In TPV, patients are prioritised based on the severity of their illness.

What this means is that the more critically ill, or severely injured patients are treated first. This process of determining the urgency of their need for treatment is called TRIAGE.

Due to their urgent manner, this may affect the waiting time despite previously fixed appointments.

Please do be aware of our triage priority levels, that allows us to care for the most critically injured or ill pets first, as a swift intervention usually means a matter of life or death.

We appreciate and thank you for your patience and understanding during these challenging times. As always, our TPV team strives to do our absolute best for you and your pets!

Dear all customers, we are aware of the rising number of Covid cases in Malaysia. Considering the suggestion from our health ministry, our clinic will amend strict rules on wearing a facemask before entering the clinic.

To minimise close contact, we would encourage only one (1) owner to be in the consultation room while the doctor is checking on your pets.

Your kind cooperation will be appreciated.
Let's work together to prevent the spread of Covid infection. 🤝

Thorough cleaning of the ear canals is extremely important for the effective management of otitis externa (ear infection). The debris can hinder the pe*******on of topical agents to the affected tissue requiring treatment, and large deposits may prevent medication from reaching the deeper parts of the horizontal canal.

In normal ears little debris is present and it is composed of keratinocytes (skin cells), cerumen (oily discharge) and some microorganisms ( e.g: bacteria). Retained debris may also contain pro inflammatory material such as microbial by products and toxins as well as mediators released from inflammatory cells that may be present. ( the ear will become red and itchy)

Poster below outline the steps in doing ear cleaning for our furry kids. There are few key points to take note:

⚠️1. Normal ear cleaning solution cannot be use and may potentially cause more harm if injury to ear drum is suspected.

⚠️2. 🐈Cats ear drums are particularly more sensitive than dogs' ones. Otoscopy examination is require to ensure a proper treatment and cleaning being done.

Proper consultation is suggested to ensure we are treating ear infection/ inflammation right without hurting their ear drum that may impair their hearing.

Neonates (animals under 4 weeks of age) and paediatric ( 4 weeks to 6 months of age) patients present particular challenges to nursing care. Hypoglycemia ( low blood glucose); dehydration (not enough fluid in body); hypothermia (low body temperature) and sepsis (infections) are the common factors that reduce the survival rate of kittens. Here are some tips we would like to share on nursing care of an orphaned kitten.

⚠️While we understand furry kids may find it fun to explore the surroundings with their mouth by chewing and munching on anything available and accessible to them, it can be alarming and it posts a risk to their health if they have swallowed something that is indigestible or may probably be toxic to them.

❗Foreign bodies that we have seen in our patients include durian seeds, satay sticks, corn cobs, cloth, socks, towel, battery, waist belt, thread and even needles. Licking and swallowing the thread from curtains can be a dangerous act too!

⭕Keeping furry kids in a safe place, removing objects that post risk of gastrointestinal obstructions or may probably be toxic to them is part of our responsibility as being an owner.

👉Note: Giving an appropriate enrichment in an enclosure or keeping them occupied with activities will be able to help them to kill boredom and minimise the chance of foreign body ingestion.

⚠️ Beware of the possibility of Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) due to improper flipping method

Turning the patient from lying one side to another is crucial to ensure no constant pressured points on the body to prevent formation of bedsore.

However, turning patients in the CORRECT way is also equally important. This is to ensure stomach of the patient will not be turned at its axis at the same time and eventually causing an emergency condition called GDV.

The key point is:
👉 never turn a patient with their legs above. Turn their body with their legs beneath their bodies.

Special thanks to Mellisa Chiew and her family, who are willing to share on how this thing being done appropriately.

⚠️ Beware of abuse of antibiotics

💊Antibiotic is a type of medication being used to control bacteria infection or preventive measure ( prophylaxis) when we are anticipating a possible bacteria infection.🦠

💥However, due to misuse and inappropriate introduction of antibiotics to pets, there is an increase number of cases in which the bacteria has formed resistance towards most commonly used antibiotics.

