HANDSOME HOUNDS dog training and grooming – Look Good, Feel Good, Behave Well
It’s this time of year we would rather hunker down warm and cozy rather than be out and about with our dogs. Some dogs enjoy the couch, others enjoy this time of year - artic type and gun dogs for instance. With less activity our dogs can become bored and destroy.
It’s a great time of year to familiarise our dogs with darkness and streetlights. No excuse the hospital and university in Waikato always have lights on during darkness and people activity too.
How about joining an evening class. The world looks different at night under lights – great experience for our dogs. Again, at class we are out and about bonding with our dogs. Practise during the week for the upcoming class – more wintertime actively spent with our dogs.
Set up home inside activities – tunnel (sheet draped over a couple of chairs); poles spaced out down hall; cardboard boxes to climb into; open the toy box. Toys to hide for dogs to find. Toys need not be elaborate – stuffed toys from OpShops, opossum tails, unused paint rollers. Create a simple maze for your dog to find its way through.
All these activities are not only keeping away boredom but strengthening the bond between us. Its time well spent. When we want our dogs to listen to our commands and respond in crucial situations they will.

HANDSOME HOUNDS dog grooming and dog training – Look Good, Feel Good, Behave Well
CRATES, a tool we use to house dogs for convenience, travel, and safety. Why crate train our dogs? Its helpful dogs become familiar with crates so when we as owners, decide to use crates or the situation arises our dogs are expected to be in crates they can cope with the situations.
The home environment is the most suitable venue to crate train our dogs. Its at home that we can best gradually introduce them to being in a crate – a safe place. First as an area to find interesting new toys; to eat meals; be away from rowdy youngsters; to snooze. We can set these crates up in our home, on a porch and in our vehicle. Some pups’ training may start early with their breeders so that once purchased, the pups may travel by road, rail or air in crates to their new homes.
Crates are extremely useful at dog sporting events. Gazebos or tents are erected around the outside of the competition areas, dogs waiting to compete are housed in crates. This setup allows the dogs to be near their owners and within the sporting environment.
Vets use individually enclosed areas, similar to crates, for dogs awaiting medical procedures. Dogs may spend hours before receiving attention. Dog groomers often crate dogs on arrival and while awaiting pickup. Some groomers, after bathing dogs, will use crate dryers.
For travel in our vehicles, metal crates are a safe way to transport our dogs. Should our vehicles be hit by another, chances are our dogs will not be crushed or catapulted around our vehicles. Soft collapsible crates and harness do not provide the same protection.
Collapsible crates are handy to take and set up at the beach. In this situation the crate provides not only a safe place for our dogs but shade too. The door can remain open. For dogs without solid stay commands, adding electric fence standards with leads attached then clipped to the dogs’ collars gives certainty dogs will remain nearby. These crates are ideal if training classes are held in open areas. Dogs can be placed in crates while listening to the instructor; handlers helping adjust or move agility equipment; watching other class members doing scentwork.
Staying overnight with friends or in paid accommodation crating your dog may be a great safety feature while not in a dog proof environment. Often in these situations we can easily become distracted, situations dogs are all too ready to take advantage of.
So, although we may initially decide we have no need of a crate for our new family member it is worth doing the training. Should the situation arise when our dogs will be confined (travel, vets, groomers, sports) being familiar with a crate means they can deal with the situation at hand (paw) and accept the confinement.

