The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology (or Croc Bank) was the brain child of the legendary Romulus Whitaker and a handful of like-minded conservation visionaries who began work on the facility in 1976, in a desperate effort to save India’s dwindling crocodilian populations. Today, after more than 30 formidable years of cutting edge science and grassroots education, the Croc Ban

k remains a world leader in the field of frontline conservation and the preservation of natural landscapes. The Croc Bank currently consists of a large reptile park near Chennai, Southern India, and several field projects located throughout the subcontinent reaching as far afield as the Nicobar Islands. The zoo sees close to half a million visitors per year making it one of the most popular tourist attractions along the famous East Coast Road.

A few words from our volunteer, Alina Gala:
Croc Bank is not just a place; it is an experience. From day one, I knew this was going to be something that I will never forget. All the Akkas and Annas were so helpful and even though we had a language barrier, it was easy to understand them because of how welcoming and kind they were. As someone with no prior experience, I have learnt so many new things. Whether it was assisting with feeding sessions, cleaning the enclosures or simply observing the daily routines of these remarkable animals, every moment was a revelation. I will never forget the daily beach visits with my fellow volunteers, it was the most wholesome end to our work day.
I sincerely thank the staff members for allowing me to play a small role in your remarkable mission.

Zoo Outreach organized an incredible three-day workshop with the theme 'Art for Conservation and Climate Crisis', focusing on scientific illustration and led by experts like Stephen and Luci Nash.

Among the participants was our project coordinator, Indira Naidu ( ), who connected with a few fellow artists passionate about conservation. From diving into the intricacies of pen and ink techniques to exploring various other artistic methods, the experience proved incredibly helpful. Art possesses the power to inspire change, and through this workshop, we're honing our skills and contributing to preserving our planet's biodiversity.

Please stay tuned as all the artworks will be shown in an exhibition during the upcoming week of August in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

If you're planning to visit the Croc Bank this summer, try and make it soon after it opens (9 am) or around 4.00 pm, which will give you an hour before it closes. During the hottest part of the day the crocs prefer to be in the water and are difficult to spot. We don't want you to go away disappointed!

A few words from our volunteer Antony:
Engaging in volunteer work at the Crocodile Bank in Chennai proved to be an enlightening scientific endeavour. The experience was truly extraordinary, providing unparalleled insights into reptilian behaviour. Prior to this, I had never encountered such a unique opportunity to study these creatures up close. The controlled environment allowed for safe and detailed observation of both snakes and crocodiles, contributing to a deeper understanding of their behaviours and interactions. Furthermore, the conducive atmosphere, coupled with the amiable demeanour of the staff, fostered an environment conducive to scientific inquiry. Amidst this enriching experience, the accommodation and sustenance provided were commendable, ensuring a seamless immersion into the world of herpetology.

A few words from Tobias, an ARRS visitor:
Thank you ARRS for giving me a truly special experience in the wild. We had so many interesting animal encounters such as finding birds in the night like the oriental scops owl and the oriental dwarf kingfisher and even primates such as the elusive slender loris. I was also lucky enough to see 5 species of snakes including the king cobra during a rescue mission. The whole team was amazing and taught me a lot about the unique species of this biodiversity hotspot on our many birding and herping walks. The ethics they have for nature really surprised me. When we weren't looking for animals, we enjoyed the beautiful waterfalls around with the other guests. I'm sure that I will return very soon.

Over the past two years, we have collaborated closely with the National Centre for Disease Control of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to draft a multi-sectoral policy aimed at reducing snakebites. And on 12th March, our efforts finally paid off as the NCDC successfully launched the National Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Snakebite Envenoming (NAPSE). This phased approach will help address several existing challenges and serve as a reference document for states to form their own action plans. We are proud to have played an instrumental role in developing this plan, particularly in highlighting the importance of prevention models. Seeing our pictures in the document and launch presentation was a delightful moment for us. We know that the work doesn't end here, and the NCDC will continue to work towards strengthening efforts by state governments, researchers, and NGOs. Together, we can make a difference in mitigating snakebites in India. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who dedicated years to making NAPSE a reality.

Rithan’s experience:
We always say nature never fails to surprise us. Here's one such incident that amazed me.
On a sunny day, I found myself wandering around the areca plantation at ARRS. My goal was simple: to catch a glimpse of flying lizards. As I ventured a little deep into the plantation, a web drew my attention. At first glance, it appeared to be nothing more than a collection of debris caught in the breeze. But something about it piqued my curiosity. On a closer look, I realized it was a tiny spider perfectly camouflaged. I took a blurry shot out of excitement and sent it to my friend Jithesh bhai to identify. He answered it's a debris orb weaver, a spider skilled in adorning its web's centre with debris for camouflage and protection against predators. What an incredible tactic! I was reminded once again, that even in the most unexpected of places, there lies beauty everywhere, waiting to be discovered.

The Tilapia fish is a freshwater fish that is commonly found inhabiting shallow streams, ponds, rivers, and lakes. These fish are also the feed of choice for the crocodiles at MCBT. Some of these fishes, however, do survive, like this one that was found in the underwater gharial enclosure. It is observed to be feeding off the algae on the gharial’s tail.
The turtles in the underwater gharial enclosure survive along with the Gharfield-the gharial, but do not worry because they are not his prey of choice. Instead, he is commonly found playing with them as observed in this picture where he is seated on one of the turtles!

We're happy to share that we recently held a Snake Rescuer Training Workshop at Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary in Alibag, Maharashtra. Led by Ajay Giri, Field Director of ARRS and an expert in safe handling, the workshop lasted two days and had 30 participants from the Forest Department, and some snake rescuers.

A big thanks to the Maharashtra Forest Department and our local partner, the Organization for Wildlife Studies, for their support. We hope everyone who attended will use what they learned to keep themselves safe and to help snakes too.

Rithan’s experience:

Tobias and I found ourselves walking back to base with a sense of disappointment. We had no sign of the slender loris we hoped to spot. Let’s check out the jeep trail, he suggested. I agreed, figuring it couldn’t hurt to give it one last shot before calling it a day. We made our way along the familiar path, and suddenly, I froze. What is it? he whispered. My hands pointed towards a tiny, vibrant creature. It was an oriental dwarf kingfisher. Oh my god, what insane beauty. No wonder they are called colour bombs! We held our breath, not wanting to disturb the magnificent creature before us. In that moment, time seemed to stand still, and all the disappointments of the day melted away.
