Look away if youβre squeamish! π€’
With all the wet weather we have had and now this hot sunshine, we have seen a few cases of fly strike! πͺ° π - Can you spot the maggots in this video? π«£
Signs of fly strike might include your horse being irritable, stamping their legs, some bad smelling discharge or you might see some maggots themselves crawling around. π€’
Areas that can be affected (but not limited to) include; sheath, frogs and soles of feet particularly if your horse has deep clefts for them to hide in, wounds or abrasions and sometimes the tail head. πͺ°
What should you do if you think your horse has fly strike? Donβt panic! π± If your horse is calm and sensible then see if you can assess the extent of the area affected. Sometimes they are really uncomfortable and require sedation to examine properly. If this is the case then call your vet now!
If you can wash the area then you may be able to manually remove all the maggots - again sometimes this requires sedation. π§Ό
If you think your horse has an infected wound or sore, call your vet and they can examine the area carefully to decide the best course of action.
π As always, prevention is better than cure!
Good hygiene at this time of year is crucial, and manage those flies as best as you can - we know sometimes it can be difficult! Fly repellants, fly rugs and masks and providing field shelter where your horse can get some respite from the flies when they are out can all be really useful. πͺ°
