Armchair Dogs provides pet dog training in and around Southampton. We cater for all breeds and all ages, from puppies to pensioners. We take a relaxed, reward based approach to training and like to include all the family in the experience. If you would like to come along and watch one of our classes, just ask!

Three wonderful puppies started their training with us tonight; meet Scrumpy the lab, Winnie the chihuahua and Scout the golden retriever. They all did brilliantly. Lots for them to think about and practise over the coming week! 🐾🐶🐾🐶🐾🐶

This is why we include handling in our puppy classes. If a dog is worried when we go to handle them, we don’t, we stop and chat. Never force a dog to be touched. One of ours isn’t overly keen, he will let me do some but then emits a small growl, and I stop, sometimes halfway through a stroke. That’s him saying I’ve had enough, back off! I don’t want to get bitten and I don’t want him to get to the point where he has to bite.

No new puppies tonight, but I just wanted to say thank you.
Thank you to everyone who interacts with my posts (I know they can be a bit weird sometimes 😂🙈) I appreciate it.
Thank you to everyone who recommends us to their friends, families, people they meet with puppies, so much of our custom comes through recommendations.
And lastly thank you to everyone who buys their dog treats/supplies from us either in person or online. We are passionate about the products we sell and only sell things we feel are good for your dog. We also put all products through a stringent testing process - aka our six daxies get to try stuff out first 😂 without your continued support and purchases we couldn’t do what we do, so 🙏 thank you ❤️🐾🦴🐶

Oh, and Wilbur says thanks for all the love he gets, he is the soppiest of the lot and just adores everyone!

My goodness this evening was busy! I also just remembered I completely forgot to post this rather handsome young man who started his puppy training this evening, meet Ziggy ❤️🥰 he aced it and already lays down on cue! (So already doing better than one of ours who is yet to master this basic 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️) Welcome Ziggy!

I tried to catch the youngest playing earlier, but he was running zoomies round the garden and I literally couldn’t keep up 😂🙈 he kept trying to help with my plants too 🪴
Did you know that raw veg is an excellent treat for dogs? Like everything, only in moderation, particularly carrots as they are high in sugar, but ours love broccoli, carrot, tomatoes, red cabbage, cauliflower…. I have 14 guinea pigs too, and they get veg every night, so of course the dogs get something too! 🙄😂
Tonight I’ve been moving the trays of broccoli, carrots, sweet corn and some tomatoes onto the shelves, and planted some of the stronger tomato plants into the red bag. In the other bag are potatoes - which dogs can have cooked.
Very little veg goes to waste in this house, and I have a sneaky feeling the tomatoes will be picked and eaten straight off the plant by my little helpers 🤷‍♀️🤣🥦🍅🥕🥔

Do you think we should include this in our classes? Nail maintenance is so important, especially for Wilbur; he has been hospitalised with IVDD twice, once in his back and once in his neck. If his nails/claws get too long it impacts how he stands. Because of his surgery, he also hates being restrained and having his claws cut. So we’ve been working on self maintenance! We are at the point where he only gets clicked if he scrapes them twice, but does get rewarded for others to keep the focus and engagement. Slowly but surely we are building a positive behaviour and it’s all been taught through shaping. A regular exercise in puppy class is speed steps. The name is misleading, it’s not about speed 🙈😂 The focus of this is teaching puppies to develop awareness of what’s under their paws. The first run is usually pretty smooth, the second run they knock them everywhere because they are suddenly aware and trying to avoid. By the fourth run they’ve usually got the hang of it and begin to think about where they are putting their paws. Leon and I took Wilbur for his first hydrotherapy session at Hydrotherapy Four Paws today. He did awesome, his determination to succeed is incredible 💖 we can thoroughly recommend the guys who are knowledgeable, caring and friendly, and genuinely enjoy their job 💖 #ivdd #ivddsurvivor #ivddrecovery #dachshundsofinstagram

For anyone wondering how Wilbur is doing…. We are 7 1/2 weeks post surgery now and he is good. Still not up to full strength, but doing more every day. Second video in the comments to show how fast he can be! 💖 #ivddsurvivor #ivddrecovery #ivdd

We are 4.5 weeks post surgery now. He has had a couple of physio sessions and I am doing daily exercises with him. This is a good activity for him to do independently as scatter feeding slows all of them down, I don’t have to worry about the others starting to play - he always wants to join in - and it gives me a chance to observe him properly, it’s hard to tell what he is doing when I’m holding him up by the sling 😂 His right leg is still a bit weaker, so he often has his left foot under the middle of him for balance/centre of gravity. His back is still arched but some of that is muscle tightness. Overall tho, for a dog who was completely paralysed at grade 5 with an exploded disc, he’s doing grand and wants to do a lot more than he physically can! 💖🐾
