Do you know how to spot blue-green algae?

Exposure to blue-green algae can cause long-term health problems in pets and can even be fatal. By drinking from or swimming in contaminated water, pets are at a high risk of becoming seriously ill.

Contact your vet immediately if you think your pet is at risk of blue-green algae poisoning. For more information of what to look out for and how to protect your pet, read our advice article here: https://bit.ly/3LqTmA4

Over the summer, our vets see a lot of dogs who have issues because of grass seeds. It is important to contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has an injury caused by a grass seed.

If walking your dog in long grass or woodland areas, we recommend checking your dog over and brushing away any grass seeds after the walk is done. Pay particular attention to paws, ears, eyes, and armpits.

To learn more about grass seeds, and our four simple steps for dealing with them, read our helpful advice article here: https://bit.ly/3zAdaOP

Do you have questions about neutering your cat? It's something we strongly advise as it has many benefits for them and helps to tackle the number of stray cats in the UK.

Female cats will benefit from reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy, certain health conditions and even certain types of cancer. For male cats, neutering reduces their urge to fight other males, lessening the chance of certain diseases, and it also means they are less likely to mark their territory around your home.

✨Update✨

Who remembers “Rob” that came in suffering badly with a life threatening condition. Immune mediated Thrombocytopenia.

Well here he is 6 weeks later and doing much better on his current medication. He is still coming in for monthly blood tests with the nurses to ensure his platelets are at a normal level during this long road to recovery!

Keep up the good work Rob! ❤️🐾

It’s important to keep your pet hydrated all year round as it delivers lots of benefits to your pets health, but especially during the warmer months. Cats and dogs both sweat through their paw pads, so as they’ll do this more now it’s hot, they will need to be provided with more fresh water. 💧

Read our tips below on keeping your pet hydrated and how to spot the symptoms of dehydration in your dog, cat or rabbit.

⚠️Grass seed season!⚠️
When you arrive back home, please search your dog’s fur for grass seeds like the one in the picture.
Ears and feet are the most common places.
And if your dog is suddenly very uncomfortable with his ear/s or licking one foot obsessively, please ring your vet as soon as possible. Grass seeds cause terrible damage and pain when they burrow themselves!
Please share to your friends with dogs 😃

😃 Happy Saturday!
Now summer is here (more or less), we are sorrounded by flowers! 💐
⚠️⚠️REMINDER!! ☠️Lilies ☠️ are gorgeous and smell great, but they are really poisonous to cats!
The orange pollen from the stems or on table sticks to the fur, cats lick it off and that is enough to cause fatal toxicity. It causes acute kidney failure and death. Chewing leaves/petals is also toxic.
So please, SHARE to all your friends with cats just in case they are unaware!

Some of you love seeing images of problems we have everyday 😃
This is an MRI image of a dog’s spine.
This pet was loosing control of his back legs’ movement, we reccomended to have a close look at the large nerve inside his spine.
You can see the large long spinal chord. The arrow points to the section that is being squeezed by a slipped disc from underneath.
This is painful and weakening; to solve it we did spinal surgery in one of our hospitals. The disc pushing the cord was removed to stop squeezing the nerve, and doggy was back on his feet and walking a couple of days later! 😃💜🐕🐾

😸I’ll settle here, if it’s alright!😸
We are fortunate and honoured to have clients staying with us for many many years, and we feel very lucky when they bring us their new pet once more. And full families! We have full family trees bringing us their pets! Grandparents, aunts and uncles, grandchildren.
Fortunate and honoured to get to know full families who keep choosing us to take care of their pets.
What an uplifting thought for a sunny Sunday morning.
Thank you so much to all our clients who choose us and bring their families. 😊💜

Please read! Hedgehogs numbers have reduced dramatically innthe last few years and it is a shame. Help take care of them!
Check you grass before cutting/strimming! And leave active hedgehogs in the garden alone, only call if they are not moving. Thank you 🦔💜

Please share. If you see a hedgehog early morning or early evening it's likely to be a sow hunting for food or collecting nesting materials. Just watch her from a distance. Please DO NOT pick up and take to a vet. Her hoglets need her. Only step in if she is wobbling, running in circles, coughing, bubbles from nose, screaming, sun bathing or injured will she need your help. As a thank you here's a hoglet taking a nap.

😃💜🐰aren’t they gorgeous?🐰💜😃
FEEDING REMINDER:
1: Most of a rabbit’s diet (75% -ish) needs to be good quality hay (Timothy hay for example) or grass,

2: 25% needs to be veggetables (carrots, broccoli shafts, kale, pots of herbs like basil, coriander, etc.

3: Finally, a 5% (ish) of rabbit concentrate pellets. Literally only an eggcup full of pellets, no more!
Fruit, only a small amount a week.

