Policy Advocacy in Animal Welfare
Animals, have been granted equal rights as human beings, by the Constitution of India. The Government of India has allocated huge amounts of money to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and various other animal welfare organizations to conduct sterilization and vaccination programmes across Delhi NCR, however there has not been any progress in this regard. We have been trying to understand the utilization of allocated funds in this regard through RTI and parliamentary questions. We believe in action. A group of ordinary citizens came together and started an entity to focus on strategic, high-level initiatives such as policy advocacy with the Government to review and amend existing norms and laws for animal cruelty and safety in India, and introduce new laws, which are badly needed in our country. We have been closely working with bureaucrats, parliamentarians, Ministers and other high level โinfluencersโ to bring animal welfare into mainstream policy making and if possible, create a separate ministry for the same. Our focus is to create RTI questions and make the Government responsible As a group of individuals, we are also undertaking the construction of 2 animals shelters, and an integrated, multi-specialty animal care facility that will house an animal shelter, an animal hospital, a boarding and other medical foster facilities, to take care of injured and special needs animals. We have till date, worked on several animal cruelty cases and collaborated with the police, animal rescuers, and concerned animal care organizations to resolve each cruelty case and bring the perpetrator to law. Some of our other innovative initiatives in feeding and medical care of animals include: 1. Collaborating with hotels and restaurants in Delhi to utilize their left over food for feeding stray animals. 2. Collaborating with juice vendors to utilize their fruit and vegetable peels for feeding cows and buffaloes 3. Collaborating with underprivileged households / low income groups to em-panel them as paid fosters - the women of the household is trained to care for the injured animal, and she can earn through this activity 4. Collaborating with ATM guards and on-board them as โFriends of Animalsโ - Incentivizing them to take care of the animals around their ATM 5. Collaborating with tea vendors to install water bowls in front of their stalls and incentivize them to take complete responsibility of filling and cleaning the water bowls daily 6. Collaborating with Old Age homes and Orphanages to adopt stray animals and provide them shelter in their premises against the rains, heat and cold.
