Although dogs naturally form close bonds with humans, there are many ways in which we can enhance these relationships. When we have clear channels of communication, it becomes much easier to ‘train’ our dogs and teach them useful and fun behaviours. Without communication or relationship it is unlikely that ‘training’ will be very successful from human or canine perspectives. When a dog displays wh

at we see as inappropriate/naughty or unwanted behaviours, there is always a reason for it – from the dog’s point of view! Taking into account why the dog chooses this behaviour, and what we might want in its place, the guardian is ready to implement a training programme. We are strongly committed to using non-confrontational methods, basing our approach to training on sound underlying principles, and continuing to reflect on the client’s progress.

Well Connected Canine Update:

We have some important news to share with you all, as you know Morag has been working for Dogs Trust for the last year and from next week Clare will be starting a new full time role with Hearing Dogs.

This means that we no longer have the time to dedicate to Well Connected Canine and have taken the decision to close the company at the end of the year.

Clare will continue to offer support to some of her existing clients until the end of the year and help to find alternative support for some of her other clients.

We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to our clients, colleagues and friends for all their support over the last 14 years

If you are looking for dog training in the York and Bridlington area please do reach out to Gina and Andrea, who have been part of the Well Connected Canine Team for a number of years and have now started their own venture, Canine Training Yorkshire https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61552965371373

Quinn and I achieved our Gundog Club Grade 1 (with distinction) this week. Quinn did me proud despite the awful weather (wind and torrential rain)

We trained with Jane at WaggaWuffins Canine College and were assessed by Lindsay from Paws & Play Gundogs

We were up early this morning to get to the beach before it got too warm. We took a big container of water so the girls stayed hydrated. Plenty of paddling was had and we left as it started to heat up. The rest of the day will be spent resting and staying cool at home.

**Shock collar ban in England**
Having spoken with an RSPCA official this morning there is a real risk that this legislation will not make it through the final legislative hurdle. MPs are being swamped by pro e-collar emails. please contact your MP (link for info here: https://www.rspca.org.uk/getinvolved/campaign/shockcollars)

Even more offensive is the latest claim that only e-collars can give deaf dogs off-lead freedom......We can't even begin to express my horror at such a statement.
Morag is helping the RSPCA with a response based on 15yrs of training deaf dogs but please - share the word and let's make the ban reality.

Quinn and I (with Summer the Flatcoat as back up dog) are enjoying a lovely break in mid-Wales, we're still technically working though as we're on a gundog holiday! Day one is over and Quinn is shattered already, but she did work super hard in our session.

How do your dog's communicate it's nearly dinner time? This is Quinns strategy, though she's 20 minutes early 😆

Advanced notice that I will be away from Monday 26th June until Monday 3rd July.

Some of that time will be spent on a gundog holiday with my youngest spaniel, Quinn, in mid Wales.

I'm hoping for some cooler weather, lots of learning and having a great time with my dog :)

It's going to be super warm for the next few days. I'm not planning any walks until late evenings (because I am not an early enough riser for morning walks!) when it's cool enough.

We'll be hanging about indoors or where it's shaded in the garden, the oldies will mostly nap and the youngsters will get some activities to keep them amused.

If you are walking your dog or they are doing activities in the garden like ball play, do observe them carefully for any signs they might be struggling with heatstroke, it comes on quickly and can be fatal, particularly in breeds with flat faces.

Let me know how you are keeping your dogs cool 😎

With this weekend set to be a warm one, we wanted to give you a heads up on six signs of heatstroke in your dog ☀️🐶
🐾 Heavy panting
🐾 Excessive drooling
🐾 Vomiting
🐾 Drowsy and uncoordinated
🐾 Diarrhoea
🐾 Collapsing
Please keep yourselves and your pooches safe 💛

Just a quick post to say that I (Clare) will be a little slower in responding to emails and messages over the next couple of weeks.

I have my final exams for my MSc in Clinical Animal behaviour next week and the week after, so it may mean I am not checking my emails and messages as often and getting back to you may take me longer than usual.

I hope you all had a lovely Bank Holiday. I did manage to get out with the dogs for a lovely long walk (in between revision sessions) to recharge my batteries 😄

I hope everyone has had a lovely Easter break. My dogs have had a lovely time, especially helping to dispose of any (safe) leftovers. Here they are waiting to help with the beef!

I'm now back and will be replying to messages and emails over the next couple of days.

Laura, our Office Manager, is away until next week, so any emails sent to the main inbox will be picked up then.

Today is National Puppy Day, I thought I'd share a picture of Quests puppies who were just 1 day old this time last year :)

I'd love to see a picture of your current puppy or your dog as a puppy.

(those with rescue dogs without puppy pictures will have their chance on 20 May when it's National Rescue Dog Day!)

Advanced notice that we'll be closing the office for a short period over the Easter Holiday.
Clare will be unavailable from 3rd until the 11th April and the main office will be closed from 6th until the 17th April.

Please bear with us if we're a little slower responding to emails or messages at the minute, I have picked up a nasty flu bug so I'm taking some time to recover. Luckily I have nurse Quest on hand to help me (video filmed last year as part of an MSc module).
