Where I go, they go!

It's hot, every year people like myself, Vets and others post about not walking your dogs in the heat.

Some people listen, some sadly don't.

I don't believe anyone doesn't listen because they want to make their dogs suffer.

I believe some people genuinely think dogs NEED a walk, some genuinely think they enjoy the sun and some think that the dog wouldn't go if they were hot, all can be untrue and dangerous.

I use enclosed fields a lot, we have been out very early to avoid heat.

However, today was a prime example, as I wonder round the fence perimeter, they are all playing and running about, however, if I stopped and went into the shade, they too went and chilled out in the shade.

Our movement can effects their decisions, our choices can effect their decisions.

We must be more mindful of this and seriously, I would love to never see a post again about the dangers heat can have on a dog as we should know better by now!

If our only goal when we take our dogs out is to physically tire them out then we are looking at it all wrong.

There is so much more to being outside.

Slowing down ( not easy with some dogs but it can be done), not caring about a route or distance, choices, smells, who cares if you only make it to the end of the street in half an hour because Fido has been sniffing everything, this is THIER time.

Just sitting and being outside somewhere quiet is massively underrated.

Yes, this is coming from someone who Breeds working high energy siberians....and yet still we do A LOT of low arousal activities.

My goal is to meet thier needs both physically, emotionally and mentally, not just tire them out because I want a peaceful evening or I am leaving them to go out.

Is it any wonder so many dogs go nuts when they go out when often going out is only paired with high arousal activities and behaviour.

A content dog does not always just mean a physically exhausted dog.

I cannot believe I am writing this.

For my lovely customers who don’t know.. Booties has recently been very poorly, and after having surgery on her tummy last week, it was discovered that she had a rapid growing cancer which had already spread to other organs. We have spent the last 10 days nursing her in the hope that she would feel better, but yesterday had to make the heartwrenching decision to let her leave us peacefully, as she was in such a lot of pain.
Our family is absolutely devastated to have lost such a unique, sweet and loving little girl, and at only 8 years old 💔
Life will never be the same 😔
