RESQ CHARITABLE TRUST

A Eurasian Eagle Owl was reported on the RESQ Wildlife Helpline one morning. It was trapped in a quarry, entangled in the one thing that spells doom for all avians; manja or kite string. The sharp friction from the strings had cut away at the flesh between his wing feathers and had even severed one of his delicate bones clean in half. The poor creature was dehydrated and in a state of shock when it was rescued, indicating that it had been lying helpless like this for at least 3 to 4 days. He was breathing so hard that we didn’t even know if it would survive until we reached the RESQ Centre.

Once we reached, the vets immediately worked on stabilising it, put it under gas anesthesia and began cutting away the manja string carefully. We snipped the string at several places and removed them in smaller pieces, so as to avoid any more friction along the skin and feathers. The awful cut along the wing was cleaned and dressed. After maintaining the owl on adequate pain relief and antibiotics, we are happy to say that the broken bone was surgically pinned successfully yesterday. This beautiful and majestic creature still needs a lot of post operative care and we have to be absolutely certain that he can regain complete function of the affected wing. The road to recovery is going to be a hard one for this bird, but we have our fingers crossed. It is strangely ironic that we want good fortune for an owl; a bird which is often associated as an omen of bad luck.

Makar Sankranti marks the end of the winter solstice and traditionally kites were flown in the sky to indicate that. We have Google reminder and calendars to do that now, must we put a kite in the sky just for fun and risk the lives of hundreds of birds who believe they’re flying where it is safe for them?

Let’s pledge to not fly kites ourselves this year and more importantly educate those around us to not do so either!

A safe Holi for pets and strays

1)Avoid taking pets out during Holi so they are not subjected to the toxic colors or balloons. Street animals too should be left alone and not subjected to the colors or water. The non-natural, toxic colors that contain chemicals, lead, metal oxides, mica and pieces of glass can cause a host of problems, including skin allergies.

2) Cats and dogs have a tendency to lick themselves and thus can ingest the harmful contents from the colors that might lead to vomiting and also poisoning.

3) Colors can also enter the eyes or the ears and lead to infections. This could also cause respiratory problems and lung infections.

4) Water balloons can cause injuries to delicate body parts of the animal such as the eyes.

5) Bhang or any alcoholic or intoxicating substance is on the prohibited list for animals and should not be given
to them.

6) If the color has got on to your pet or street animals’ coat, do not remove it with any spirits or paint-remover but wash it with water and mild dog shampoo or consult a veterinarian.

7) We love our sweets during festivities and so do our pets but it is better to give them in moderation.

8) Street dog carriers and feeders can provide dogs with fresh water, especially during this festival so that they do not drink and ingest water from puddles containing colored water.

If you see any above-mentioned symptoms in your pet or a street dog in your area, do contact your veterinarian urgently or any animal welfare NGO in your area, so that the animal can be treated immediately .
