Why we recommend less than 10% starch and sugar combined for horses and ponies prone to laminitis.

Everything your horse or pony eats, including grass, hay and hard feed will contain varying degrees of starch and sugar, however for horses and ponies prone to laminitis we aim to keep the diet as low as possible at under 10% combined.

UK grass and hay contains very little starch, yet the sugar levels can vary greatly. Without carrying out analysis of your hay supply, including every bale if from different fields/sources, it is very difficult to know how much sugar your horse or pony is getting from their supplementary forage, which is why we recommend soaking hay to reduce sugar content.

Grass is even more difficult as levels fluctuate throughout the day and according to weather, soil type and stocking density leading to the common recommendations of overnight turnout and avoidance of the spring and autumn flushes of grass.

Due to these difficulties, Allen & Page will only recommend our feeds that contain less than 10% combined starch and sugar for horses and ponies prone to laminitis, so alongside recommended management techniques you can be sure you are providing your horse or pony with the lowest total starch and sugar diet possible.

It is easy to assume that more feed equals more calories. However, if you choose the correct feed for your horse’s breed, workload and condition, you may find yourself saving on feed and therefore cost!

For Example:
A lower calorie, soaked feed is ideal for good doers as when soaked it seems as though there is more feed in the bucket, keeping their appetite and nutritional needs satisfied.
• A soaked feed will expand, creating more bulk in the bucket, making your horse or pony feel fuller for longer.
• A fully balanced feed when fed at recommended amounts will provide all the nutrition needed without the addition of balancers and supplements.