It is a dangerous trend in which it is not only harmful to the pets, but also making a way to cultivate "superbugs" that is challenging to pet's owner's health especially when it comes to zoonotic diseases.

Our clinic hold a strong policy in which NO antibiotic is allowed to be sold over the counter without a prescription or justification by a veterinarian consultation.

Our job is not only to protect your furry kids but also their family members too ( the owners).

📢🐱There are other possibilities that can cause a cat to have persistent watery eyes😿 and frequent squinting of the eye other than eye infection.

👉One common condition is an inward rolling of upper and/or lower eyelids that we call it Entropion. Irritation from the hairs rubbing on the cornea and conjunctiva can cause chronic conjunctivitis (red eye👁️), and/ or corneal ulceration ( pitting/ injury on the outermost transparent layer of the eye).

These complications can be avoided by early diagnosis of the condition and surgical correction of the eyelid. Prognosis for this condition is good.

Attached are the photos of a cat with the condition that has been through the surgical correction on its lower eye lid. These photos are being shared with the client's permission to allow everyone to know this condition better.

🐕🐈🐾Delivering nutrient to ill patients is crucial to:
1. Prevent further catabolism of lean body mass;
2. Provide energy and nutrients for healing ,&
3. Correction of nutritional deficiencies and imbalance.

❗⚠️🐱When cats stop eating for a while for whatever reason, their stored fat is broken down into fatty acids. These fatty acids are used for energy instead of the usual glucose they get from food. It can cause a condition called hepatic lipidosis (sick liver) and progressively jaundice ( yellow on the skin).

👉 Syringe feeding, nasogastric tube, esophagostomy tube are commonly used in veterinary clinic/ hospital to achieve a proper nutritional support in critically ill patients.
👉Appetite stimulants can be an option for chronic cases like chronic kidney patients or cancer patients.

Attached photos are shared from TPV vet team to allow you to understand on how those tubings look like in the patients for your better understanding.

🐱🐶🐾Mobility issue is one of the most common issues in senior furry kids. We would like to share with you some common items or accessories that we use to help these patients to ease their difficulties in getting up and making every single step.

The examples are as follows: non- slippery rubber mats (available at most hardware shops), anti-slip dashboard mats ( placed on the towels) , 🥾🥾rubber non- slip-sole boots, anti-slip paw pad lotion🐾 and toe- grips.

🧐Different patients may benefit from different accessories that we use. We would encourage clients to share with us your experience as well.

📢Disclaimer: Information above is just a sharing from experience, hopefully able to help the pets in need out there. Does not contain any element of advertising.

Heartworm disease is a potentially fatal, but preventable infection caused by a worm parasite, Dirofilaria immitis. The organism is transmitted by mosquitoes. 🦟🦟🦟

🫀🫁It is a silent disease that can cause an obstructive cardiovascular issue, right- sided heart failure. Its damage to cardiovascular system can be irreversible. Exercise intolerance, coughing, difficulty in breathing or distended abdomen can be the signs associated with it. Any apparently healthy dog may have heartworm infestation unnoticeably as long as they are not on any preventative medication.

🇲🇾Malaysia is a tropical country with mosquitoes!🦟 Heartworm prevention is crucial to ensure your furry kids grow healthily. Video below shows the damage of heartworms to their cardiovascular system once microfilarias enter the blood stream.

Video below adopted from American Heartworm Society website.

A more in-depth overview of heartworm life cycle and prevention. Useful for students, new staff, and veterinary professionals.

Bedsore can be a very common problem for pets who are experiencing mobility issues. Bedsores also called pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers. Bedsores are injuries to skin and underlying tissue resulting from prolonged pressure on the skin.

Bedsore most often develop on skin that covers bony areas of the body, such as shoulders and hips. Turning patients often to rotate the sides of the body lies, offering soft bedding to absorb pressures from the bony areas, and bandages may help to minimize the chance of bedsore and allowing a progressing bedsore to heal.

The picture below shows an example of a bandaging method with a homemade donut shape, soft texture ring. The ring/ donut will lift the sore area off ground, relieving the pressure and allowing the wound at the center of the ring to heal.
