This is Diesel, who was admitted to the practice to see Abi after sustaining a large wound to his upper right fore ๐ค
The wound was clipped, cleaned and flushed so that it could be further assessed. It was then decided to stitch the wound together and place a drain, however, due to the high motion area and initial contamination in the wound it was advised that it was likely that the wound would breakdown but, stitching to start with, protects the tissues underneath and allows them a chance to start healing.
A week later, as suspected Dieselโs wound began to breakdown, meaning that it would now be managed as an open wound and allowed to heal by second intention (where the body fills in the wound itself and heals naturally with granulation tissue and wound contraction).
The images here show how Dieselโs wound progressed over the coming weeks and months. It was closely managed by Abi with trimming of the granulation tissue (proud flesh), application of an antibiotic cream and manuka honey (encourages wound healing). These things all promote the best possible wound healing and keep the skin edges in line. In between visits, Diesel was carefully managed and cared for by his owner who spent a lot of time cleaning and applying creams to the wound!
Three and a half months later, and Diesel is fully healed and back enjoying everyday life!

We can now measure the risk of laminitis in your horse. These tests are run in-house at our own laboratory ๐งช
Almost 90% of laminitis diagnosed is considered to be endocrinopathic (hormone driven) in origin and is associated with hyperinsulinaemia (high levels of insulin in the blood).
โ ๏ธResearch has shown that horses with Cushingโs and concurrent hyperinsulinaemia experience laminitic episodes more frequently than Cushingโs horses and ponies with normal insulin.
We routinely use insulin testing in the diagnosis of Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) to provide information about insulin dysregulation and laminitis risk. However, it is also useful to provide information about the risk of laminitis in horses and ponies suspected of or diagnosed with equine Cushingโs disease.
As a result, we recommend testing basal (baseline) insulin in conjunction with ACTH testing to determine laminitis risk and allow us to tailor management recommendations for individual horses and ponies accordingly. Blood for this test can be taken at the same time as ACTH and there is no need to withhold food from your horse.

As laminitis is a big problem at the moment, we thought we would start our new feature by showing how to find the digital pulse. This can be found above & below the fetlock and if there is any inflammation of the tissues in the leg or hoof the blood flow will be increased making the pulse stronger and so easier for you to feel.
Recently Abi visited a couple of super cute Shire foals for their health checks & we couldnโt resist sharing this little colt with you ๐ฅฐ๐ด

We see a surge in feather mite cases through the winter months often due to wet weather and increased stabling. Clinical signs to watch out for include stamping, gnawing and itching of the legs.
This can be treated through stable management and veterinary guidance.
Ways to help discourage mites:

โญ๏ธClip feathered legs / keep feathers well groomed
โญ๏ธUse a shampoo designed to break down dirt on greasy legs