HANDSOME HOUNDS dog grooming, dog training – Look Good, Feel Good, Behave Well
Previously I wrote on health testing of pedigree dogs prior to breeding so that pups born were improvements on their parents and ailments each breed was prone to. With pedigrees we know their character traits such as hunting, herding, companions. We know what we’ve got to work with and expect long active lives.
What about mixed breeds, backyard bred, and rescue dogs?
Often, we find delightful characters, lovable dogs, enjoyable to be around. We do have uncertainties though. Without the health testing we take our chances on how well their health will hold up if we wish to use them as active companions, working or sporting dogs. Quite early in their lives, health issues may arise that involve veterinary care – long term medication or operations, restricted movement. An organisation may insist on early neutering or speying prior to growth plates closing which can affect dogs’ health and in some cases behaviour. They may already have been speyed/neutered without growth plates being considered.
What about socialisation? Many have not been socialised in the easy or crucial periods of their lives. Many have been kept confined to backyards, without shelter, much food or water, human or dog contact; separated from their mothers early. Here again we take our chances when they join our families. We may need to be patient with simple activities such as toilet training, living in our homes, meeting other people and animals. The outside world can also be scary. Fear or anxiety of unfamiliar noises such as machinery, vehicles, running water, any manner of everyday noises and activities we take for granted.
Maybe fear of people who resemble those who treated them badly. Most behavioural issues take time and patience and may involve the guidance of a professional dog trainer.
With mixed breed, backyard bred, and rescue dogs we take our chances, learn heaps along the way and need to be prepared to spend money, time, and energy to get results; nurse our dogs during their early days with us; maybe retire from sports early; prior life trauma may mean they are unsuitable for what we intended. Maybe after months, perhaps years of trying, we find our efforts and searching for solutions run out. Euthanizing being the kindest decision.
So, when choosing a dog for what we have planned we also need to decide pedigree or other, know the differences and what we are taking on.

HANDSOME HOUNDS dog grooming and training – Look Good, Feel Good, Behave Well
Earlier in May veterinarian specialists set up stations at the PurinaOne dog events centre, Ardmore, Auckland.
These specialists were there to carry out tests on pedigree dogs. Prior to breeding their dogs, owners were keen to know their dogs were healthy – not pass on hereditary ailments.
Every dog was not tested at each station. Dogs were tested for ailments/defects their particular breed, was prone to. For instance, the brachycephalic dogs such as Boxers and Pugs were there to have their breathing ability rated. Should one of these dogs be given a poor rating a breeder would then decide not to breed from that dog. Same would apply to eye tests. Should a breeder discover their pedigree dog had an eye defect that could be passed on to offspring that dog would be omitted from their breeding programme.
Stations were also set up to do DNA analysis, heart testing, patella testing and semen collection.
Many veterinary clinics will do hip and elbow testing which is then sent to a specialist who will give a rating on the structure of these joints.
This is the health testing responsible breeders do on their dogs prior to breeding. These offspring will be seen in the confirmation show ring but also sold as pet and sporting dogs.
These are the people we should buy from. They are attempting to breed the healthiest animals possible.
When we decide we would like a specific breed of dog and the price may seem high we need to consider the knowledge, time, effort, and money in creating these canines. Balance the price against the number of vet visits required should your pup have defects or ill health. Each vet visit currently costs approximately $100. Over the lifetime of a pet dog that can amount to way more than the initial expense of a health tested pup. Operations will cost considerably more than $100, plus ongoing visits. With accidents we take our chances whereas ill health can be greatly reduced by initially choosing a pup from health tested parents. If we cannot read the health tests shown to us by a breeder, we can ask a vet or a knowledgeable breeder to interpret the findings.
There are also ongoing benefits. Usually, these responsible breeders want all their puppies, no matter their lifestyle, to thrive. They are usually happy for the pup new owners to keep in touch and ask questions. Should they be DogsNZ members they are expected to adhere to the Breeders’ Code of Conduct, to give, at no extra charge, the pedigree papers of each pup. All this information is on their website and is a good guidance from which to ask questions of breeders.
A heathy pedigree pup makes for a great pet, sporting dog and few vet visits - vaccination, speying/neutering, and then annual health checks with support as our dogs live to old age.

