Barbary Macaque Awareness & Conservation

Barbary Macaque Awareness & Conservation La seule association marocaine de protection du singe Magot. The only Moroccan Association working to protect the Endangered Barbary macaque.
(13)

BMAC uses both social and natural science research techniques to develop and apply practical conservation and development strategies. The majority of these strategies involve awareness raising both locally and nationally to foster an intrinsic rather than an economic value for these unique primates and thus eradicate the demand for the species by the illegal pet trade. Capacity building in areas of macaque habitat is also key in providing alternative livelihood strategies and reducing the financial necessity of capturing infant macaques from the wild.

What better way to celebrate Macaque Week than with a photo of one of the newest macaques on the planet! Barbary macaques are born in the spring so they have the whole summer to grow and learn with the help of their adoptive dads!

We are collecting artwork to be exhibited on the webpage!

"The beauty of macaques - all in one place" online gallery (www.macaquecoalition.com/imw-gallery) showcases not just macaque diversity, personalities, and complexities, but also the human element - the artists, the photographers, the researchers who represent their countries and organizations.

Submit your work now by email: [email protected] or DM us to arrange for your work to be featured! Use art to tell the world that we should see and respect macaques the same way you do.

As winter progresses, we have decided, on the basis of the macaques' body condition, that we will again provision some macaque groups with acorns. We are very grateful to Gaia Nature Fund, The Netherlands, for their support enabling us to buy acorns. The forest is recovering so we only need to feed three groups for a shorter period this winter. Here are Ahmed, Mohamed and Hussain putting up the acorn containers and fitting camera traps so we can monitor the macaques' acorn consumption.

Happy New Year from the BMAC team! We are delighted to begin the year with the news that Folly Farm Adventure Park & Zoo has been working hard to raise money for us with primate cup cakes, primate bingo and monkey ears for the keepers! Huge thanks to everyone who worked very hard to raise some money for Barbary macaque conservation. If your zoo is raising money for us then send us news on your fundraising activities so we can share them here!

Winter has come to Bouhachem but the team are still busy monitoring macaques and collecting acorns to plant more oak trees. It's also mushroom season so the macaques have plenty of a food they really enjoy.

Here's another video from Sian and Lucy's recent trip to Morocco. here Lucy talks about the difficulties of photographing camera shy macaques!

BMAC volunteers, Lucy and Sian have just got back from Morocco where they worked with the field team doing some surveying. They made some videos to give you some idea of what the BMAc team do when in the forest. Here is one of Sian explaining how we count Barbary macaque groups when we get the opportunity. Warning - you don't see much activity but that's Barbary macaque fieldwork in Bouhachem!

A few weeks ago, Dream Village Zoo in Mohamedia invted the BMASc tema to particpate in a "Barbary Macaque Day". Staff from Dream Village produced these great Barbary macaque outlines. Zoo visitors were invited to learn more about the macaques and to sign their names pledging never to keep a pet macaque. We reached around 1,000 people! We are very grateful to Dream Village for their support of Barbary macaque conservation, and to Zoo Vienna for supporting our education officer, Ahmed Chetuan. Ahmed can be seen here telling kids all about macaques.

Did we mention that 2023 is the Year of the Barbary Macaque at GAIAZoo Netherlands!! All funds raised help us help the macaques so if you live close by, make sure you visit. If you don't live nearby why not adopt a GAIAZoo macaque to help a wild one? https://www.gaiazoo.nl/gaia-nature-fund/jaar-van-de-berberaap-2023

The BMAC team were invited to raise awareness about Barbary macaques at a football tournament a couple of weeks ago. The team used our portable education exhibition to tell the participants and audience about Barbary macaques and the threats that face them in the Rif Mountains and elsewhere in Morocco. The competing teams wore BMAC shirts to show their support for us and the macaques! Many thanks to all those involved.

In this new book, BMAC people also headed up a chapter on the impacts of dogs on primates. Dogs kill Barbary macaques in Bouhachem and we think it is an important, but overlooked cause of disturbance and, sometimes, mortality in primates.
