Help save a life, so many needing help
We are so excited to be supporting Bunnings this weekend with their launch of their new pet range, and their amazing Stores for Paws initiative.
Come and see us all weekend at Silverdale, Westgate, Constellation Drive (Sunday only) and Manukau (Sunday only) and meet some of our beautiful foster puppies looking for their forever homes 💜.
🐶 Meet the team – find out about Saving Hope, fostering or just how you can help
🐶 Buy a sausage (or 2), and a drink would go well with that.
🐶 Puppy cuddles – great way to get your cuteness fix.
🐶 Free Mutt Butter samples (while stocks last) – your dogs will love you for it.
🐶 Colouring sheets for the kids – feel free to share to us when they’re done.
🐶 Check out Bunnings new pet range in store – it’s simply fabulous.
🐶 Already got a Saving Hope pup - let us know how they're doing. And you'll def need to show us pictures!
We look forward to seeing you there 🐾🐕😊💜
Much of the public believes that working in veterinary medicine must be a boundless parade of joy-inducing experiences. Not true.
Force-free trainers oppose aversive training tools like slip leads, shock collars and prong collars. While some claim these tools "work" when used correctly, the reality is they don't truly train the dog. They just punish the dog for unwanted behaviour, they don't teach the dog what to do instead.
Positive reinforcement works by rewarding the dog for the right behaviour, creating a lasting positive association between the action and the consequence of that action. Over time, rewards are given less frequently, but the behaviour remains because the dog has learned what’s expected.
In contrast, prong collars, for example, create discomfort by pressing sharp prongs into the dog’s skin, which is far more sensitive than a human's skin. Some argue that a dog’s neck is strong enough to handle it, but this is incorrect and dangerous. The neck houses vital structures like the windpipe, oesophagus, lymph nodes and major blood vessels, all vulnerable to serious injury from such tools.
These collars might temporarily stop pulling, but no real training occurs. Once the prong collar is removed, the dog usually resumes pulling. These tools merely suppress behaviour without teaching the dog what to do instead. Pulling often happens because dogs haven’t been properly trained to walk on a lead and because they naturally move faster than humans.
The best approach is to reward the dog for walking correctly. This method, though slightly slower, builds trust and strengthens the bond between dog and owner. Positive reinforcement and force-free methods are more effective in the long run and dogs actually enjoy being trained.
If you use aversive tools, consider seeking a force-free trainer. They can guide you in teaching your dog to walk nicely without causing discomfort, pain or fear. Tools like harnesses with two points of attachment can help steer and manage your dog while training. In short, train with your brain, don't inflict pain!

Did you know puppies can benefit from obedience training as early as seven weeks old! By six months of age, almost all behaviour problems are already in place. This means that early clicker training can be used to avoid problems before they become more difficult and frustrating. Book a consult now!
Update on Leo and Bear! Leo’s barking has improved when visitors are over and check out this video! Leo and Bear are bonding and playing very nicely! Leo’s so much more comfortable around Bear and they are interacting well! Great job family!
Hi Teddy! We have been working on demand barking, impulse control and jumping! We have added environmental enrichment and will ignore the unwanted behaviours and mark and reward the moments he is quiet and four paws are on the ground. Go Teddy too smart for your own good! 🐕 👏🫶🏻
Why every puppy owner should follow the Fairy Dog Mother’s Preventative care and management programme. A new puppy is an exciting time in a families life. Unfortunately new puppies don’t come with instructions and a large percentage of new owners can feel overwhelmed. The Fairy Dog Mother’s Preventative Care and management program consists of two consults at your home and covers all aspects of puppy management. This program teaches new owners how to communicate with their puppy so they can teach good manners and puppy etiquette from the start. It’s much easier to ignore unwanted behaviours and encourage and shape good behaviours, instead of waiting until there is a problem and trying to correct a bad habit. There is only a small window to achieve this so the younger the puppy the better. Best of all, by developing a common language owners can bond with their puppies and enjoy this roller coaster journey! Set puppies up to succeed by following my top five: 1. Develop social skills through correct socialisation with other dogs, people, places and environments using positive reinforcement. Correct socialisation might surprise you! 2.Develop a common language to build communication and develop good manners through positive reinforcement training and lots of fun games. 3.Crate/toilet training using positive reinforcement and clicker training. 4.Using preventative management to minimise common debilitating conditions such as anxiety, a lack of impulse or self control, noise phobias and separation anxiety. We achieve this by developing coping skills at a young age. 5.Desensitisation to noise, handling, everyday life (ie baths, grooming, collar grabbing, leash clipping and brushing teeth) and sensitive touch. My preventative management package establishes communication and builds confidence to set young puppies up to succeed. These puppies will grow into well mannered dogs and become fun fur friends for years to come. The program included 2 consult
