Like people, animals can suffer from muscular pain and discomfort which can inhibit the way they move causing them to use their body incorrectly to compensate and is where many ridden problems stem from. Physical Therapy and bodywork is beneficial to all horses and ponies :- the youngster to the retired, ,happy hacker to pleasure or competition horse .

Fabulous afternoon with some very special horses 🐴 and the lovely Emily .
✨First of all there was 20 year old Tom who particularly enjoyed work on his neck and shoulders , he had slipped during a farrier appointment and needed a few tweaks and massage and release. He should be now all comfy to bring back in to work post lockdown to hopefully get out and do some veteran dressage
✨Next up was Gorgeous little welshie Bob , Bob had been recently having some hind end issues , tightness was found through his pelvis and sacrum and his sheath was looking pretty swollen. Bob thoroughly enjoyed his session and after my myofascial work along with gelding scar release his sheath was back to a regular size (wish we had pictures as the difference was amazing!!) 🤩
,✨And finally a short communication session with the gentle giant Harold using energy and kinetic muscle techniques . Harry answered some questions his mum Emily had been wanting to ask him, 😊everyone is happy 😊 .

Following last nights announcement from the government , I will shortly be releasing my back to work plans -

This will not mean back to normal . Social distancing & Risk assessments etc will apply, which will mean changes will need to be made to protect us all, I am just awaiting information from the RCVS, governing bodies and my insurer before my exact plans are made.

In the meantime I have received this morning my bulk buy of Leucillin which i can use on myself before and your horses after sessions. Leucillin is one of my favourite products already but has recently undergone clinical trials and has been found to be an topically effective against Coronaviruses and SARS cov 2 :)

Leucillin VIRUCIDAL Update
coronaviruses and SARS‐CoV‐2

Due to the influx of requests regarding Leucillin’s disinfectant efficacy against virus’, providing a reliable pet safe sanitiser, we undertook to update the relevant tests against Coronavirus with leading microbiology contract research organization and Government approved BluTest Laboratories.

Whilst I have some spare time on my hands, and missing being able to come out to see everyone's horses 🐴 due to the lockdown, I have been completing some additional continued professional development. Todays training was a very interesting subject done live via Zoom ' Muscle testing in animal therapy; this can be used hands on and in distance sessions and is a very powerful modality and I am looking forward to putting it in to practice . Next week we have arranged CPD in ' finding the emotion at the end of the dysfunction' . I am also currently undertaking Equine structural analysis CPD and some personal development for myself :) I will be building a website over the next week and also rebranding slightly to give a more accurate description of my services and skills I am able to offer to you and your horses ( and also to try and prevent regular phone calls from lonely men who would like a massage 😂🤣) . My own horse China is currently being slowly rehabilitated after bi lateral annular ligament surgery , and so far is exceeding my initial expectations in soundness :) Hoping everyone is staying safe and well and looking forward to being back out on the road soon

🔄REPETITIVE CIRCLES🔄

This is a really useful diagram that highlights how repeatedly riding horses or lunging in circles can be detrimental to joint health. Particularly considering those horses with ligament or degenerative joint problems.

I am now trained in Animal Accupressure , which can be booked as a stand alone session or incorporated in to a massage/bodywork session for horses or dogs.
I have recently applied accupressure to my elderly dog and have been amazed with the results , better than I could have imagined, he is now moving freer than he has for months and is no longer lame on his back end, there have also been great improvements to his general well being and anxiety issues

Acupressure is an ancient Chinese healing art that has been practiced for 5,000 years. Based on the same principles of acupuncture, acupressure is the application of pressure on certain points of the body. In a gentle and non-invasive way, this pressure balances and releases the flow of blocked energy, enhancing health and mental stability.

Although acupressure is commonly used to relieve pain and discomfort, this ancient art has many more benefits which include:
Strengthening the immune system

Strengthening, muscles, tendons, joints, and bones

Releasing natural cortisone, which alleviates inflammation and swelling

Releasing endorphins instrumental in calming and relieving pain

Sharpening mental focus

Increasing circulation

Removing toxins

Alleviating anxiety

Helping with behavioral issues

Improving digestion.

What is Myofascial Release for the Horse?

Like the human body, your horse is composed of fascia, which is a three-dimensional connective tissue web that runs from head to tail.

The white, glistening fibers you see when you pull a piece of meat apart or when you pull chicken skin away is fascia.

Like the human body, your horse is composed of fascia, which is a three-dimensional connective tissue web that runs from head to tail. Fascia surrounds and infuses within every muscle, bone, organ, nerve, blood vessel, tendon, and ligament in the body. It surrounds every single cell in the body as it travels in one continuous web-like sheath from head to tail in the horse's body.

The white, glistening fibers you see when you pull a piece of meat apart or when you pull chicken skin away is fascia. This connective tissue web acts as a shock absorber in your horse's body. Throughout physical training programs or certain injuries, stress or trauma are too great for the horse's fascial system to handle and it becomes bound down, causing postural and gait deviations, loss of flexibility, and compression of pain sensitive structures and bone in the body. When left untreated, fascial restrictions begin to tighten over time, pulling throughout the horse's body along this continuous web.

Fascial restriction has the capability of pulling 2,000 pounds per square inch of tension in one area. That is an enormous amount of tension to overcome and is the cause of many problems that limit the performance of the equine athlete, including poor collection, balance problems, lack of flexibility, lead change problems, behavioral issues, sore muscles, back pain, Pelvic pain and asymmetry and tendon and ligament injuries. This is why Equine Myofascial Release is a whole body connective tissue approach that works very well with other theraputic methods such as joint mobilisations, chiropractic and acupuncture.

Infared light therapy explained :-

The cell is the building block of the body and if each cell is able to function optimally, the body will heal itself.

Light therapy works by restoring energy in damaged cells and increasing blood flow using highly beneficial wavelengths of red and infrared light. The function of a cell will be compromised after damage caused by injury, surgery, disease or if the body is slower to heal from conditions such as diabetes. When light therapy is applied quickly after acute injury, the process of cell death can be prevented which will lead to quicker healing and recovery following injury.

Cells in people and animals are receptive to light and from numerous clinical and scientific studies, the proven effects of red and infrared light are:

- Increases energy in cells (production of ATP in the mitochondria)
- Increases circulation
- Increased cell regeneration
- Reduces inflammation and increases lymphatic activity
- Cell death is reversed when applied within 4-6 hrs of injury
Cell death is reversed when applied within 4-6 hrs of injury
- Regulation of collagen production helping to reduce scarring
-Pain relief and calming by increasing endorphins and serotonin

I use Infared therapy during my massage treatments with horses , this therapy can also be used to heal wounds and clear infections and abcesses

Equine and Canine Merishia Massage (Level 4 accredited practitioner) . Fascial Edge tool practitioner & Infared Therapy.

Relieves Muscle Tightness and Spasms .Merishia massage is a hands on technique that combines massage with facial release, deep tissue mobilisation and stretching and helps to relieve tension and ease muscle tightness and spasms in horses and dogs. It will aid in making and keeping your animal supple thus reducing risk of injury. I can also use Reiki techniques during the treatment session which can add to the relaxation of your animal and activate natural healing processes. This form of treatment is suitable for all types of horses ponies and dogs , from youngsters who will also benefit from learning that the human touch can be calming and relaxing , to performance and working animals who may experiencing muscle tension, or who will just benefit from feeling more relaxed and comfortable in their movement.
