Strangles Awareness Week, 6-12th May 2024

Raising awareness of how easily and rapidly Strangles can spread across the equine community, and why prevention measures are so crucial.

Redwings Horse sanctuary, The Horse Trust and the Surveillance of equine Strangles project have produced this great animation to spread awareness. Let's promote openness and supportive conversations about Strangles.

Every horse can get Strangles, and every person can make a difference.

Is your horse due for their annual vaccinations or the next vaccination in their initial course? Why not tie this in with your horse’s dental check!
Regular dental examinations are key to optimising your horse’s health & performance.
Regular dentals are encouraged whether they are advised to be annually, 6 or 3 monthly as a key aid in preventative healthcare.

Gastric ulcers can have a detrimental impact on a horse’s performance and temperament. If suspected, the only way to diagnose the condition is to perform a gastroscopy. This is a quick and simple procedure (approx 30mins) and can be carried out on the yard with no mains power required.

EGUS is the term used to describe the occurrence of gastric ulcers in horses (erosion of the stomach lining due to prolonged exposure to stomach acid). There are two forms of gastric ulcers: squamous ulcers & glandular ulcers (these relate to the two regions of the horse’s stomach).

Depending on the type of ulcers found the treating vet will dispense the appropriate medication and also discuss ways to reduce the risk factors that make gastric ulcers more likely to appear.

Ekygard+ offers a triple action for your horse’s stomach: preservation of the gastric mucosa, reduction of acidity and stabilisation of the bacterial flora.
In horses, the gastric mucosa is often affected by the highly acidic environment of the stomach, particularly during exercise or when the animal is stressed. Acidity may affect the horse’s quality of life, its digestive function and, of course, its performance.
These critical periods therefore require specific nutritional support.

We are aware that a local practice is unable to now provide veterinary cover to their registered clients and are expecting that this may lead to a number of enquiries to the practice. As many of you know we do currently have an active waiting list which is regularly reviewed.
We will be doing our best to assist whilst maintaining our current level of care to our existing clients, meaning we can devote the time and resources necessary to all clients and most importantly patients.