Feeding more pellets or fruit daily will make rabbits get overweight, have intestinal problems, and develop teeth disease. All of this problems are challenging to manage and become a long term issue, so please, eggcupfull of pellets only a day!
😊💜🐰

😃😸Wilma is here to remind you that MICROCHIPS FOR CATS ARE COMPULSORY FROM THE 1st OF JUNE😸😃
Microchips have been compulsory in dogs for many years, and now cats also must carry one.
Seeing the amount of cats that go missing, it is a very welcome meassure that will help all cat owners be reunited with their cat when they go wandering.
Not having a microchip in you pet cat can be fined with up to £500, so please get your cats microchipped!
If you can not remember if your cat(s) is chipped, any veterinary practice will check for you, please contact your local vet.
😊💜😸

Pets can develop skin allergies at any age, so it's important to make sure you know the signs and symptoms. Dogs may start scratching excessively, whereas cats may start licking their belly, back, or behind their legs more than usual.

The most common skin allergy is called atopic dermatitis, and although it's a lifelong condition, it can be controlled and managed, meaning your pet can lead a normal and healthy life. Treatments may include medication, supplements, or even newer monoclonal antibody treatments.

The law is changing - from 10 June 2024, cats in England must be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they’re 20 weeks old. The penalty for not microchipping your cat could be a £500 fine. A microchipped cat has a much higher chance of being reunited - please microchip your cat. 😃🎉✨UPDATE!!✨🎉😃
Remember this handsome face? 😃
He presented last Tuesday with spontaneous bleeding, we got him diagnosed and started treatment including platalet concentrate transfusion, but his situation was fragile until days past to see if his body responded.
Well, look at the results this morning! 😃🎉🎉🎉
Well done boy!!
Last Tuesday he presented with 1000 platelets (normal over 165000), today he has over 500000!!
😃
Still not out of the woods, though. He will require treatment and controls for at least 8 months if he does well going into remission. But looks very positive so far!
Well done boy 🎉✨👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

🎉✨Ultrasound scans are AMAZING!! 🎉✨This male dog arrived in a great deal of pain and feeling extremely unwell: he had been trying to wee for 2 days! Scan showed the tube out of his bladder got blocked with a stone at the level or prostate! Carefully managed to push it back into bladder to open up the tube and allow him to p*e. Surgery or dissolution are the options now, owner has chosen to try and dissolve it, so i’ll keep you posted!
Doggy is now back home after 2 days of flushing his system with a drip in hospital: the blockage had upset his kidneys. He is much better now 😃🐾✨💜
Stones in urinary bladder form when urine pH or urine components change and deposits start to form. They cause so much trouble!
My record is removing 27!! bladder stones like marbles from a little spaniel called Ellie about 12 years ago!😃💜🐶🐾

🐶This dog almost died, but he is doing better🐶
Rob (not his real name!) started leaving small puddles of blood at home, by the time owner realised where they came from and the puddles got big, he had only 1000 platelets where he should have had around 350000!!!
There are a few different causes for spontaneous bleeding, all of them fatal.
Within little more than 12 hours Rob had been diagnosed with IMTP (immunomediated thrombocitopaenia) and vital drugs started to be administered dierectly in his canula.
Here he is receiving as well a Platelet Concentrate Plasma transfussion, the most important part of his emergency treatment. Without this he most defintely would have died within a day or two.
Well, he is certainly not out of the woods yet, but he seems better. Isn’t he handsome?

Another blood test today to check progress!
We wish you good luck with your treatment program Rob!!
💜💪🏼🐶🐾

What better way to participate this year’s than to spend some time with your pets?

This year’s theme, Movement: moving for our mental health, encourages people to move in a way that suits them. Whether you’re taking your dog for a walk or playing games with your cat, being physically active is great for our minds and bodies. It's also a great way to bond with your pet.

Increased physical activity is not the only mental health benefit of spending time with your pet. Read our article on the six other mental health benefits of being a pet owner here: https://www.medivetgroup.com/pet-care/pet-advice/six-ways-pet-ownership-benefits-your-mental-health/

Dogs can pick up kennel cough multiple times throughout their lives, but in most cases, they can recover in a few weeks.

During this time, you should encourage your dog to rest and avoid collar and lead activity as it could put more strain on their respiratory system. You should talk to your vet if your dog’s cough persists, or if you notice any changes in behaviour such as a reduced appetite or less energy.

Our article on kennel cough explains more about the infection, what to look out for, and how to treat it. Read more here: https://bit.ly/44CKnV0

Is your rabbit protected against Myxomatosis? This highly infectious viral disease has a very high mortality rate and can leave your rabbit prone to other infections.

The best way to protect your rabbit is to vaccinate them, especially as there is no cure if your rabbit becomes infected. There's also ways to reduce the risk of your rabbit catching the virus.

You can read more about them, and Myxomatosis, in our advice article here: https://bit.ly/4blrPLu
