🐾 Why Microchipping Your Pet is Essential 🐾

A sweet cat has been in the news recently after being involved in an accident involving a car. New Era Vets helped save her life, however, as she is not microchipped they had no way of contacting her owners. She is now with us at the JSPCA while the search continues for her family.

As pet owners, we all want to ensure the safety and well-being of our furry friends. One of the most effective ways to do this is by microchipping them. Here’s why microchipping is so important:

How to Ensure Your Pet’s Microchip is Effective:
Register the Microchip: Make sure to register your pet’s microchip with a national pet recovery database.
Keep Information Updated: Always update your contact information if you move or change phone numbers.
Regular Checks: Have your vet check the microchip during regular visits to ensure its functioning properly.
Microchipping is a simple, affordable, and effective way to protect your pet. It’s a small step that can make a huge difference in ensuring your furry friend’s safety and your peace of mind.

The JSPCA offer microchipping to cats and dogs for only £10!
Call 01534724331 to book your appointment today!

🐾 Happy International Dog Day! 🐾

Today, we celebrate our loyal, loving, and furry friends who bring so much joy into our lives. Whether they’re wagging their tails, giving us those adorable puppy eyes, or simply being there for us, dogs truly are man’s best friend.

International Dog Day, observed every year on August 26th, is a special day to honour all dogs, regardless of their breed, size, or age. This day was founded in 2004 by pet lifestyle expert and animal advocate Colleen Paige to raise awareness about the importance of adoption and to celebrate the unconditional love that dogs bring into our lives.

Here are a few ways you can celebrate this pawsome day:

Adopt, Don’t Shop: Consider giving a forever home to a dog in need. There are countless dogs in shelters waiting for a loving family.

Volunteer: Spend some time at your local animal shelter. Your help can make a big difference in the lives of these animals.

Donate: Support animal shelters and rescue organizations with donations of food, supplies, or funds.

Pamper Your Pup: Treat your dog to a special day filled with their favourite activities, whether it’s a long walk, a fun game of fetch, or some delicious treats.

Let’s make this International Dog Day a memorable one for our furry friends. Share your favourite dog photos and stories with us using the hashtag . 🐶❤️

🐾 Happy International Blind Dog Day! 🐾

Today, we celebrate the incredible courage, resilience, and companionship of blind dogs. These loyal and loving animals navigate the world with an extraordinary sense of determination, proving that sight is not the only way to experience life.

International Blind Dog Day, observed annually on August 23rd, shines a spotlight on these inspiring pets and raises awareness about the challenges and joys of living with and caring for a blind dog. This day is not just about honouring blind dogs but also about encouraging people to adopt, care for, and support dogs with visual impairments.

Here are a few ways you can celebrate this special day:

Adopt a Visually Impaired Dog: Consider giving a forever home to a blind dog. They may need a bit more care initially, but they adapt quickly and can live happy, fulfilling lives.

Donate: Support organisations that help blind dogs with donations of food, supplies, or funds.

Share the Love: Post pictures and stories of your blind dog on social media using the hashtag to spread awareness and celebrate their unique abilities.

Let’s make this International Blind Dog Day a memorable one for our furry friends. Every dog, regardless of their abilities, deserves love and a chance to thrive. 🐶❤️

🐾🔍 Happy Check that Chip Day! 🔍🐾

Today, we highlight the importance of microchipping our beloved pets and ensuring their microchip information is up to date. Microchips significantly increase the chances of reuniting lost pets with their families, but they only work if the registration information is accurate.

Why is this important?

Every year, millions of pets go missing, and only a small percentage are reunited with their owners. Microchipping can change that.
A microchip is a permanent form of identification that cannot be removed or lost like a collar or tag.
Keeping your pet’s microchip information current ensures that if they ever get lost, you can be contacted quickly.
What can you do today?

Check your pet’s microchip information: Make sure all contact details are up to date.
Get your pet microchipped: If your pet isn’t already microchipped, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.
Spread the word: Share this post and encourage other pet owners to check their pet’s microchip information.

Let’s work together to keep our furry friends safe and ensure they always find their way back home. 🏡❤️

Share your pet’s microchip story with the hashtag and help raise awareness!

07/08/2024

Gull nesting season

Every year a number of rooftops in Jersey become home to nesting gulls. Gulls on your roof can become problematic. Early preventative action can save both disruption and money and is considerably less traumatic for the gulls.
All gull species are protected under the Wildlife (Jersey) Law 2021. This means that it is an offence to cause harm or disturbance to the birds, including their young and eggs, or to interfere with their nests when in use or being built, without a licence granted under the law to do so.

What you can do now:
• check your roof for gull activity in the coming weeks especially if gulls have previously nested in your area. Advise your neighbours if you see gulls on their roof.
• take early action if necessary by contacting a licensed controller, like the Environmental Department. Once eggs have hatched the removal of nests will mean killing the chicks. This is not an acceptable long term solution and causes unnecessary distress.
• remove all unintended food sources and protect your rubbish.
• do not feed gulls as it is illegal in most situations and can cause many problems.
• consider long term preventative action to protect your roof to stop nesting- a licensed controller will be able to advise on options.

For further advice on dealing with problem gulls visit Nuisance seagulls (gov.je)

What to do if you find a gull chick
Gull chicks leave the nest at an early stage and it can be common to find a chick on the ground. A parent is likely to be nearby and can be aggressive. An uninjured chick must be left where it is in the care of its own parents.

Do not under any circumstances feed the chick, give it water or handle it, as this will impact on its ability to survive as a wild bird. Gulls are intelligent birds and will quickly ‘imprint’ on humans causing problems for themselves and long-term public safety once released.
If the bird appears to be in danger it should be moved only by a licensed professional.

Injured gulls are best reported to the JSPCA so that we can help them.

07/08/2024

When it comes to bird nests, it’s essential to follow guidelines and protect our feathered friends. Here’s what you need to know:

Vulnerable Period: Birds are most vulnerable during nesting. Any disturbance could harm them or cause parents to abandon their nest, eggs, and young. Nests cannot be moved or destroyed while in use, except under specific licensed circumstances.

Benefits of Leaving Nests: Unless there’s a compelling reason, leaving nests alone can be beneficial:
Some species use nests as roosts outside the breeding season.
They may reuse the same nest the following year.
Buzzards even take over disused crows’ nests.

Help our wildlife by protecting them!
