The Manhyia Palace Museum was created within the old residence of Otumfuo Agyeman Prempeh I and Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, the thirteenth and fourteenth Kings of Ashanti.

The Museum is unique in West Africa, being created by a single people, the Ashanti Nation, to commemorate their own leaders, and to communicate the riches of their history and culture to future generations and to the ever-increasing numbers of visitors to Ghana.

The exhibits within the Museum include life-sized effigies representing Otumfuo Agyeman Prempeh I (1888-19931), Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II (1931-1970), Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko (1945-1977), Otumfuo Opoku Ware II (1970-1999), Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II (1977 to date), Nana Yaa Akyaa (1880-1917), Nana Yaa Asantewaa and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II (1999 to date), the reigning Ashanti King. Others include Regalia, photographs, medals, furniture, drums and palanquins which are over two hundred years old, a battle dress which dates back to 1900 and many objects of historical significance.

The Manhyia Palace Museum is one of several stops when you book an Regional Tour with .

You to the left and I to the right,
For the ways of men must sever-
And it well may be for a day and a night,
But whether we part,
(for our ways are past our knowing),
A pledge from the heart to its fellow heart,
On the ways we all are going!
Here's to luck!
For we know not where we are going. ~Richard Hovey

Located in the Uaddara Barracks in Kumasi, the Kumasi Fort and Military Museum is one of few military museums in Africa. Built in 1820 by Asantehene Osei Tutu Kwamina, the resembles the coastal forts built by the colonist.
Receiving devastating damage by British forces in 1874, the Fort was rebuilt in 1897 from granite and red soil carried to Kumasi from Cape Coast.
During the Ashanti rebellion of 1900, 29 Britons were trapped in the Fort when it was surrounded by Ashanti warriors in the War of the Golden Stool, a rebellion led by the QueenMother of Ejisu, Yaa Asantewaa.
The Fort served as a temporary prison for Yaa Asantewa before her forced exile in the Seychelles.
The Fort was converted into a Museum by the British Colonial
Government.

Okomfo Anokye was an Akuapem Priest, Statesman and Lawmaker in the late 17th Century who is credited as a cofounder of the Ashanti Empire. His Mother, Yaa Anobea was from the Ashanti Agona tribe. Legend has it that at the time of his birth, Anokye’s palms were stuck together. Later, when his palms finally split apart, it is said that two totem poles were drawn out of them. His Ancestral home is located opposite the Awukugua Chief’s Palace, and in his shrine located nearby, are two palm trees, one of which has his footprints on it from when he walked up the tree without the use of his hands. After coming to the Asantehene’s aid against the Denkyira Empire, King Osei Tutu gave land to settle on. This land was named Nzema. According to oral tradition, after the Ashanti defeated the Denkyira, Anokye called for a Golden Stool from heaven to land on Osei Tutu's lap. This stool became the unifying symbol of the Ashantis, and indeed when the stool was seized from the Ashantis by the British, led to a huge rebellion, the War of the Golden Stool, or the Yaa Asantewa War. Okomfo Anokye is often compared to the Wizard Merlin, who drove a sword in stone and prophesied that only one man would be able to draw the sword and become King of Camelot. Unlike his European counterpart however, Okomfo Anokye drove his sword into the earth and prophesied that NO ONE would ever draw it forth. It is said that he did this as a symbol of unity between the Nzema and the Ashanti following an oath preventing Ashantis from fighting the Nzema and allowing intermarriages between the two tribes with a single plantain as dowry. The sword is on display in Kumasi, at the Okomfo Anokye Sword site, where till date, no one has successfully drawn the blade. The Sword Site is one of several stops when you call on to .