HANDSOME HOUNDS dog grooming and training – Look Good, Feel Good, Behave Well
We are approaching 25 April, ANZAC Day and remember those who contributed, supported, fought, died, and sacrificed so much during the two world wars.
It’s also a time to remember the dog. For hundreds of years the dog has been there, giving willingly to humans, their talents, and skills. Their sense of smell, acute hearing, willingness to work and courage are traits many of us value. It was for these abilities that dogs were coopted into human conflicts in a variety of roles.
In World War I they hauled machine guns and supply carts; were messengers navigating a barrage of bullets. They could move swiftly over difficult terrain during the chaos and noise of battles. During the World Wars these messenger dogs had cannisters attached to their collars carrying crucial information or packs carrying much needed supplies. Tracker dogs would detect explosives as well as tracking down soldiers. First aid dogs were trained to go onto the battlefields with first aid kits; stay with the wounded or return with evidence a person was alive. Trenches were plagues with rats. Here small dogs were enlisted to kill these rodents. Others were sentry dogs. They sat alongside a soldier on guard duty. Their great hearing would alert to strangers approaching camps. Their sense of smell too could detect human scent way in the distance. Evidence of the dog’s talent is apparent when it is noted that seven platoons fighting in the Pacific had War Dogs. None of these platoons were ever ambushed by Japanese.
A number of breeds were chosen and trained for these tasks such as German Shepherd Dogs, Dobermanns, Airedales and Rottweilers, Belgian sheep dogs, Eskimo dogs, Siberian Huskies, Malamute, farm collies plus crosses of these breeds too.
And then there were the dogs often abandoned by owners when war suddenly reached their towns; those frightened by the horrific sounds, who went bush. These orphans were later found, attached themselves to soldiers who passed by; airmen who landed unsuspectingly in their areas. The dogs created feelings of home. Some went on to assist with crucial war tasks and gain the Dickins medal (animal Victoria Cross) – Judy and Andis.
Once again in history we see how the dog made a valuable contribution to humans. At this time we say, thank you Dog for your war contribution.

HANDSOME HOUNDS dog training – Look Good, Feel Good, Behave Well
Grab a group of dog-loving friends, head to Raglan. Cross over the one-way vehicle bridge, turn right and head on round to the Kopua Domain carpark.
At low tide, the long stretch of beach with a high bank on one side provides a great safe space, for a group of off-lead dogs. That space is extended as they plunge into water.
While group walking is rewarding for the dogs, we need to watch the interaction of the group should other dogs approach. Be aware that a single dog approaching may be overwhelmed by a group of dogs, interest in it, all at once. Perhaps a few handlers could practice their recall while just one or two dogs at a time meet the newcomer. Alternatively, some could be distracted by a water activity. Keep the group moving along. Be alert too to the newcomer’s manners. Other handlers often are not aware of objectionable dog behaviour. Upsetting one of a group could have a newcomer reprimanded by many group members.
The walk can be as long or short as you want. Turn round, head back. How about lunch? Picnic tables, and a kiosk that serves fast food (tasty fish), all at the Kopua Domain carpark.
There are always opportunities when out and about to introduce new situations to our dogs. How about heading over the foot bridge into town. Dogs on lead, with manners are welcome in town. Here practise walking with many people passing by; crossing narrow roads with traffic; stop off for food. Alternatively, after walking over the bridge, along the track onto town streets, pass a couple of tiny side roads, turn right and seaward past the Police Station and Backpackers accommodation onto the track leading back over the bridge to the carpark. Great little training circuit.
Wanting to spend more time in the township there are eateries and cafes - no franchised fast-food outlets here. Boutique shops - arts works, hand crafted goods, herbs, surf clothing and equipment and much more.
Toilets, children’s play areas as well as Camping ground cabins at the Domain. Maybe a cabin will extend to a weekend stay and many more places to explore with dogs.

HANDSOME HOUNDS dog training – Look Good, Feel Good, Behave Well
The Waipa Esplanade Walkway is a six- kilometre return-journey track beside the Waipa River. This track can be accessed from either The Point, Ngāruawāhia or from the Ngāruawāhia Road end carpark that backs on to Centennial Park.
This track provides a variety of areas – river on one side, open grassed areas, paddocks, and bush on the other side.
The bush provides shade and a great area for our dogs to explore as they sniff along on leash. Take time on this part of the track, your dogs will enjoy it. Out in the open the grass areas allow our dogs to stretch their legs if their recall is solid. Alternatively, the open grass spaces provide ideal opportunities to play games with our dogs, may be practise our recall on a long line; hide behind a tree here and there and have our dogs find us; drop an article or two and send our dogs back to retrieve them. All these types of activities enrich our dogs’ outings, engage their brains, all of which satisfies, and tires them more.
If previously you have practised biking with your dog beside you, most of this track could be used for more training.
Commencing this walk from the Ngāruawāhia Road end you arrive at The Point. The viewing platform at the junction of the Waipa and Waikato Rivers provides an impressive, closeup view and awareness of waterpower with the meeting of these two mighty rivers. There are a few historic structures to see – great opportunity for your dog on lead to practise civilised walking between each site and a SIT or DOWN as you read the information at each one.
Time for a rest – seating can be found nearby at the Reserve as can the toilets.
Take water and snacks for both you and your dog unless you decide on a 10-minute walk into town for refreshments prior to your return journey.
A great little track for enjoyment, exercise, and lots of learning.

