An Easter Reminder about Chocolate 🍫 🐰

Chocolate is very dangerous for dogs and can be life threatening. The toxicity of chocolate depends on the dog’s weight, type of chocolate as well as the amount the dog digests.Theobromine, a main ingredient in chocolate which although for humans is easy to digest, for our canine friends, not so much.

There are various levels of theobromine in different types of chocolate. Milk and white chocolate have the lowest levels, while dark and cooking chocolate have the highest. Less than 60g of dark chocolate may be enough to poison a 16kg dog.

Symptoms of chocolate poisoning

👉 Vomiting

👉 diarrhoea

👉 Rapid breathing

👉 Increased heart rate

👉 Low blood pressure

👉 Seizures

👉 Cardiac arrest

👉 Weakness

‼️ If you think that your pet has chocolate poisoning, get in touch with your vet IMMEDIATELY.‼️

There is no definitive cure for chocolate poisoning and treatment will usually be based on damage limitation, this sometimes includes inducing vomiting to limit the amount of theobromine that can get into your pet’s system, so please be careful.

Watch out for other Easter treats which have xylitol and also, hot cross buns, which contain raisins which are also very dangerous dogs.

Well that’s it for 2023. Alfie has been on watch duty since we adopted him in April so he is taking a well earned Christmas Break. There is a deceased dog (lurcher) just outside of Garrafrauns. Finder took the collar off but no name or ID and unfortunately not chipped. The dog was taken to Glenamaddy vets.

"Hi, my dog Vini is missing for more than a week now (since 13.07) and I am desperate, can't find him anywhere. He went missing from around the house, Glenhest co Mayo. He is a whippet mix, tan with darker tripes, 4 white paws and white chest and his right hind leg is deformed due to an older injury. I can send you photos of him...he is chipped and was wearing his collar too"
