fee will be charged.
Also, it's worth mentioning that if you do need to treat your dog for fleas please use only products from your vet, they will be much stronger and effective than anything you can buy online or in pet shops etc. and will save you money in the long run.

Faces can get pretty grubby! I never scrimp on products, using only premium natural shampoos and conditioners for the very best results. All dogs receive a tearless, deep cleaning, wonderfully scented 'facial' included with every groom, it shouldn't be an added extra to wash faces with a high quality, safe product 😉🤩

🌡️HOT WEATHER and APPOINTMENT AVAILABILITY update 🌞 ....

I don't have availability to take any new clients at the moment, I will reassess this in August. Dogs who I've not seen for 6 months will be removed from the books and classed as a new client should they wish to return. My client list runs at full capacity with most dogs retuning on a 4 to 8 week schedule so unfortunately I don't usually have availability for ad hoc grooms.

Thanks to air con the salon is kept nice and cool to ensure the safety and comfort of your dogs (and groomer 😊) The hairdryers have a cold setting which is perfect for giving each dog its own personal fan for the short periods while they are waiting to go home. As ever, I will keep drying with warm air to a minimum, especially around faces.

Day 19; Lakeside 'can do' Christmas Calendar. Today we have this gorgeous boy relaxing at the groomers. Frodo has had a very difficult start to life and can be very anxious around new things. Thankfully he has lots of people supporting him and helping to build his confidence including Sue from Handsome Hounds Grooming Studley who has given him all the time and support he needs. A shout out to Sue and Frodo who 'can do' relaxing at the groomers. 😍

❗ Appointment Update ❗

If any of my existing clients haven't already booked then please get in touch asap as I've only a handful of spaces left before Christmas.

November is completely full apart from a couple of spaces on the afternoon of the 1st and a couple on the 30th.

December I have spaces on 1st, 6th, 7th 8th and 9th only.

I'm running a cancellation list for the 2 weeks prior to the Christmas shutdown, if anyone wants added please let me know asap. The salon will reopen on 4th January.

Unfortunately I'm unable to take any new clients at the moment and will reassess availablity in the new year 😊🐾

I hope you're all enjoying this lovely weather ☀️
Taking into account any extreme temperatures we may have over the next couple of weeks I will grooming from 8am to give my afternoon clients the option of an early morning appointment instead. I do have aircon in the salon but l also need to use a warm hair dryer to dry the dogs and need to be especially aware of their comfort and welfare. Some dogs may be going home a little damp while some high risk dogs such as brachycephalic (flat faced/respiratory compromised) breeds and elderly dogs may have to be postponed until its safe to groom them.
If anyone with a 2/2.30 appointment time wants to swap for an 8am then please let me know. Sue 🐾
