Swimmer puppy/kitten syndrome is a condition in which the puppy/ kitten has its limbs splayed to the sides, cannot stand/ walk properly compared to normal development. It could be more noticeable when the pup/kitten reaches the age of a month. While the rest of the pups/ kittens in the litter are running and walking, the affected ones are still struggling to stand/ walk.
It is a multifactorial condition- weakness of muscle, conformational issue or dietary factors have been proposed the reasons for it to occur. Physical examination and radiographs are very important to come to a diagnosis.
There are 3 major primary components of therapy: 1. Good footing (egg carton foam can be one of the choice); 2. Hobbles (special taping method to prevent splayed legs) and 3. Physical therapy with “alley walking”. Dietary/ Nutritional care are equally important as well.
Video below showing a pup with swimmer puppy syndrome (recovering stage) assisted walk with Hobble ( special taping technique).

Boredom can be the major factor of behavioral and obesity issues in pets. One of the best ways to relieve their boredom is by keeping them mentally stimulated and laser light would be a good idea! Your dog/cat instinctively chases laser beams simply because they move!
