The scaly-breasted lorikeet (Trichoglossus chlorolepidotus) is an Australian lorikeet found in woodland in eastern Australia. The common name aptly describes this bird, which has yellow breast feathers broadly edged with green that look like scales.

The scaly-breasted lorikeet is about 23 cm (9.1 in) long. The crown and sides of head are emerald-green slightly tinged with blue, while the feathers of the back of the neck and throat and breast are yellow, broadly edged with green, giving scaly appearance. The tail is green with the base of the outer tail-feathers marked with orange-red. The lower flanks, thighs and undertail-coverts green are strongly marked with yellow, while the underwing-coverts are orange-red. They have orange-red eyes, and their bills (beaks) are dark coral-red. Their legs are generally grey-brown.

These birds nest in hollow trees, usually high above the ground, with a layer of wood dust serving as a mattress at the bottom. They usually lay two eggs, rarely three; they are white, oval, and about 26 X 20 mm. Incubation lasts about 25 days. Males spend time in the nest hollow, but apparently do not share in the incubation. Both parents feed the young, which leave the nest six to eight weeks after hatching.

We welcome a beautiful clutch from 4 different bloodlines of Suncheeks in our aviary. We did lose few chicks due to the changing weather conditions but still we managed to successfully raise quite a lovely bunch of babies. Also it was a wonderful experience to have 100% efficiency on one particular time by all of the pairs almost a couple of months back to witness multiple hatching in a moment.

The Red Lory (Eos bornea)

It is a species of parrot in the family Psittaculidae. It is mostly red and all the plumage of the upper body is red. There are red, blue, and black marks on the back and wings, and the tail is reddish-brown with blue under-tail coverts. The beak is orange and the legs are grey. The red lory in particular is endemic to the Moluccas and surrounding islands in Indonesia. Its natural habitats are tropical moist lowland forests and tropical mangrove forests.

The Red Lories are very vocal and extremely energetic type of lories just like what they are supposed to be. The striking colours can take the breath away of anyone looking at them. They are quite aggressive and territorial according to my observation over the year. Hybridisation is a very common occurrence due to lack of awareness and exposure in understanding their subspecies. Hope you enjoy the lovely album of a pair of Red Lory in our aviary, we tend to provide an age gap of minimum 1 year in the pair where the male is older for all of our pairs; we found a better bonding and quicker acceptance when paired like this though it is entirely our way and not any suggestion.

The Dusky Lory (Pseudeos fuscata)

It is found in New Guinea and the offshore islands of Batanta, Salawati and Yapen. It is short-tailed parrot about 25 cm (10 in) long. It is mainly brown and has a whitish back and rump. It has two colour phases; the band across the upper chest together with its abdomen are either yellow or orange. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical mangrove forests, and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest.

We are really blessed to own such an exquisite variety that is very popular in the world of Lories. These birds are noisier than other lories when humans come in close contact. They are always energetic and generally consumes more food if compared to other varieties of their size. The actual colours of Dusky can only be witnessed under a direct sunlight where they look no less than a glowing dark entity. Here is a glimpse of our beautiful pair posing for us.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year 2024 🇮🇳

The Chattering Lory (Lorius garrulus)

The Chattering Lory is quite a large sized lory around 12 inches or more long. It is a forest-dwelling parrot endemic to North Maluku, Indonesia. It is considered vulnerable. It is mostly red with an all-red head and an orange beak. The eyerings are grey and the irises are orange-red. The wings are mainly green and the angle of the wing is yellow. Its thighs are green. The tail is tipped with dark green. It has dark grey legs.

Chatterings are unique and they portray a much different behaviour when compared to other lories. These beautiful birds are much less cuddly together as a pair, they showcase an aggression but are extremely fond of exploration but know their boundaries which many don't. They have a beautiful whistling tone that totally segregates them from any other making it an exclusive note to distinguish them far off. They can be easily taught to speak just like any other big Parrot with a top clarity speech, obviously there are limitations to that range. They are an absolute dream bird for anyone to house in their aviary or as a companion pet. They just know how to entertain their owner and their partner at the same time. But I do believe breeding them is extremely challenging due to their higher maturity period and establishing a bonded pair by getting two individual semi-matured birds is the most difficult thing we have ever done, it's absolutely not like bringing two birds and putting it in a cage.

Hope you enjoy the few glimpses that we were able to capture. May this winter be as beautiful as they are.

The Red Breasted Black Capped Lory (Lorius lory erythrothorax)

They are found in New Guinea and adjacent smaller islands. It is a colourful and relatively robust lory {31 cm (12 in)}. There are seven subspecies, all with green wings, red heads and body around the wing, a black cap, grey-black cere, yellow underwings, and blue legs and belly. Most also have a blue nape and mantle (area between wings on the back).

Black Capped Lories have a lovely nature and a very sweet voice in comparison to the other lories. They are extremely human friendly and curious just like any other species from the lorini family. They require a lot of enrichment to keep themselves busy as they are intelligent, highly energetic and fun personalities to go with. Their characteristics include extravagance and uniqueness with extreme intake of food when I compare it with the other species that are housed.

These robust and stocky parrots are strong and endure most common conditions with ease. Provided you prevent basic threats like too high or too low temperatures, drafty and damp places.