HANDSOME HOUNDS dog grooming and training – Look Good, Feel Good, Behave Well
While out and about our dogs may walk beside us well on flat surfaces but hesitate, pull ahead or even trip us up when confronted with a different gradient or surface under their paws – co-ordination.
Uphill or downhill their pace may be out of sync with ours. To rectify this, on a flat surface walk at slow pace (for uphill), then normal pace, now fast pace (for downhill). Once your dog is paying attention and changing pace, walk in a weaving (zig zag) pattern. This pattern while walking up and down hill can automatically slow the dog down.
Bridges encountered on walkways across stream or board walks are usually covered in plastic netting to give us grip but can feel strange to paws causing dogs to hesitate. The bridges usually have side panels too giving an enclosed feeling when approaching. Here we can often distract our dogs with a favourite toy or a treat to keep them moving across this surface. Depending on how your dog reacts turn around and walk over the bridge. Perhaps find some board walk areas that continue longer than a bridge to have your dog feel comfortable walking on that surface.
How about steps and stairs. Our dog’s first encounter may be at home on internal stairs or external steps. The ideal steps to practice are wide steps, steps where a small dog may place all four paws or a larger dog place front paws on step one and back paws securely on step two. These wider steps allow us to go up or down slowly. Should our dog be behind or pull slightly ahead, the handler will not become off balance when correcting the dog.
Often pathways with steps can be narrow so we need our dogs to be steady while we negotiate the steps together and at times pass others too. Teaching controlled negotiating of steps prevents our dogs putting unwanted pressure on their joints especially if steps and stairs are frequently in their everyday lives.
Taking time to introduce techniques to negotiate things our dogs may encounter when out and about builds confidence in them and their trust in us.

Well we have just heard WEST has finished his Hearing Dogs’ training programme and was placed with his person early December 2023 - what a wonderful Christmas gift. Go well WEST.
HANDSOME HOUNDS is now contributing to PURINA’s training, equipment such as jackets, bedding, bowls, leads, collars, halties etc.; food and training treats, veterinary costs as well as the costs associated with placing her with a Deaf person who’s life will be enhanced by Purina’s company.
PURINA was born on 27 February 23. Birthday coming up PURINA. She came from Taranaki. PURINA is fun loving – full of life puppy, she came into the training programme last week and is settling in well we are told. PURINA was named in recognition of all the puppy and dog food donated to Hearing Dogs each year from Purina NZ.

HANDSOME HOUNDS dog training and grooming - Look Good, Feel Good, Behave Well
We love it and so do our pet dogs, when they can join as many of our leisure activities as possible. For this to happen we need to spend time familiarising them with each situation.
For instance, walking casually beside us down busy streets, people/dogs/other animals passing by, rowdy vehicles on the roads, and emergency vehicle sirens sounding. Our leisure activities may also involve boats or boards on the water; trucks; following family sports games; visiting cafes; frequent travel on buses, trains or in planes; staying in accommodation; visiting rest homes, universities, or workplaces; stretching our legs on shared walkways, through bush or on sand. The variety is endless.
In all these environments/locations we want to have our pet dogs comfortable with the situations and follow our instructions. Following instructions is important when an unusual set of circumstances arises too.
How do we start? One of the best ways is to join a Canine Good Citizen class. This four-stage qualification is designed to gradually progress your dog’s confidence to handle most public situations. You learn to give your dog good guidance; know what the law expects of you in the care of your dog and responsibility to the public. With your dog knowledge you may feel you can train your dog to cope. Classes provide a variety of dogs and people, dogs barking, moving at different rates, jumping, lots of distractions while your dog learns to listen to you and carry out your requests. In class you get to practise, make mistakes, learn new methods, break activities into stages, your errors are seen and corrected.
With a busy lifestyle you need to make time to attend classes, to practice at home. Training alone you may let practice slip and the distractions aren’t around on a regular basis.
It takes time and repetition to have your dog public ready. But what a pleasure when your Canine cruises along as a Good Citizen.

