FIRST VETERINARY PROFESSIONAL in India to be certified by US-based .

Another feather in my cap!

This course was such a great learning experience and I have been able to successfully apply these tools while attending to patients, thus creating a 'fear free' experience.

WHAT NOT TO DO IF YOUR DOG IS AFRAID OF FIRECRACKERS:

#4

Do not blame yourself. Avoid getting anxious in anticipation of the loud firecrackers. Dogs have the beautiful ability to sense our emotional state.

Many pet parents feel overwhelmed, guilty and very anxious seeing their dogs in distress. Be kind to yourself and seek the appropriate help for your fearful dog.

WHAT NOT TO DO IF YOUR DOG IS AFRAID OF FIRECRACKERS:

#3

Do not force your already fearful dog to face the cracker noise. This will only increase his/her levels of fear, anxiety and stress.

Behavioural programs such as systemic desensitization and conditioning need to be done much in advance to the festive season.

WHAT NOT TO DO IF YOUR DOG IS AFRAID OF FIRECRACKERS:

#2

Do not yell/punish your dog for being afraid of firecrackers. Also do not punish/shout at him/her for any fear related behaviours such as urinating/defecating in the house.

Unfortunately at this time, an animal has no control over his/her anxiety. Punishing, shouting and yelling will only make the anxiety WORSE.

WHAT NOT TO DO IF YOUR DOG IS AFRAID OF FIRECRACKERS

#1
Do not force your dog to go out for walks during or even after the crackers.

For toileting concerns provide appropriate areas at home where your dog can relieve him or herself.

If your dog wants to be at home, allow them to be in an appropriate place which they chose where they feel safe.

Diwali is around the corner and unfortunately that means fire crackers and noises are too!

During this time many of our pets experience extreme levels of stress due to these loud noises. This is exhibited by signs such as restlessness and pacing, hiding, trembling, panting, vocalizing, house soiling, etc.

If your pet does experience this, do contact us for tips and/or medications which will help in reducing this distress.

A cat's core area must contain:

* seperate feeding and litter spaces
*a place where they can rest and hide preferably at a height (such as shown in the picture)
* an area for play
*a scratch post

In a multicat household each individual cat must have access to his/her own individual core area.

Many behaviour problems arise due to the lack of access to such an area.

What does your cat's home environment look like?

Not only physical exercise but mental stimulation and social interactions are very important for the health of your pet.

Mental stimulation can be provided with the use of food mazes, toys, games, obstacle courses, etc

Dogs and even cats, are social in nature and interacting with them daily via play is important in creating a loving, and trusting bond!

๐Ÿ‘THE ANSWER IS YES, certain fruits are ok for dogs to eat IN MODERATION. Remember dogs are CARNIVORES and the require a good quality protein diet well-balanced with carbohydrates and fats.

๐Ÿ‡Some fruits you can offer include apples, cucumbers, pears, papaya, strawberries and blueberries. Make sure to remove seeds and skin!๐Ÿ‰

Some behaviours in our pets are absolutely 'normal/neurotypical' of that particular species.

Conversely, some behaviours are not normal and are 'maldaptive' and require a redirected learning. Unfortunately, pet parents just accept them as they are.

That behaviour which gets you concerned about your dog/ cat, which category does it fall into?

Not sure?

Super excited to have just completed 2 of 8 modules in this course of Behaviour Medicine from the University of Sydney. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding into the minds of dogs and cats and I already feel whatever I am learning is helping me in my practice!

And it finally caught me, after almost two years of managing to steer clear of this horrid virus. I'm grateful for my health during these two years, inspite of having worked everyday through BOTH lockdowns, even on sundays. Here's to good health!
