🌟 Meet the Team: Rachael 🌟

Veterinary Nurse

Rachael embarked on her journey in the veterinary industry in 1998 after completing a National Diploma in Animal Care at Bicton College. She became a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2013 and has since gained extensive experience working in Mixed practice, First opinion, and Referral clinics across the South. Her roles have included both Locum nurse and permanent positions, allowing her to build a wealth of knowledge.

Rachael's primary interests lie in Surgical nursing and Nurse clinics. When she's not caring for animals at work, she enjoys spending time outdoors, walking and camping with her four dogs 🐶—two of whom are proud rescues from St Giles Rescue. Rachael is also passionate about Paddle Boarding, swimming, and is currently learning to surf.

👩‍⚕️ Meet Ana, Our Dedicated Veterinary Surgeon 🩺🐾

A lot of you know Ana, as she has been with our practice for 12 years, becoming a cherished member of our team since she joined Ani Medics Vets (now Medivet) in 2012. Ana qualified as a Veterinary Surgeon from Universidade Vasco da Gama in Portugal in 2008 and has since dedicated herself to providing exceptional care in first opinion practice for over a decade.

After returning from maternity leave, Ana decided to balance her professional life and motherhood by working part-time (three days a week), allowing her to enjoy the best of both worlds. She is passionate about all aspects of small animal practice, with a particular love for medicine. Ana’s compassion and expertise make her an invaluable asset to our team and a beloved caregiver to all our furry patients. 🐶🐱🐰

Originally from the picturesque seaside town of Mira in Portugal, Ana has been calling England her home since 2008. Outside of her professional life, Ana keeps her body and mind healthy through balance and body combat classes. She loves exploring the beach and forest with her children, Emily and Benjamin, and her adorable cat, Mia. Ana’s love for travel keeps her adventurous spirit alive.

Fran graduated from The University of Veterinary Medicine in Kosice in 2015 and has dedicated the last 9 years to first opinion practice. Over the past 4 years, she has been working as a small animal locum, bringing her expertise and passion for animal care to various clinics.

Joining Medivet in February 2024, Fran has quickly become an integral part of our team. She has a keen interest in medicine, surgery, and diagnostics, always striving to provide the best care for your furry friends. 🐶🐱

When she’s not at the clinic, Fran loves exploring the beautiful Devonshire countryside and beaches with her family and friends. She’s also an avid traveller, always eager to experience different cultures around the world. 🌍✈️

Over the summer, our vets see a lot of dogs who have issues because of grass seeds. It is important to contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has an injury caused by a grass seed.

If walking your dog in long grass or woodland areas, we recommend checking your dog over and brushing away any grass seeds after the walk is done. Pay particular attention to paws, ears, eyes, and armpits.

Do you have questions about neutering your cat? It's something we strongly advise as it has many benefits for them and helps to tackle the number of stray cats in the UK.

Female cats will benefit from reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy, certain health conditions and even certain types of cancer. For male cats, neutering reduces their urge to fight other males, lessening the chance of certain diseases, and it also means they are less likely to mark their territory around your home.

Yesterday was Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, and we’d like to take a little time to remember and cherish all of the loving pets who left indelible paw prints on our hearts! 🐕❤️🐈

Even though they are no longer physically with us, their presence in our lives can never be erased. They made our days full of joy, love and innumerable adventures, and today is the day to remember them.

Flystrike is an awful disease that is extremely painful for your buns and can be fatal. However, it can be prevented.

Flies are attracted by faeces, urine and rotting foods, so to reduce the risk of Flystrike please check your rabbits’ bottoms regularly and ensure their housing is kept clean. You can even attach flyscreens for extra precaution.

Although Flystrike can occur any time of the year, it is especially common during the summer when the weather is hot and flies abundant.

When it comes to Flystrike, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

On September 1st we are seeing new prescription recommendations from the RCVS - Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons come into action!

We are asking for our loyal clients' patience and understanding while veterinary practices across the country try to change their protocols to reflect the new requirements from the RCVS.

In many cases protocols will be very similar and might not impact you at all, but you may notice some slight changes to your practices protocol in prescriptions and we ask that you remain understanding while this is implemented.

One of the biggest factors that may impact you as a client is that anti-parasitics (flea, worm and tick treatment) are going to be in the same band as antimicrobials and important drugs meaning that there needs to be a physical assessment and a physical examination before the *new* prescription of an anti-parasitic. This could result in slightly more regular, in practice, checks than you are currently used to. NB 'new prescription' refers to a different drug, different dose or different frequency than your pet is currently on.

The RCVS have said that:

"We realise that there are differences in opinion within the profession regarding the inclusion of antiparasitics in this part of the guidance.

There are a range of factors set out in the guidance to be taken into consideration when prescribing POM-Vs, and we understand that the opinion of some is that these can simply be applied to antibiotics and antiparasitics to ensure responsible prescribing.

However, it is our view that these medicines should be treated differently to other POM-Vs because the risk of uncontrolled use is greater, for example, resistance and environmental impact.

As such, the change requires a physical examination in order to positively impact prescribing behaviours and change attitudes to these medicines."
