The dog paw has five basic parts:

• The Claws
• The Digital Pads
• The Metacarpal Pad (on the front paws) and Metatarsal Pad (on the rear paws)
• The Dew Claw
• The Carpal Pad

The metacarpal, metatarsal, and digital pads function as the load-bearing, shock-absorbing pads to protect the joints and bones in your dog's paws. They're covered in thick skin that also helps with skid and traction on a slope or while stopping.

The claws provide traction and help a dog dig.

The purpose of the dew claw remains a mystery, though it is believed to have been more useful historically in certain dog breeds for extra grip or for keeping something they are chewing in place.

Not all dogs have dew claws. For most, they will be on the front legs. Less commonly, some dogs will have them on the rear legs. 🐾🐾

In the beginning of my story..

There was a dog called Rowan. Now, Rowan was lovely but he was becoming increasingly dangerous around other dogs and after one too many incidents he was unfortunately booked to be put to sleep.

In a last bid, panic emergency (to buy some time)... I brought him to my house and I remember we kind of sat on the floor and looked at eachother, bemused. I'd never had a dog and I wasn't exactly sure where to start.

But start we did.

There were tantrums, tears, mud, mistakes, head in hands moments, and a lot of 'one step forward - two steps back'

but over the course of around 18 months... we made it.

He loved dogs, he played - had adventures, relaxed into life and transformed our world.

Along the way.. I found myself enthralled by what the behaviourist and trainers were doing. What were the processes? Why did things work and other things not? What was going on? And so my keen interest began...
