Hope you and all your fur babies have survived the heat today. A big thanks to those that changed their appointments from this afternoon and to those that came in early to beat the heat.

Please, please, please keep checking your dogs for those pesky grass seeds. I had this little terrier in at the start of this week and she had a scab under her armpit so it was eased out during a bath with antibacterial shampoo which revealed this hole and a lump underneath it. The owner was made aware immediately and a vet appointment was booked for the same day. This terrier lives out in the country side so loves doing what terrier’s do and having a good rummage in hedges so it could have been anything that could’ve caused it.
At the vets appointment it was flushed with saline but nothing appeared so a sedation appointment was made for the following day. Later that afternoon the owner gave it another squeeze and out came a lot of water plus the pesky seed and by the next morning the wound had closed up and dry.
The reason I’m highlighting this is because the dog had shown no sign of being in distress, not limping or trying to scratch or lick the area so the owner hadn’t thought to check, so if she hadn’t come to her regular grooming appointment it could’ve been a lot worse as the seed could’ve worked further into the body causing a massive infection and damaging any of her internal organs. Sounds dramatic but it does happen. Last year I had a little dog in that had been to the vets twice with a sore paw and was given steroids which had made no difference. Once I trimmed the fur away the poor little dog had a grass seed through his paw so I sent him back to the vet and he had to have anaesthetic to remove it. So if you just check your pets and brush them over to dislodged any of the pesky troublemakers. 🐾🐾🐾🐾

Please keep checking your dogs for grass seeds after a walk. Found several on this chap even though he was being clipped short they still remain hidden and can bury into the skin causing terrible infections needing vet treatment.

‼️RAPESEED‼️

Don’t be tempted by the idea of a fabulous insta perfect pic of your woofer in one of these vibrant yellow fields. The potential issues of a rapeseed field for your dog (and some humans!) are:
‼️Digestive issues
‼️Stomach tenderness
‼️Vomiting
‼️Diarrhoea
‼️Skin reactions

Not sure who’s more tired. Difference is she’s gone home for a sleep and I’ve got 2 more clients today 🥰🐾🥰🐾🥰🐾

🐍 Adders 🐍

As the weather begins to warm, we have noticed an increase in calls regarding adder bites.

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.

Veterinary professionals can call us any time on 02073 055 055 if required for assistance with managing cases of adder bites. We also hold a list of antivenom stockists across the UK. Please note that antivenom is not indicated in all cases.

If you see a dog with yellow on their lead, harness, collar, or coat - do you know what that means?

It's National Dogs In Yellow Day today! The Yellow Dog scheme aims to help walkers recognise dogs who are out in but need their space.

There are lots of reasons dogs might wear yellow, such as :
🐶 They are in training and need to concentrate,
🐶 They are anxious around new dogs or humans
🐶 They are recovering from illness or injury.

If you see a dog sporting some yellow on their outfit, make sure you and your dogs give them the space that they need!

Did you know:
If you have a pacemaker, you can put it in your Will to have your pacemaker donated to a dog in need after you pass. Pacemakers cannot be donated to another human, but they can be donated to dogs with cardiac issues who would depend on it to stay alive.
You can have the pacemaker brought to a vet of your choice. So many of those get thrown away and dogs die because people don't know they can do this. It even saves the dog's owner the cost of the actual pacemaker which sometimes means the difference in being able to afford lifesaving treatment or not.

I know I’ve been quiet on here lately, life really does like throwing curve balls. but still been working really hard . And this week has made me question why I’m bothering with the added stress of running a business, but thankfully the majority of my clients are wonderful and for those customers who want to make my life difficult there’s a list of lovely dogs waiting to take your place.
The gorgeous, handsome dog in the picture might get called a twatasaurus as he’s a total loon at times, yes he’s huge but as he’s been coming to me since he was a puppy he behaves impeccably while being groomed 🥰😍🥰😍

Started today with this brave soul, she’s a rescue and had been used and abused for breeding for years. It’s almost a year since she’s been in her new home and it’s taking quite a while to gain her trust as she’s so frightened of human contact but when she first came to me she was rigid with fear and wouldn’t make eye contact at all, but we are getting there as she still doesn’t like me working round the front of her or being dried but will now take a treat out of my hand while she’s on the table but when she’s on the floor she’s not so keen on me being in her space but we will get there. Wish dogs could speak to tell us what has happened to them 💔
