Approximately 60% of your dogs body weight is carried through the front end and is responsible for braking, landing after jumps and turning quickly.

In sporting and agility dogs, majority of injuries occur in the front end due to it not being strong enough to withstand the forces that go through it. 🏋️‍♀️

Physio and targeted exercise prescription can help build up the strength which in turn will reduce the occurrence of injuries!

With the colder weather setting in, we need to be mindful that it takes its toll on our pets joints just like it does to ours.

Here a few things to think about 🤔

🥗 Watching their weight - The cold, wet and windy weather puts everyone off exercising, but with less exercise comes added body weight. This puts extra strain through their joints causing discomfort. Help your dog stay at a healthy weight through the winter.

🏃‍♀️Warm up before exercise - If you got up off the sofa and went straight outside and ran without warming your joints and muscles up, you would certainly be feeling stiffness and discomfort through out your body. The same applies to our furry friends. Make sure you give them a good 10minute walk on the lead before letting them have a run and play. This will help reduce the risk of injury.

🏋️‍♀️Keep them as strong as possible - Joints need support from muscles so they stay stabilised, which in turn will prevent joint damage. Incorporate some strength training in to your dogs weekly exercise plan to help build up those weaker muscles and protect unstable joints.

💊Joint supplements - Think about adding in a good quality supplement that will help support your dogs joint health. Speak to you Vet or send us a message and I'll be happy to direct you to some great supplements.

This is why I love my job ❤️

This little lady was in a lot of discomfort and struggling to stand for long periods of time. She would loose balance and wobble over.

What happened between the Before and After?

One physio session which entailed deep tissue massage, passive and active range of motion exercises, combined with Laser therapy and Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy.

She will receive regular physiotherapy into her golden years to help her stay happy, healthy and comfortable 🥰

If you are interested in finding out how Physiotherapy can help your golden oldie, please reach out via DM or on 0833449910.

Balance Pods ⚖️🫛

Balance pods are incorporated into physio sessions to improve limb awareness and balance.

🐾 We can see if your dog is bearing weight through one leg more than the other
🐾 When the front paws are on the pods, there is more weight through the hind legs (vice Versa when the hind paws are on the pods)
🐾The texture of the pods provides sensory feed back through the paws
🐾Through different exercises, such as weight shifting, we can activate different muscles to help improve balance and stability.

We always try to make the sessions fun and interactive for both your dog and yourself 😃

…..to name a few!

If you have any questions, please send us a DM and we will be happy to help 😃

How does your dog sit? 🐶

There are several factors that may cause your dog to have a 'Sloppy' sit, and it doesn't always mean they are in pain.

Here are a few:
🔹 Conformation - long backs and dwarfism can make it uncomfortable for some breeds to sit square.
🔹Fatigue - If your dog adopts a sloppy sit occasionally, particularly after a long exercise session, this is generally nothing to worry about.
🔹 The surface - if the ground is wet, hot or cold, your dog may not want to perch their bum down.
🔹 Musculoskeletal issues - some dogs develop issues with their hips, knees and backs which cause pain when sitting, making it uncomfortable to sit 'square'.

🍀 Luckily, through physiotherapy, we can educate and help our dogs sit 'square' by strengthening the supportive muscles around the hind legs and re-educating the nervous system.

However if your dog suddenly starts to adopt a 'sloppy' sit regularly, Your dog should be checked by your veterinarian to ensure there are no underlying issues.

This lovely little lady is receiving Laser therapy for Conservative management of a partial cruciate rupture and hip pain.

She receives weekly physio to help manage pain, relieve compensatory muscle soreness and an at home exercise plan to encourage her to use the affected limb.

Once pain is under control, we can start adding in exercises to build muscle around the stifle and hip for support.

Her owner very kindly let me share these photos of her during and after her session 🐶💤

🐶 Pet·Performance·Physio works under Veterinary Referral to ensure the safety, accuracy, and holistic care of animals.

🩺 It is stated under the Veterinary Surgery (Exemptions) Order (1962) that any treatment by physiotherapy given to an animal by a person must be under the direction of a veterinary surgeon.

✨However, new guidance was released in November 2020. Found in Chapter 19 of the supporting guidance to the 'Code of Professional Conduct', sets out the existing rules for musculoskeletal treatment of illness, disease or pathology, and clarifies that 'healthy animals', i.e not currently under veterinary care, do not require a veterinary referral for maintenance care.

🫱🏻🫲🏻By collaborating with veterinarians, we can provide appropriate treatments that are tailored to the unique needs of each animal and contribute to a holistic approach to animal health and well-being.

🐶 Dog arthritis, also known as canine osteoarthritis 🦴

It's a common condition that involves the gradual breakdown of cartilage, which is the protective tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. As the cartilage deteriorates, the bones begin to rub against each other, leading to pain, inflammation, and limited mobility.

Physiotherapy can play a crucial role in managing and improving the quality of life for dogs with arthritis.

1. Pain Management: Manual therapy, massage, and acupuncture, can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with arthritis. These therapies stimulate blood flow, release tension in muscles, and promote the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body.

2. Range of Motion Exercises: Controlled and gentle range of motion exercises help maintain flexibility in the affected joints. These exercises can help prevent further stiffness and promote better joint function.

3. Strengthening Exercises: Physiotherapists design specific exercises to strengthen the muscles around arthritic joints. Stronger muscles provide better support to the joints and help compensate for the loss of cartilage.

4. Weight Management: Excess weight puts additional stress on the joints, exacerbating the symptoms of arthritis. Physiotherapists can provide guidance on appropriate exercise and dietary management to help control weight.

5. Home Exercise Programs: Physiotherapists can design customised exercise programs that owners can perform with their dogs at home, ensuring a consistent routine of therapeutic activities.

6. Education and Support: Physiotherapists educate pet owners about arthritis management, including proper techniques for handling and exercising their dogs, as well as strategies to monitor the progression of the condition.

A combined approach of veterinary care, medication, and physiotherapy can significantly enhance the comfort and well-being of arthritic dogs, helping them lead a more active and pain-free life.
