Anyone who knows me is well aware of my deep love for bull breeds ❤️ Given the enormous amount of bull breeds currently in rescue, and the current discussion here in Ireland on banning certain breeds, I will be offering discounted rates on behaviour/training support sessions for people who have adopted a bull breed from a rescue. Lots of people have been asking for video sources for muzzle training with our dogs. I've had a look around at some existing content and I thought the attached one from Battersea Dogs was the best.

We need to start thinking (postively) about the use of muzzles - it's about looking after our dogs (and ignore anyone who says differently). Selecting the correct type, size are very important and there's plenty of options (including cool colours and designs) available. Comfort and safety are the key elements to selecting a muzzle.

Let’s talk about MUZZLES !!!
My favourite way to keep everyone safe 💪🏼

🤔 Lets face it, I cannot walk around with a bubble surrounding me and the dogs, no matter how tempting that sounds 🙈

I have 4 dogs 🐾🐾🐾🐾and two are muzzle trained, and the other two (yes even my chihuahua) will be wearing a muzzle when needed!
I support them wearing them confidently and happy to pop their snout into the muzzle.

For anyone who is thinking of taking the step to muzzle train- I can post videos of me getting the dogs used to the muzzle and how to incorporate positive steps to success.

Why do my dogs wear a muzzle?

🐕🐕 I have two restricted breed dogs, so it is the law
🐕‍🦺 I have a “super power” nose dog, who likes to eat 💩
🐶 I have a 2.6kg chihuahua who gets frightened at the vet and can nip when getting his shots

All different size dogs can wear muzzles and for all different reasons 😘

🐾 the muzzle does not define your dog
🐾 muzzles are not for “bad dogs”
🐾 what other people think of you, is none of your business
🐾 there are SO MANY beautiful muzzle options out there, you can absolutely find one that suits your dog

It's totally uplifting to see the sun 🌞 shining, and here's to a fabulous summer ahead ! For all of us handlers, now is the time to plan ahead to enjoy mantrailing in some dry, warm weather but also keeping our K9 partners safe. When we’re mantrailing, only one dog works at a time (to reduce distractions during training, gives space to other dogs). We typically will have our dog in the vehicle when not working.

Some things to consider if you’re going to a mantrailing workshop over the summer:
- Aluminet™ shade cover for your car. These are very effective.
- Reflective car visors for your windows (front and rear, side options available too).
- Sunshade socks for your windows.
- Dog window lattice for car windows – particularly for those who have an escape artist to manage.
- Fit your car with a dog guard or use a tailgate car boot lock so that you can leave the boot open to provide additional ventilation through your car (while maintaining security)
- Options for bringing plenty of water, and a bowl (plenty of collapsible bowls available if space is a challenge)
- Dog cooling mat. Freeze the night before and pack into your cooler bag/box if you have a journey.
- Dog cooling coat
- Fan (USB, battery powered options are available). Top tip: Feel a bottle of water and stand it in front of the fan for even cooler air circulation.
- Sunscreen for your dog (particularly if they are white, have white tipped ears or thin/shaved coats). There are pet specific sunscreens for dogs (and cats and other animals!). Be careful using non-pet specific sunscreen as if ingested, these can be toxic – ask your vet for options.
- On warmer days, bringing a collapsible crate (and aluminetcover) is an option. We can bring the dogs in under the woods, where it is cooler. It is likely your instructor will contact you if the weather is expected to be very hot to either reschedule the workshop or move to earlier/later to avoid peak temperatures.
- Talk to your instructor if you are concerned about the weather.

Plan now – when we get to the core summer months – there will be little to no stock available.

A few reflections on an amazing 6 full-on days of Mantrailing seminars:
- I’ve learnt loads (and have a lot more to learn!)
- We have a wonderful mantrailing community
- There are different methods from which to learn and it’s important to get exposure to multiple methods, and figure out your own training path.
- My biggest learning is how important the laying of the trail is! Experienced trail-layers are really important.
- Now that it’s over (for now), my feet really hurt!

Thanks to everyone who made these days happen, the phenomenal instructors, the fantastic venues and all the particpating mantrailing handler teams, who made these days full of fun!

Last but not least - to my spotty partners in crime 👣🐾🐾
And now, it’s back to work!
