We are so excited to be supporting Bunnings this weekend with their launch of their new pet range, and their amazing Stores for Paws initiative.
Come and see us all weekend at Silverdale, Westgate, Constellation Drive (Sunday only) and Manukau (Sunday only) and meet some of our beautiful foster puppies looking for their forever homes 💜.
🐶 Meet the team – find out about Saving Hope, fostering or just how you can help
🐶 Buy a sausage (or 2), and a drink would go well with that.
🐶 Puppy cuddles – great way to get your cuteness fix.
🐶 Free Mutt Butter samples (while stocks last) – your dogs will love you for it.
🐶 Colouring sheets for the kids – feel free to share to us when they’re done.
🐶 Check out Bunnings new pet range in store – it’s simply fabulous.
🐶 Already got a Saving Hope pup - let us know how they're doing. And you'll def need to show us pictures!
We look forward to seeing you there 🐾🐕😊💜

Much of the public believes that working in veterinary medicine must be a boundless parade of joy-inducing experiences. Not true.

Force-free trainers oppose aversive training tools like slip leads, shock collars and prong collars. While some claim these tools "work" when used correctly, the reality is they don't truly train the dog. They just punish the dog for unwanted behaviour, they don't teach the dog what to do instead.

Positive reinforcement works by rewarding the dog for the right behaviour, creating a lasting positive association between the action and the consequence of that action. Over time, rewards are given less frequently, but the behaviour remains because the dog has learned what’s expected.

In contrast, prong collars, for example, create discomfort by pressing sharp prongs into the dog’s skin, which is far more sensitive than a human's skin. Some argue that a dog’s neck is strong enough to handle it, but this is incorrect and dangerous. The neck houses vital structures like the windpipe, oesophagus, lymph nodes and major blood vessels, all vulnerable to serious injury from such tools.

These collars might temporarily stop pulling, but no real training occurs. Once the prong collar is removed, the dog usually resumes pulling. These tools merely suppress behaviour without teaching the dog what to do instead. Pulling often happens because dogs haven’t been properly trained to walk on a lead and because they naturally move faster than humans.

The best approach is to reward the dog for walking correctly. This method, though slightly slower, builds trust and strengthens the bond between dog and owner. Positive reinforcement and force-free methods are more effective in the long run and dogs actually enjoy being trained.

If you use aversive tools, consider seeking a force-free trainer. They can guide you in teaching your dog to walk nicely without causing discomfort, pain or fear. Tools like harnesses with two points of attachment can help steer and manage your dog while training. In short, train with your brain, don't inflict pain!
