Spilaridge Kennels are located north of Christchurch near Kaiapoi Lakes, just off State Highway 1.

Situated on a 6 acre property, the NZKC registered kennels are run by a family of four who have, over the last four years, totally fallen head over heels for the breed of the African Lion hunter. We aim to breed for excellent health, temperament and confirmation. Our dogs have been hip and elbow scored and have achieved champion titles. About Ridgeback

This handsome dog breed was created in Afric

a to be a versatile hunter and home guardian. He's smart but sometimes stubborn, with a moderate energy level and an easy-care coat. These days, he's less likely to hunt lions and more likely to hunt a soft spot on the sofa after going jogging with you. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is independent and intelligent, a combination that can be entertaining, frustrating, and rewarding, all in one. It's important to begin training early and to be firm — but not harsh — and consistent. Because of his hunting roots, the Rhodesian Ridgeback has a high prey drive. That means stray cats and other small furry animals aren't safe in your yard, and it also means your yard should be securely fenced, to prevent him from going hunting on his own. Exuberant and active in puppyhood, he matures into a quiet dog with moderate exercise needs. The Ridgeback is protective of his home and a discriminating barker who can be counted on to alert you to trouble. He's reserved with strangers but gentle and affectionate with family members. Like every dog, Rhodesian Ridgebacks need early socialization — exposure to many different people, sights, sounds, and experiences — when they're young. Socialization helps ensure that your Ridgeback puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog.

And now introducing Spilaridge Simply The Best "Phoebe" and Spilaridge It Takes Two "Ria" (pedigree names yet to be approved by Dogs New Zealand) who are continuing their journey with us here at Spilaridge. For now at least. We are looking to place an entry in a local breed show once they reach their 3 months. Time and place is yet to be confirmed. It would be wonderful to see some of you out there supporting us and for those of you who took one of their siblings doing a bit of socialisation. We are hoping all your new additions are settling in well.

And it is a wrap up from us at Spilaridge with our Tina Turner litter. Last two pups flew the nest on Friday this week. Our Miss Yellow now Sunny (Spilaridge You're My Sunshine) and Kingston (Spilaridge Golden Eye). Two liver nose girls are staying with us here for a wee bit to see which one of them will be able to keep up with our tempo. Go well little brown babies.

Another round of departures this week. Our beautiful Hugo Jnr (now Moose) eventually found his people and a wonderful home with another Ridgeback girl and Mr Red (quite possibly Hugo now) left with his mum today. A tad quieter in the puppy room now. Go well my babies.

6 weeks yesterday and all pups now have their new furever loving homes lined up apart from our little Hugo Jnr (Spilaridge I Idolize You - subject to Dogs NZ approval). Ready for pick up the week commencing 12th August. He is a beautiful, correct, show quality liver nose boy who loooves his cuddles. 💕🐾

Puppies are three weeks and have discovered their feet and toys, their milk teeth have broken through the gum and they have had a taste of their first meal. All doing well and meeting their milestones.

The box is bursting at its seams now at whelping box blanket change. Puppies are piling the weight on just nicely. We still have two liver nose boys available. Introducing our Tina Turner litter born on Monday 17th June. Mum Layla blessed us with an easy daytime labour delivering 8 live puppies, 4 girls (2 livers) & 4 boys (2 livers). No DS detected at this point, all pups are to the breed standard apart from one girl who grew only half her ridge. No kinks or excessive white. Dad Enzi is already in the puppy room watching from the couch ready to roll up his sleeves and help mum with cleaning up.

🐾💕 It is with a tentative excitement we announce a successful mating between Layla (NZ CH Spilaridge Midnight Girl) and our Ozzie boy Enzi (NZ CH Macumazahn Back to Black). Puppies are due mid June. Well here we are. Most of our pups from Dick Francis litter have been with their new families for almost 2/3 weeks. All of you reported our fur babies settling into their new lives beautifully which is wonderful to hear. One that brings the most joy is Miss Red aka Georgie (Spilaridge In The Frame) who we thought was never going to pull through her stint at pneumonia at 2.5 weeks. Here she is weighing in at 9kg and enjoying life with her uncle Charlie who comes from our very first litter. Charlie (Spilaridge Tough Emerald). 🐾❤️🐾

Another emotional day for everyone here yesterday. Our last baby from Dick Francis litter heads to her new forever home. Go well beautiful girl! We shall see you in the show ring and hopefully returning back to your original home in a couple of years for a litter of babies to continue your legacy and our lines. Our journey with Dick Francis litter is nearing the end unfortunately. We've had 6 puppies fly the nest over the last three days. 😭 Go well Georgie (Miss Red), Silas (Mr Grey), Thandie (Miss Yellow), Winter (Mr Dark Blue), Frank (Mr Light Blue) and now Marley (Miss Pink). May you have long happy & healthy lives with your new families. We look forward to the updates on how you have settled into your new homes.