HANDSOME HOUNDS dog grooming/training: Look Good, Feel Good, Behave Well
Our dogs can go with us on many outings these days but while we are out and about and may stop off at a dog friendly café, stretching their legs in shady places can be a bit harder to find.
One such area is Jubilee Park/Te Papanui. It’s part of the Claudelands recreational area on Boundary Road in Hamilton. An area rich in ecological and cultural history. Te Papanui was part of the semi-swamp lowland forest that grew in this area. An area with a plentiful supply of birds hunted for food.
Through this small remaining forest area, a boardwalk track, covered in plastic netting, has been erected. Not only a shady area but also a surface that many of our dogs may not have encountered. The boardwalk is narrow, but experience is gained for our dogs as we meet other users walking, in wheelchairs, on bicycles and with their dogs – a truly shared track. Our on-lead dogs can stroll along sniffing in the cool for approximately 10 minutes before coming out onto the wide-open park green. Here, energetic dogs can run together, chase a ball or frisbee. Ideal frisbee chasing area as surface seems flat and free of potholes. Walking around the whole park area may take approximately an hour or more depending on your pace.
Car parking can be found roadside or in the nearby carpark.
Take something substantial to place used poo bag in as rubbish bins seem few and far between. Toilets are located near the children’s playground.
A great in town area for dogs with added experiences.
Great training experience for part of the Canine Good Citizen qualifications too.

HANDSOME HOUNDS dog training – Look Good, Feel Good, Behave Well
Beaches, lakes, and river walks as well as our local walkways were usually the popular leisurely walks with our dogs. Now more dog owners are venturing into bush for hourly walks as well as weekend and holiday hikes. It great to take our dogs into these open areas especially along shaded tracks in summer.
While we know our dogs at most ages can do long walks, should they? We need to consider what their bodies can cope with without causing damage.
Firstly, build up fitness on shorter walks before attempting sleepovers. Remember off leash dogs often cover far more ground than we do from start to finish.
Age – a crucial consideration. For young pups this type of exercise is unsuitable.
Even for young dogs, too much exercise can damage bone, joints, cartilage, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Start with pup exercise guidelines. A good guide is five minutes exercise for every month of your pup’s age. So, for pups two to six months gentle exercise. This is not an age to be jumping down banks or steps, chasing balls or attempting steep inclines. These young pups would be best doing activities such as backing up, walking on low planks of wood, going through a child’s tunnel, placing feet in box. At this age these activities help pups to be aware of what is around them, different surface textures and body co-ordination. A gentle walk using pup time guidelines and lots of swimming would be ideal exercises for this age group.
12 to 18 months lengthen their walks, maybe add in running and keep up with swimming. While building up fitness, exercise at different times of the day. When out on trails some of the walking time may be in hot weather.
While considering our dogs’ health when young and growing, as our dogs age we need again to consider how their bone, joints, cartilage, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are coping with our outdoor ventures. Maybe we then need to return to shorter walks, take three-day weekends to cover the ground we previously covered in two; choose tracks with easier gradients. Adding nutrients to our dogs’ diets on these trips as they age helps too.
Mealtimes are another consideration when exercising. Eating approximately one hour before or one hour after exercise is a good guide to follow.
While we ourselves gauge how much our bodies can cope with, we need to be doing the same for our dogs, consider the dog aging timeframe.
To have our dogs enjoying bush walking as long as possible we need to consider what level of exercise is best for their bodies’ age at each growth stage.
You only get the chance to grow a healthy pup once. A good-structured body comes from excellent breeding as well as upbringing. So, choose carefully, the amount and type of exercise you allow your dog to do as it enters each growth stage.

With this hot weather in the Waikato get brushing those double coated dogs. Its that fluffy undercoat that retains heat. Each guard hair (top coat hair) has a muscle where it joins the skin. When our double coated dogs are hot that muscle arches the hair to help keep our dogs cool. So you getting rid of undercoat will help your dog be more comfortable on hot days.
Keeping our dogs slim also helps them cope better with hot days
